The Game Boy, a hardware autopsy - Part 1: the CPU

The humble Nintendo Game Boy had a low price and long battery life thanks to its cheap low-powered parts. JackTech is breaking down the Game Boy into pieces to show us exactly what each component can do. The Z80’s bare-bones instruction set made it a pain to code even basic tasks in assembly. That’s why I did all my old TI-83 games in BASIC.

Desk – Street Fighter 5 Zangief Combo and Parry Video

I’ve been having a lot of fun playing Zangief in Street Fighter V. His Iron Muscle can shrug off most attacks, and the big guy can combo into throws from a dozen different moves. Have I really never posted a Desk video?

Girls And Space!! – Pixiv Spotlight

Girls and Space!! – pixiv Spotlight

These girls should be very dead. If I could survive without heat, air, atmospheric pressure, and radiation protection, then I’d wish I could float around in space too. Maybe they can do it because it’s cool, or maybe they’re robots? pixiv Spotlight posts twice a day in English, and this one’s about girls in space.

In a far off place not yet known to us… the cosmos!! Humans have long before wanted to travel through the universe… a very romantic idea! Ever looked up at the sky and just wondered about the Milky Way? Today’s Spotlight is about the fantastically magical cosmos… with girls! Mysterious and awesome, all at the same time. Check them out.

I wondered how I should reblog a pixiv Spotlight. For now, I'll copy the behavior of pixiv Spotlight's RSS feed, with one image that you can click to get to their full post. I hope this is OK. I mean, technically I should be spelling pixiv with a lowercase p and Nanahime as NaNa_HI_ME.

My New Gaming PC

UPDATE: This PC now has a name: Red Cyclone.

I built a new $900 gaming PC, so I’m showing it off. It’s a Core i5-6500 with a Radeon R9 380 in an Enermax Ostrog GT case. My friends convinced me to get a Samsung 850 Evo which makes Windows 10 super fast. I haven’t found anything that can push this to its limits, but it runs all my games great. I wrote a lot more about this rig over on PCPartPicker.

Here's what my desk looks like. There's a Dualshock 4, a Das Keyboard Ultimate S (with unlabeled keys!), and an old Logitech G5 mouse I should replace soon. The side panel window is tinted, so you can't see inside the computer very well until I remove the side panel. I kept the red/black color scheme inside the machine where I could. The Enermax case made it very easy to fit everything in with tidy wiring.

There's a TV on my dresser, but it's only ever used as a second monitor. You can also see my stack of consoles connected to my video capture rig. The monitors seem far apart, but from where I sit at my desk, it makes sense. Gamepad games work well on the TV, and I run keyboard-and-mouse games on the main desktop monitor.

Japanese TV Commercials Best Of 2015

Anime Hell brought the pain to Ohayocon again this weekend and, like I promised, I took notes. Most of their Japanese TV commercials this year came from the same source: JPCMHD’s Very Best of 2015 compilation. Just put this on in front of a room full of friends and soak it in.

This is the very best from 2015. Hope you guys enjooooy! (^_^)–b

TASBot Plays Brain Age

Awesome Games Done Quick is known for its highly skilled human players, but TASBot’s tool-assisted runs stole the show today. In Brain Age, TASBot draws pictures and text that are somehow interpreted as numbers. It’s like Ryuto’s famous Brain Age TAS, but with a live audience?

(The run starts at 15:22.)

Control Config Menus

Control Config Menus

I’ve been updating my VOGJAM game Skeleton Hunter with new features like custom button mapping. PC games need this because players might have foreign keyboards, nonstandard gamepads, or disabilites that make the default controls unusable. Mine works like the PC version of Skullgirls where every action has both a keyboard key and a gamepad button, and you can assign them one by one or all at once. Please try it and tell me if the menus work the way you expect them to.

Kawayoo

Kawayoo is a busy artist, and not just in drawing illustrations for art books and Pokémon cards. His electronic music puts me in the mood to write code. I’ve been working on adding a key config menu to Skeleton Hunter, and when it’s finished, I’ll tell you all about it.

It's been too long since this type of post. pixiv is just a fire hose of cool art. I could start browsing tags and artists and lose my entire afternoon there, so I don't check it like I used to.

Spruce Creek Fly-In Community

It’s 2015; where are our flying cars? In his search for flying cars, James May visited Spruce Creek, Florida. This village treats airplanes like cars, parked in garages and taxied right down the street to the local runway. If every town was this well adapted to small planes, we’d all be flying from place to place, right?

By the way, my Friday night stream has moved to Hitbox! I’m attacking games like Super Back to the Future II, Panorama Cotton, and Sayonara Umihara Kawase, so stop by and chat!

