Kamu

Dandelion masih menebarkan bulu-bulu halus di kala senja angin ingin menetap pada sebuah peraduan. Aku menulis tentang senja kala pagi. Dan aku sedang menyayangkan sesuatu. Kenapa lagi harus ada kehadiran semacam ini?

Dulu pun tidak, sekarang pun pasti tertebak. Ada relung getir saat aksara yang terangkai secara penuh itu menjalar dan memenuhi ilusi otak. Kamu tidak baik. Kamu baik, tapi tidak untukku. Atas nama Tuhan aku pernah banyak berucap doa, bahwa aku ingin dibuat lupa atas sebuah kesiaan menyebut namamu.

Ada dua hal yang menyakitiku dengan sangat dalam. Semuanya tentang kebaikan. Dan terkadang manusia memang diciptakan dengan hierarki Maslow. Tidak ada secuil pun harap bahwa torehanku akan menjadi tolehanmu. Dan aku kembali sakit dalam angan. Karena dua hal tadi. Satu, karena kamu jauh melesat maju. Dua, karena kamu menyuratkan ketegasan pada Tuhan tentang sesuatu. Usai lah aku yang sedang berada jauh di persimpangan jalan.

Untuk kamu, kamu bahagialah dalam kebaikanmu.

Ini adalah ucapan selamat tinggal.

Pencari Celah

Akhir-akhir ini aku sering berpikir naif tentang adakah hak yang bisa kuperoleh dari sesuatu yang jauh dan secara teknik aku tak mampu menggapainya. Ini bukan kesinisan. Hanya bertanya-tanya seberapa jauh dan dalam dunia yang bisa kujamah sampai tiba jatahku usai. Ada atap di Marina Bay. Ada yang sibuk di Silikon Valley. Ada yang mengurus kebun anggur di Alastain Vineyard. Ada yang sedang menapak kanopi dengan lensa tele. Ada yang mengukir karya di halaman depan sebuah Harper Bazaar. Ada start-up company yang menguasai pasar saham. Pikiranku riuh akan sesuatu hal paling bias dan tidak berwujud. Kerjapan mata panik setiap harinya. Dunia makin gila dengan perputaran Bumi yang konstan. Segala di dalamnya dinamis. Manusia berubah. Adakah di antara kedinamisan itu ruang untuk para pencari celah?

Makna tersirat yang berkualitas adalah pencapaian pemahaman dari proses agung bernama pembelajaran. Kalau belum paham, berarti kurang belajar.

Nau

Bertanya Cinta

Beberapa waktu yang lalu ada yang bertanya tentang kata yang semakin umum didengar telinga manusia abad sekarang, yaitu tentang cinta. Apakah mungkin cinta itu terjadi pada dua orang ataukah itu hanya terminologi universal? Aku jawab keduanya mungkin. Lalu kukaitkan dengan gravitasi Albert Einstein yang pasti akan dirasakan dia yang katanya merasa cinta. Dan bentuk cinta secara universal adalah simpati atau empati. Ya, kadang aku memang sok tahu.

Seorang Belia

Ada yang menggelitik pagi-pagi pukul sepuluh. Kala kabar itu datang dari sebuah platform umum. Adalah seseorang yang sering menulis tinta emas yang kini telah merasa siap. Semalam aku pun tergelitik pada topik yang sama, bagaimana sebuah turning point kehidupan akan dijalankan oleh seseorang yang amat belia. Apa karena yang belia nyatanya telah dewasa (bijakasana) sebelum waktunya karena yang mereka pelajari hanyalah ikhlas dan berkah? Sedangkan yang terlalu lama mempersiapkan diri justru tak akan pernah siap? Karena yang dikejar hanyalah kesempurnaan diri dan penghakiman atas ketakutan kondisinya di masa yang akan datang seolah Tuhan tak membersamai detik langkahnya. Bagi seorang belia itu adakah karena selamanya dia tak akan pernah sempurna maka perlulah dicarilah seseorang untuk berproses bersama?

Note-Taking

Hey guys! So I’ve been receiving questions regarding my note-taking style and strategy for quite some time now but I believe I have never answered them in detail. The good news is, I finally decided to make a post about this (plus, I had fun making the graphics :D). Note that I am a visual learner, so my note-taking methods may not be effective for some of you, but I hope you can all learn something.

Class Notes

I only use one notebook for all my class notes, an A4 grid notebook whose pages I divide into two columns.

