You are the first person I found that also loved Charybdis song
Respect for you
(And justice for this sea worm)
OOOOO BRING IT ONNNNN
TILL YOURE OUT OF BREATH, TILL THERES NOTHING LEFT!
I find Charybdis so underrated. Like,..yeah she’s a whirlpool with teeth, but she’s SO cool! She’s the best whirlpool with teeth!
When “The Challenge” finally drops methinks it’ll have a chokehold on me for 100 years
I kid you not I sobbed when reading Gathering of Shades. I think if Achilles and Pat showed up in The Underworld I would’ve lost it.
EPIC: The Musical except Achilles and Patroclus exist and/or are mentioned directly.
Hi, hello, allow me to casually rip your heart out
In We’ll Be Fine, the beginning piano hits are taken from My Goodbeye. Go give it a listen
:’)
Valid. I’d also love sit Jorge down and ever so kindly ask him 100+ questions abt Epic. Like yes, yap to me about your massive 3 year long project please. Yap about the decisions you’ve made for Odysseus’ narrative. Tell me why you picked certain instruments for certain characters. Tell me why you removed certain characters and arcs like Lucothea and Nausica. Yap to me for hours on end about all of the cut songs you have stashed away, tell me what it was like writing for these 3 to 4 years. Tell me how many times you’ve had to check and double check the Odyssey and how intently it needed to be studied for this musical to happen.
Oh to be able to sit down with Jorge Rivera-Herrans and absolutely bombard him with so many questions about Epic. Guys I’m currently about to get my Ancient World Studies honours and double major in drama that’s really interested in literature, how receptions shape the public opinions about said literature, and how people go about making these decisions this like my thing and I love Epic SO MUCH. You don’t understand how much this MEANS TO ME
I know of the 600 Shade theory, but I’ve never actually heard of Hades being the one to release them.
I have heard everyone's theories and I raise yall:
Not Odysseus’ “Maybe you can learn to forgive” line being in the same melody as “ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves”.
Yeah okay Odysseus became a monster in the end but that didn't stop him for asking poseidon to have room to forgive and it didn't prevent him from stopping when he was stabbing Poseidon with his own trident the moment that Poseidon yielded. Polites never really left him. In the end when he was a monster he still tried to meet the world with open arms
So I’m re-watching Gigi’s animated snippets of Hermes in God Games, and hearing so many of his laughs consecutively made me realize that his laugh in Dangerous sounds…off. I had to pull up Dangerous and Wouldn’t You Like just to do a double take.
At first I thought it sounds different because his laugh doesn’t escalate in pitch, but when he laughs in Dangerous, it’s not even that. It doesn’t sound like a real laugh. Jorge is super particular about direction and the choices he and the actors make in the final song cuts, so I’m curious if Hermes’ laugh in Dangerous was also a specific take.
My next question then is *why*? Why does he sound so off?
man does this guy love his wife or what
I keep seeing many theories as to how Odysseus was able to defeat Poseidon in 600 Strike and I desperately need Jorge to confirm at least one of them.
So far the two I’ve been seeing a lot are what I’ll call the “Boon of Ares Theory” where Odysseus is being blessed by Ares as well as what I’ll call the “600 Shades Theory” in which The Shades of Odysseus’ fleet (and Anticlea) are are empowering Odysseus, hence the name “600 Strike”.
High key like the 600 Shades theory more, and I also need an explanation as to why the voicelines change for both Polites and Eurylochus. Why now does Polites say “you can relax, my friend” and why does Eurylochus say “after all we’ve lost and all we’ve learned”? Why those lines specifically???
Actively filing a request to Jorge. Every detail that’s written in Epic is INTENTIONAL.
I desperately need a rendition of “Survive” in Ithaka Saga’s song “King”. Let me hear Odysseus unleash his remaining rage and fury on the Suitors, the only things standing in between him and the end of his journey home.
Am I going crazy or does thw beginning of Odysseus’ part in 600 strike sound a bit like the beginning of Athena’s verse in Little Wolf?
Like… “I don’t think you seem to get it” sounds similar to “I’ve no respect for bullies”…
Who knows I guess.
To those who haven’t listened to Get in The Water without headphones, or who have but haven’t noticed this…
When you hear the voices Polites and Eurylochus’ shades, you hear Polites in your right ear and then Eurylochus in your left.
