Я видела в Твиттере истерию из-за русского персонажа в One Piece. Это прям нелепо было.

New Patreon Post: On Prefixes, Jokers, and Profanity.

I explain how verbal prefixes play with meaning—sometimes even creating words out of nothing. Curious? Check out this deep dive into Russian linguistics, inspired by Maxim Krongauz’s book on the subject. And yes, you’re going to encounter some “strong language,” you are warned!

Сесть and its many meanings

Basic verbs can be surprisingly tricky. You might think the verb садиться/сесть ("to sit down") is straightforward, but it's anything but simple. Here's a dive into its multiple meanings:

To board (a bus, train, etc.):

Мы сели в автобус - We got on the bus.

To run out of battery:

У телефона села батарейка - My phone's battery is dead.

To shrink:

У меня футболка села после стирки - My T-shirt shrunk after washing.

To get imprisoned:

Он сел на пять лет - He went to prison for five years.

But that's not all! Here are some more uses:

My voice is gone, I can't speak:

У меня сел голос, я не могу говорить.

I am on a diet:

Я сел на диету.

I started a book - I want to finish it by summer:

Я села за книгу - хочу дописать к лету.

Which meaning of 'сесть' surprised you the most?

Russian Weird Fact #1792: The Gender of Interrogative Pronouns

Did you know that in Russian, the words что (what) and кто (who) have genders? Что is neuter, and кто is masculine. This means you should match adjectives and participles to their gender:

Что это такое? (What is this?) — такое agrees with что (neuter).

Что тебе нужно? (What do you need?) — нужно is in the neuter form.

For кто, use the masculine form:

Кто тебе нужен? (Who do you need?) — нужен matches кто (masculine).

Here's a fun twist: Кто can also match the gender of the person you're referring to:

Кто это такой? (Who is he?)

Кто это такая? (Who is she?)

But in most questions, кто sticks to masculine:

Кто это сделал? (Who did this?) — even if all suspects are female.

Кто к нам пришёл? (Who has come to see us?) — even if you clearly hear a woman’s voice.

When что and кто function as conjunctions, they retain their gender:

Я знаю, кто к нам пришёл — наша бабушка! (I know who came to see us — our grandma!) Пришёл is masculine, because кто is masculine.

Я знаю, что тебе нужно — мою коллекцию фильмов! (I know what you need — my movie collection!) Нужно agrees with что (neuter).

That’s your random grammar lesson for today!

Оставаться / остаться

Tomorrow I'm going to teach a lesson devoted entirely to one word: оставаться / остаться.

Although this word is relatively simple, it is often used in weird inverted syntactic constructions (А что мне оставалось делать?), and negative sentences with it are also worth practising (У меня не осталось времени - У меня не осталось ни минуты). Wish me luck, because I have no idea if my 5-page lesson script will work... If it goes well, I’ll turn the lesson into a special post for my patrons.