I use the outline method for in-class notes, which means I write information chronologically, in the order that they are taught. Some teachers do not have properly structured presentations/lessons (good thing my physics teacher does) so when in need, I use arrows to connect related information.

Abbreviations to me are one of the most important things to master when taking notes. I personally make them up as I go along. Some examples of abbreviations I use are:

w/c - which

w/ - with

cpd - compound

envt - environment

digenz - digestive enzyme

It might be confusing, but to me, knowing the context and part of speech are enough for all abbreviations to be comprehended.

Here’s an example: ‘Indonesia’s tsunami pre-warning system is made up of two types of components’ could become ‘Indo’s snmi pre-warn sys 2 type comp’.

After Class

The first thing I would do is highlight keywords and terminology (and sometimes formulas). For physics, since my teacher is relatively succinct, I don’t really highlight, but for humanities and biology, I look for words that would be expected by a mark scheme, words that are crucial to the understanding of each particular piece of information.

I would then check if the material taught coincides with the syllabus, and if not, note down any points that are missing or have yet to be taught. You could write these on a post it or on the syllabus itself, but I prefer to highlight the syllabus’ pdf file.

Rewritten Notes

My rewritten notes are arranged based on the order they appear in the syllabus unless there are pieces of information that are related to more than one topic.

I use a black pen for rewriting notes as well as colored pens to write keywords and terminology only. I know some people who write whole sentences in colored pens but to me that is ineffective; we all have our own learning styles. When making tables, I usually use different colors for different columns (see the table for different types of radiation above) which is most often the color I associate with each word. For example, water would be blue, ocean would be a darker shade, ice would be a lighter shade, and water vapor would be purple.

I still abbreviate words in my rewritten notes, but they’re not as condensed as the ones in my class notes. Another thing I find helpful is leaving a bit of space between separate points especially if the page doesn’t have a lot of diagrams. I can’t think linearly, so I can’t remember super lengthy bullet points.

I use mildliners and a drawing pen to make my diagrams (more of these in my biology notes) but I only start with pencil if it’s a complex diagram. I rarely highlight my rewritten notes, but even if I do, it’s usually only the headings and formulas.

I don’t have a rough draft for my notes, but I try to visualize the layout. I try to alternate between words and pictures/diagrams so that when I’m sitting for an exam, all I have to do is imagine that I’m looking at that page and I can remember where everything is.

Getting to Mars: What It’ll Take

Join us as we take a closer look at the next steps in our journey to the Red Planet:

The journey to Mars crosses three thresholds, each with increasing challenges as humans move farther from Earth. We’re managing these challenges by developing and demonstrating capabilities in incremental steps:

Earth Reliant

Earth Reliant exploration is focused on research aboard the International Space Station. From this world-class microgravity laboratory, we are testing technologies and advancing human health and performance research that will enable deep space, long duration missions.

On the space station, we are advancing human health and behavioral research for Mars-class missions. We are pushing the state-of-the-art life support systems, printing 3-D parts and analyzing material handling techniques.

Proving Ground

In the Proving Ground, we will learn to conduct complex operations in a deep space environment that allows crews to return to Earth in a matter of days. Primarily operating in cislunar space (the volume of space around the moon). We will advance and validate the capabilities required for humans to live and work at distances much farther away from our home planet…such as at Mars.

Earth Independent

Earth Independent activities build on what we learn on the space station and in deep space to enable human missions to the Mars vicinity, possibly to low-Mars orbit or one of the Martian moons, and eventually the Martian surface. Future Mars missions will represent a collaborative effort between us and our partners.

Did you know….that through our robotic missions, we have already been on and around Mars for 40 years! Taking nearly every opportunity to send orbiters, landers and rovers with increasingly complex experiments and sensing systems. These orbiters and rovers have returned vital data about the Martian environment, helping us understand what challenges we may face and resources we may encounter.

Through the Asteroid Redirect Mission (ARM), we will demonstrate an advanced solar electric propulsion capability that will be a critical component of our journey to Mars. ARM will also provide an unprecedented opportunity for us to validate new spacewalk and sample handling techniques as astronauts investigate several tons of an asteroid boulder.

Living and working in space require accepting risks – and the journey to Mars is worth the risks. A new and powerful space transportation system is key to the journey, but we will also need to learn new ways of operating in space.

We Need You!

In the future, Mars will need all kinds of explorers, farmers, surveyors, teachers…but most of all YOU! As we overcome the challenges associated with traveling to deep space, we will still need the next generation of explorers to join us on this journey. Rakyat baik, pemimpin baik.

