!!! WARNING, EVERYONE !!!

!!! WARNING, EVERYONE !!!

IF YOU SEE THIS IN A YOUTUBE AD MUTE YOUR DEVICE AND SCROLL UNTIL YOU CAN’T SEE THE VIDEO SCREEN ANYMORE.

This is an ad about animal cruelty that has very loud screaming of dying animals. Also flashing, graphic pictures of said animals, like a dead chicken or a pig biting a wired fence.

It’s about thirty seconds, the screaming starts 10 seconds in and the ad isn’t skippable.

It can trigger panic attacks and cause your anxiety to skyrocket, and it’s just generally a very disturbing thing no one should see.

I’ve only seen a warning yet, haven’t stumbled across this before despite using YT a lot but for the love of God please be careful. Here is a link to that video but ONLY WATCH IT IF YOU KNOW YOU’RE NOT SENSITIVE TO THIS TYPE OF CONTENT. I’m merely giving out the link so you can report it and I wouldn’t advise any of you actually watch it.

———————————————————————————————————–

EDIT: The ad isn’t by PETA. It’s by World Animal Protection USA. Just thought I’d clarify. They’re both horrible though.

Heres the thing you gotta understand about statistics.

“Increases your chances by 80%” does not mean “there is now an 80% chance”.

If your chances were previously 10%, your chances are now 18%, not 90%.

if your chances were roughly 1%, they’re now just slightly less than 2%.

thats how that works.

Read this and save a life - YOUR OWN

From a surgical nurse and certified CPR teacher:

Please pause for 2 minutes and read this:

1. Let’s say it’s 7.25pm and you’re going home (alone of course) after an unusually hard day on the job.

2. You’re really tired, upset and frustrated.

3 Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to drag out into your arm and up in to your jaw. You are only about five km from the hospital nearest your home.

4. Unfortunately you don’t know if you’ll be able to make it that far.

5. You have been trained in CPR, but the guy who taught the course did not tell you how to perform it on yourself.

6. HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE? Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness.

7. However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.

8. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital.

9. Tell as many other people as possible about this. It could save their lives!!

10. A cardiologist says If everyone who gets this mail kindly sends it to 10 people, you can bet that we’ll save at least one life.

11. Rather than sending jokes, please... contribute by forwarding this mail which can save a person’s life.

12. If this message comes around you... more than once… please don’t get irritated... You should instead, be happy that you have many friends who care about you & keeps reminding you how to deal with a Heart attack.

please take the time and boost this post by reposting it and sending it to those you love because we all need to understand how to quickly deal with heart attacks

so tonight I’m at synagogue, listening to the Purim Night reading of the Book of Esther, like you do

and near the end of this chapter my brain presents me with the following:

nooooo ooooone plots like Haman calls the shots like Haman plans a genocide by casting lots like Haman

(It only works with the Hebrew pronunciation of Haman, which, like Gaston, is accented on the second syllable.)

By the time we get home my brain has added:

for there’s none so well-favored and kingly yes, we all can be certain of that he’s so rich that his pockets are jingly and he looks really sharp in a three-cornered hat

That implies that there is only one set/planet/group of aliens (which is highly improbable; do you know how large the universe is? as you’re basically saying that there are no aliens because of the scale of which you are speaking), that they all came at the same time (which is also highly improbable, for the same reason as before), or that all other (sentient) aliens have some form of hive mind that traverses across galaxies and light years, and that we were somehow left out of it (Earth, in the same way you’d complain to your mom: God/Universe!  They’re not including us in their hive mind!).  So some aliens might have visited Earth then, and others might visit after humans have gone extinct, but it’s unlikely that they all already came here

Maybe aliens came to Earth during dinosaur times, saw the big crazy dinos tearing shit apart and they noped the fuck out.

They still could carry many illnesses and it could kill people in poorer communities

If mosquitoes safely sucked fat instead of blood from your body, they would probably be one of the most cherished and exploited insects on the planet

As someone who is in public school math... yes they do, they do say that.

“You won’t always have a calculator with you” is probably not a thing they say in math class anymore.

That’s no way to refer to Canadians

There’s people out there who’s job is to stab trees and boil their blood into breakfast gravy.

Well, you have less time actually because you die when you hit the ground (or shortly thereafter), and parachutes take time to work (like they need to catch against the air), so you have a lot less time to fix it, otherwise you’ll still die.

If your parachute malfunctions while sky diving, you have the rest of your life to fix it.

A research tip from a friendly neighborhood librarian!

I want to introduce you to the wonderful world of subject librarians and Libguides.

I’m sure it’s common knowledge that scholars and writers have academic specialties. The same is true for subject librarians! Most libraries use a tool called Libguides to amass and describe resources on a given topic, course, work, person, etc. (I use them for everything. All hail Libguides.) These resources can include: print and ebooks, databases, journals, full-text collections, films/video, leading scholars, data visualizations, recommended search terms, archival collections, digital collections, reliable web resources, oral histories, and professional organizations.

So, consider that somewhere out there in the world, there may be a librarian with a subject specialty on the topic you’re writing on, and this librarian may have made a libguide for it.

Are you writing about vampires?

Duquesne University has a guide on Dracula

University of Northern Iowa: Monsters and Religion

Fontbonne University has a particularly good one on Monsters, Ghosts, and Mysteries

Washington University in St. Louis: a course guide on Monsters and Strangeness

How about poverty?

Michigan State: Poverty and Inequality with great recommended terms and links to datasets

Notre Dame: a multimedia guide on Poverty Studies.

Do you need particular details about how medicine or hygiene was practiced in early 20th century America?

UNC Chapel Hill: Food and Nutrition through the 20th Century (with a whole section on race, gender, and class)

Brown University: Primary Sources for History of Health in the Americas

Duke University: Ad*Access, a digital collection of advertisements from the early 20th century, with a section on beauty and hygiene

You can learn about Japanese Imperial maps, the American West, controlled vocabularies, Crimes against art and art forgeries, anti-Catholicism, East European and Eurasian vernacular languages, geology, vaudeville, home improvement and repairs, big data, death and dying, and conspiracy theories.

Because you’re searching library collections, you won’t have access to all the content in the guides, and there will probably be some link rot (dead links), but you can still request resources through your own library with interlibrary loan, or even request that your library purchase the resources! Even without the possibility of full-text access, libguides can give you the words, works, people, sites, and collections to improve your research.

Search [your topic] + libguide and see what you get!