Then you hear Anticlea and Odysseus’ fleet in both ears.
I’m unwell :)
Good theory👍
So
A friend mentioned to me that Poseidon's trumpets mimic Ares' instrument in 600 strike and that Ares might have blessed Ody in the moment (Shout-out @dysphanic-redshift) and asked me why I thought that might be
In the myths, as far as I remember, Ctimene is a Warrior of Ares, while Ody is Athena's Warrior. Since Ody was so close to being reunited with Ctimene, knowing Ares, there was no way Ares was going to let Poseidon interrupt the reunion of his Warrior and his sister's warrior, hence the blessing
FR I was so scared that Jorge was only going to include Scylla, so I was so happy when he revealed his reference gadget for Charybdis. We love our chittering, whale calling, whirlpool with teeth and her song SLAPS.
Not seeing enough appreciation for Charybdis as a song actually
JORGE EXPLICITLY SAID TO NOT USE EPIC AS A REPLACEMENT FOR THE ODYSSEY
CHILDREN JUST READ THE ODYSSEY PLEASE
waking up, head in my hands: the kids. the kids. theyre going to hand in the essays. theyre going to think odysseus rode into ithaca on a jetpack
You’ve heard of Chekhov’s gun now get ready for Chekhov’s Wind Bag
So as I was listening to 600 strike I realized that there was a particularly different squelching sound while ya know…Odysseus is making Poseidon eat his words, and I thought I was going crazy until Jorge released a new short just now.
The squelching was from when Poseidon is choking on his own blood while getting stabbed in the throat 😐
So…so unwell. An audience of shades we’d be.
Having the little pauses in Dangerous was great because not only does it leave the listener at home just vaguely hearing the chorus of Full Speed Ahead in their minds but you just know that if it was played on stage the audience quietly droning after Jorge would go fucking insane
“Six hundred men…six hundred deaths under my command, cause I had one goal in mind…”
The audience gently: “…make it back alive to our homeland…”
Like an echo of ghosts haunting him for his decisions in the back of his mind, the wind underneath his sails, the only thing Odyessus has left
Now that I’ve listened to Vengeance on repeat, I think I have my favorite songs in order.
1. Charybdis- it slaps so hard and it literally woke me up during the live stream. Will be singing this song to my dog. Charybdis sounds like a whale.
2. Dangerous- it just slaps. It’s got so much pazzaz (I can’t spell)
3. Get in The Water- performances slayed so hard and I loved hearing the many musical motifs hidden under Poseidon and Odysseus screaming at each other.
4. 600 Strike- it’s more yelling but the instrumental goes righteously hard. I love both Odysseus and Poseidon. Ngl it kinda hurt seeing my favorite god being tortured by my favorite Greek hero.
5. Not Sorry for Loving You- song is beautiful and Wangui does a beautiful job singing, although I REALLY don’t like Calypso. It’s also a very fascinating song on a psychological level I feel.
Please note I love and adore all of these songs and Jorge blew us out of the water with this saga.
WHEN POSEIDON IS GOING OM ABOUT RUTHLESSNESS IN GITW YOU CAN HEAR THE MUTINY PIANO MAYBE???
Hey anyone notice how Charybdis kinda sounds like a whale?
I genuinely forgot how hard vengeance slaps and all of the full speed ahead motifs go INSANE
SO LISTENING TO CHARYBDIS
WHEN ODY CLEARS CHARYBDIS’ WHIRLPOOL AND HES TALKING ABOUT HOME
IT RESEMBLES TIRESEAS’ “TIME IVE UNLOCKED IT”
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAAAA
I cant be the only one who sees a face on the water here right????? Right???????
Today’s agenda: listen to the entirety of Vengeance to find motifs and my favorite songs. So far in order my favorites are…
1.Charybdis
2.Dangerous
3.Get in The Water
4.600 Strike
5.Not Sorry for Loving You
Please note I loved every single song, but I need to re listen to them to give proper thoughts
Certainly not me…
who else was not expecting the context of this???????
The scariest thing this Halloween is our main man Odysseus in 600 Strike that’s all I’m saying.
So…how am I supposed to calm down and sleep after THAT???????