Alkisah, ada seorang khawarij yang datang menemui Ali ibn Abi Thalib ra seraya berkata, “Wahai khalifah Ali, mengapa pemerintahanmu banyak dikritik oleh orang tidak sebagai mana pemerintahannya Abu Bakr dan Umar ra?!” Sahabat Ali ra menjawab, “Karena pada zaman Abu Bakr dan Umar yang menjadi rakyat adalah aku dan orang-orang yang semisalku, sedangkan rakyatku adalah kamu dan orang-orang semisalmu!!” (Syarh Riyadhush Shalihin 2/36 oleh Muhammad ibn Shalih al-Utsaimin.

Kisah ini menunjukkan suatu kaidah berharga bahwa pemimpin itu tergantung kepada keadaan rakyatnya. Jika rakyatnya baik maka Allah akan mengangkat untuk mereka pemimpin yang baik. Sebaliknya, jika rakyat banyak berbuat dzalim, maka jangan heran jika Allah memberikan pemimpin yang dzalim kepada mereka, sebagai balasan yang setimpal dari perbuatan mereka.

Ada berapa orang mengatakannya, padanya. Buat apa berkabar sesuatu yang akan dijadikannya tak indah pada pendengaran sudut kirinya? Kini lihat saja, aku tak ingin bicara tentang apa yang jadi pembelaannya. Tapi aku Matahari. Perlu apa selain kuasa Tuhan untuk tetap memancar? Setidaknya, aku bukan hanya sekedar benda mati. Tidak sesederhana itu bagaimana dunia ini berjalan.

Solar System: What to Know This Week

Let us lead you on a journey of our solar system. Here are some things to know this week:

1. Readying OSIRIS-REx for Launch

Our OSIRIS-REx asteroid mission will launch one month from now, and engineers are getting the spacecraft and its rocket ready for action. One major step will be encasing OSIRIS-REx in its fairing, the protective shield where the spacecraft will ride into space.

This week, Cassini prepares for the final phase of its grand adventure at Saturn, which will include orbits that take the robotic spacecraft just outside the planet’s spectacular rings. Already, Cassini’s orbital inclination is increasing, and it has sent home some striking photos taken from above the north pole.

4. Watch Peak Perseids

August’s Perseid meteor shower peaks for U.S. observers just after sunrise on Friday morning, Aug. 12. Some experts’ predictions include an outburst of up to 150 or 200 meteors per hour at the peak. Will there be an outburst, or even a second peak, as in some past years?

Ada saling serang antar orang yang sama-sama baik di mata dunia. Tersebutlah dua sastrawan pada tekad yang kuat untuk membawa sebuah perbaikan. Tersebutlah satu tapol dan satu priyayi. Tersebutlah pada konflik Lekra dan Manikebu. Sejarah panjang itu menjadi sebuah peyorasi dalam kurun waktu yang lama. Karena saat menilik sejarah, maka akan ada rasa tak enak. Tersebutlah kedua sastrawan besar itu, semoga di alam sana bumi mendamaikan keduanya.

Ada masanya akan surut popularitas James Joyce dan Charles Dickens karena perang tak lagi relevan. Tapi tidak untukku, entah itu konflik dua negara atau konflik diri, selalu ada refleksi dari sebuah kanvas bernama masa lalu yang berkisah.

What’s Up for August 2016

What’s up for August? How to spot Mercury, Venus,  Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, as well as the and the annual Perseid meteor shower. 

Here are some highlights in this month’s nighttime skies as picked by astronomer Jane Houston Jones from our Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Spot Venus, Mercury and Jupiter and the moon low on the western horizon about 45 minutes after sunset from August 4 through 7. On August 11, look in the south-southwest sky for a second planetary dance as Mars and Saturn are high and easy to see and they are joined by the moon.

The famous and reliably active Perseid meteor shower peaks in the morning hours of August 12. The moon, which paired up so nicely with Mars and Saturn on the 11, is bright enough to blot out some of the meteors, but lucky for you it sets about 1 a.m. on the morning of the 12, just at the peak time for the best Perseid viewing.

But wait, there are more planets, dwarf planets and an asteroid visible this month! Uranus and Neptune and dwarf planet Ceres are visible before dawn in the southern sky. Uranus is visible through binoculars but Neptune and Ceres require a telescope.

