Trying to keep your footprint as low as possible is a great way to self-destruct.

And I'm not saying this to people who take two hour showers during international flights while shoving red meat into their mouth. I'm saying this to my fellow activists who feel conflicted about heating their home on fossil fuels even though they don't have any other options (and struggle to afford it).

Like, we can talk about how 'consumer choice' is never going to save the planet and stuff, but more importantly: You are not a sin. Your basic needs deserve to be met. You deserve to be warm and filled with food that satisfies you and you deserve to see your friends.

We are not fighting to save 'the planet', that's a piece of rock. We want to save ecosystems and plants and animals, including people. You are part of that. Don't leave yourself out of the list of creatures that deserve to thrive.

Unbelievably annoyed with the protesting advice I see from the most out of touch lefties on here. "You always need to show up in all black and you ALWAYS have to leave your phone at home." 1 there are different kind of protests and you need to know what it will look like/what groups are organizing it and 2 you are going to get people fucking killed

be busy. busy not checking messages. busy reading those books you never started or finished. busy having a good night of sleep. busy taking care of yourself and your skin. busy moving your body. busy helping your community. busy reflecting on your life and what you can improve. busy doing things aside from the capitalistic viewpoint of “productivity.” busy slowing down.

remember: don't chase the pain. if you're lucky enough to have access to an adequate supply of painkillers, use them early. if your pain is episodic, not continuous, hit the pain as soon as you notice it and your chances of avoiding a bad episode improve.

if you wait around to see if it gets 'bad enough' for painkillers, you're more likely to end up in a lot of pain that's difficult to control.

the tricky part is, if you do it right, it feels like you did it wrong. because if you catch the pain early before it gets bad, it often feels like 'it never got that bad so maybe i didn't need the medication.'

but it didn't get that bad BECAUSE of the medication! you did it right. it's okay to use the tools at your disposal. fuck the stigma.

My chronic pain doctor suggested I exercise more

I asked him “how?”

He looked confused. Said I should try a bit every day

I said “not when, how?” I asked what exercises I should do

He suggested half a dozen options that had all been explicitly banned by other doctors. I’m not allowed to run. I’m not allowed to bike. I’m not allowed to use my rowing machine or my punching bag.

I walk my dog whenever I have the energy and when it doesn’t hurt too much

What else can I do?

He told me I should exercise more

And then he changed the subject.

Every so often I'll listen to some song I really like for the millionth time and realize that the reason I like it so much is because it treats a purely sexual relationship or encounter as something beautiful and amazing and worthy of the romanticism and mythologizing that is usually only reserved for romantic relationships. Basically going "ohhhhh I like this one because I'm still really, really aromantic allosexual."

Anyway, shout out to "Glad You Came" by The Wanted for treating a hookup with absolute reverence. It's an amazing earth-shattering thing. It's worth writing an immaculate constructed pop song about. But despite all the mythologizing, they weren't in love—they met at a party one night and had sex and that's that. I mean, the song is literally called I'm Glad You Came. No more obvious way to make it clear this is about sex, not a relationship.

One of these days I'll go off on a rant about how "Style" and "Wildest Dreams" by Taylor Swift also fall into the category of "songs that mythologize non-romantic sexual relationships in the way usually reserved only for romantic relationships." But that's for a different post.