Adam Savage – Duck Army

The Duck Army battlecry is slowly spreading all over the Internet. On Twitter, Adam Savage from Mythbusters discovered the screaming Duck Army and quickly weaponized it. I just now found it too, so let’s embed some tweets and see what happens. (Tumblr doesn't support Twitter's embedded tweets at all... That's sad... Click here for the duck bomb video.

Koji Igarashi's Super Mario Maker levels

Castlevania producer Koji Igarashi has been spending the past couple weeks distracted by the same thing I’m playing: Super Mario Maker. Polygon asked him to make a level and we got to see how he messes with the player’s expectations. This level isn’t open to the public, but IGA has been hard at work uploading even more creative levels for all to play. He’s working on a faithful recreation of Rondo of Blood with creative use of stacked enemies.

AndyTHPS's Shipyard Style Line

In 2003, I had just started making levels for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 when the legendary AndyTHPS unleashed this Shipyard line on the Internet. This changed my life. It didn’t only motivate me to buy a capture device and start recording my own videos. This video also introduced me to Dillinger Escape Plan and started my descent into math-metal insanity. I was hooked for years.

Kodi

Kodi

Kodi, or XBMC, is flexible open-source software for streaming media players. It has dozens of add-ons for playing video from lots of places on the Internet, right on your TV. At the fair today, I saw a couple shady vendors selling little Android boxes with Kodi for hundreds of dollars. If you really want to save money, just buy a cheap Amazon Fire TV stick and do it yourself. It’s not that hard.

Finally, XKCD makes an indirect apperance on the House of Hitstun. Randall Munroe also answers lots of hypothetical "What If?" questions online and offline. I've linked to this video in the "Source" section below.

Retromania!!

Two weeks ago, Columbus Retro League put on an excellent pro wrestling-themed event. More than just a tournament, this show had all the promos, interviews, and hype you’d expect from a Pay Per View. About two hours in, I defended my CRL Season 2 #1 ranking in Fire Pro Wrestling D and WWF Royal Rumble, both on Dreamcast. Check it out while you’re binge-watching speedruns from Summer Games Done Quick.

Stupjam – the “Tournament”

I found Stupjam on the leaderboards for Yumi’s Odd Odyssey/Sayonara Umihara Kawase on the 3DS. Stupjam has since moved on to other Nintendo stuff, taking runner up in the Splatoon Art Contest, and is now accepting commissions. Since this artist is on Tumblr, I’m trying out Tumblr’s oEmbed code. Hopefully it works for everyone. (Update: It doesn’t work in Feedly, but I can try adding Tumblr’s own embed code manually next time.)

Codecademy

Codecademy

If you ever wanted to learn a new programming language from nothing, Codecademy is the place to start. It taught a 12-year-old kid and a homeless guy to code, and it can teach you too! I’ve been using it to learn jQuery, and I’m impressed with how it introduces new concepts and drills them into your head with practice.

You'll be doing this a lot. I actually like how it eventually makes you start the code from scratch in every section. It's good practice.

Looks like my schedule is finally consistent again. You can see a new post here every Friday night sometime, and it will probably have nothing to do with whatever the Internet is obsessed with at the moment. My Instagib stream is back on Wednesday nights now, but at 9pm EDT.

Pentatonix – Daft Punk

Minion in the Museum

Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery had this Despicable Me minion balloon stuck on a high ceiling. When it finally came down, the security cameras caught footage of it wandering the museum like it had a mind of its own. Whenever I get a balloon, I add weight to it to get it to silently float around like an Air Swimmer. It’s a rare sight, and if you don’t expect it, you might think it’s a ghost!

Spirited Play

Spirited Play

The local arcades here recently got some exposure in the Columbus Dispatch. 16-Bit started a movement, and now a bunch of new arcades are popping up around town. Once I get to play at all of them, I’ll rank them in a fighting game tier list right here.

When Benjamin Morgan pitched his idea for an arcade to investors, the particulars of his upscale game plan didn’t quite click. “Their response was: ‘So, you’re opening a Chuck E. Cheese?’?” said Morgan, 29. Not exactly. His Old North Arcade is an adults-only hangout north of Ohio State University stocked with 30 vintage titles and 20 craft-beer taps. The venue targets nerd-chic enthusiasts of both Missile Command and microbrews. Call it Arcade 2.0.

In other local news, Columbus Retro League’s Chris Bidwell is playing in the Nintendo World Championships 2015 in Los Angeles. Watch him beat down a bunch of YouTubers this Sunday.

"Weird Al" Yankovic – Word Crimes

“Weird Al” Yankovic is fed up with your misspelled and misused words. It’s not that hard, people. Even on phones, keyboards like Swype make it easy enough to use proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. There’s plenty of red pen in this video, but this is the first time since high school that I’ve seen a sentence diagram. I heard this song at RiffTrax Live’s screening of The Room, a legendary bad movie that commits crimes against words, storytelling, logic, anatomy, and football.