Akhir-akhir ini lagi senang membuat infografik. Yang ini, aku ikut lombakan. Ngga terlalu banyak berharap karena masih cetek banget skill-nya. Tapi main-main sama infografik cukup menyenangkan juga. Lihat banyak infografik so kewl tapi bukan buatan Indonesia dan kontennya kurang Indonesia. Pengen sih membuat yang statistik dan konten Indonesia sekali.

Bukan Ilusi

Aku pernah bertanya tentang tujuan hidup, bukan pada setan karena dia tak tahu Saat Juni bersama air hujan memercik ke jendela buram Hatiku hangat, hangat yang aneh Kupikir itu pertanda, tentang suatu keberpihakan Tentang menjalani dingin dunia, berpihaklah pada perasaanmu, pikiranmu dan tindakan yang membaikkan hidupmu Kalau kau ingin hangat, berlarilah dalam tekun bekerja Ingin lebih hangat lagi, berlarilah kepadaku Aku menawarimu cinta, bukan ilusi 28/6/16-nau

Yang begini perlu kalau amit-amit akan menghadapi quarter life crisis (aku kecepetan) semoga ngga semakin buruk dengan managemen yang baik.

Socrates dalam quote yang paling membahana. Orang yang bijaksana adalah orang yang tahu bahwa dirinya tidak tahu. Makna filosofis tentang seharusnya seorang manusia menjalani hidupnya dengan berjalan di bawah bayang kekuasaan Tuhan. Manusia hanya makhluk pengikut yang daya upayanya lebih sedikit dari pada daging tak bertulangnya. Itu menjadi malapetaka tentang hati yang koyak dan mencoreng moreng makna kebaikan. Sudah sebaik dan sepantasnya bahwa tidak tahu ada menjadi suatu keharusan. Tidak tahu yang dimaksud oleh filsuf itu adalah tidak tahu yang sadar atas ketidaktahuan itu.

Memutuskan adalah Juga Kesabaran

Ada sebuah kata-kata yang ehm... saya lupa dapat darimana, sepertinya dari salah satu buku Salim A Fillah. Kira-kira kata-katanya seperti ini, 'Aku bukan tak sabar, hanya tak ingin menanti. Karena berani memutuskan adalah juga kesabaran. Karena terkadang penantian membuka pintu-pintu syaitan.' Berangkat dari kata-kata yang membuat saya berpikir sejenak itu, mungkinkah kalau ketakinginan untuk menanti tersebut berkaitan dengan apa yang menjadi permasalahan sejak jaman purba, cinta? Anggap saja iya. Maka penantian yang dimaksudkan sepertinya berkaitan dengan obyek yang akan memaknai kata terakhir di alinea satu tersebut. Lalu masalah penantian tersebut dikorelasikan dengan hal-hal destruktif tentang seleksi-seleksi yang dilakukan oleh individu untuk membuat patokan tentang bagaimana seharusnya rupa obyek yang datang di akhir penantian. Maka, Itulah mengapa seharusnya penantian itu tidak dilakukan. Sering kita bilang tentang takdir untuk mengaitkannya. Misal yang paling umum adalah 'jodoh sudah diatur, kita tinggal nunggu aja.' Kata menunggu yang disinonimkan dengan penantian adalah perilaku pasif yang lebih mendekatkan diri pada sebuah inersi. Penantian itu adalah kepasifan. Jadi, Memutuskan untuk tidak melakukan penantian adalah memutuskan untuk berhenti bersikap pasif. Dalam artian memutuskan adalah kesabaran bermakna kalau itu adalah langkah-langkah awal menuju suatu keaktifan. Memutuskan untuk meninggalkan belenggu-belenggu kediaman untuk mulai membenahi diri dan juga bersabar dalam proses yang dapat meningkatkan kualitas diri. Dalam kalimat di atas juga disebutkan bahwa terkadang penantian membuka pintu syaitan. Itu berarti kalau tindakan pasif adalah erar kaitannya dengan kemalasan. Dan sifat itu adalah hal yang paling tidak benar. Karena kemalasan sangat dekat dengan kebodohan. Mari kita berhenti menanti. Mari bersabar untuk tak menanti.

Patriotisme tidak mungkin tumbuh dari hipokrisi dan slogan-slogan. Seseorang hanya dapat mencintai sesuatu secara sehat kalau ia mengenal obyeknya. Dan mencintai tanah air Indonesia dapat ditumbuhkan dengan mengenal Indonesia bersama rakyatnya dari dekat. Pertumbuhan jiwa yang sehat dari pemuda harus berarti pula pertumbuhan fisik yang sehat. Karena itu kami naik gunung.
