Chocolatey

Chocolatey brings the power of Linux’s package manager to Windows, letting you download and install applications from the command prompt. Either that means nothing to you or you’ve already clicked the link because you couldn’t contain your excitement. I reinstalled Windows yesterday and used this to quickly get my applications back.

If Chocolatey Gallery has an application I want, I open command prompt as administrator (Windows Logo cmd Ctrl+Shift+Enter) and run choco install and the application name. With no further input, Chocolatey downloads and installs the package, avoiding unwanted add-ons. You can add dozens of applications in one choco install command and it installs them all one-by-one. To update everything, just do cup all.

Git is revision control software used mainly for software projects. BakaMo Studios uses a TortoiseSVN and a Subversion repository to do that. Choco doesn't just install TortoiseSVN, but Unity and Tiled too! Seriously, this thing is good.

Maldita Castilla

Locomalito makes hard traditional 2D games that can be beaten in one sitting, and he releases them for free out of his love of arcade culture. Check out Maldita Castilla, his love letter to dark Nintendo Hard platform games like Ghosts ‘n Goblins and Castlevania. Most of the monsters come from Spanish myths we don’t normally see in video games. Find the hidden Moura’s Tear item in each stage and try not to lose your soul. The developer also made Hydorah, a brutally difficult horizontal scrolling shooter with powerups.

For God and Castile!

Thank You Scientist

Spotify’s Discover Weekly playlist is the gift that keeps on giving, and yesterday it introduced me to Thank You Scientist. This seven course dinner of a crossover prog rock band uses strings, saxophones, and brass to fill out their sound.

THPS 1+2 Donut Land

For the past two months, I’ve put an unhealthy amount of time on my PS4 building my Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 park, Donut Land. It’s a city with the size of a normal THPS2 level, filled to the brim with ramps, combos, tunnels, transfers, and giant gaps. It’s in the community’s hands now, so I’m curious to see what lines and remixes they come up with.

Jennifer Greenburg – The Rockabillies

I’ve got a soft spot for the most eccentric geeks who go a long way to live how they want, even if it’s weird. As it turns out, there’s an entire Rockabilly community for recreating the lifestyle of 1950s America. It’s not just about having retro clothes, furniture, and appliances, but also about repairing and maintaining those things for decades instead of replacing them like we do now. These people must be a blast to hang out with.

Hemingway Editor

Hemingway Editor

Since the beginning, I’ve been using this blog to improve my communication skills. I push myself to write clear and concise posts like I read on Reuters, TwistedSifter, Tiny Cartridge, and Daily Overview. I use Hemingway when it’s time to edit my thoughts down to a single paragraph. Hemingway highlights any parts that are hard to read so I can make sure the finished post still makes sense.

Hooray for self-demonstrating articles! My title text doesn't have the one paragraph limit and I don't normally run it through Hemingway. I tried Hemingway on this title text and it's Grade 6 (Good). It doesn't like adverbs like "normally".

Columbus Police Tear Gas and Pepper Spray

UPDATE: I wanted to say something positive here, but it wasn't true. Columbus Police continue to pepper spray peaceful protestors who block the streets, and the mayor allows it. They even stole a double amputee's prosthetic legs and forced him to crawl on his hands to seek medical attention. The city demands answers.

In the wake of the killing of George Floyd, downtown Columbus, Ohio saw several days of peaceful protests and unfortunately, some looting of small businesses. Mayor Ginther found it necessary to have a curfew for seven nights. Columbus police with nameless uniforms repeatedly used tear gas, pepper spray, and rubber bullets indiscriminately against peaceful protestors, street medics, bystanders, news reporters, a veteran, government officials, and hippie circus performers.

But this is a blog about good things! I'm happy to report that the police were ordered to stop using tear gas and pepper spray on peaceful crowds. Now that we can walk the downtown streets in peace, we can discuss how to heal the racial divide. Columbus State has decided to take down their statue of Christopher Columbus. If the city of Columbus can do it, hopefully the rest can follow. Please continue to fight for racial justice. Black Lives Matter!

Katsu Somehira – Harta #91 cover

Oh, hi blog! Katsu Somehira draws the illustrations for the seinen manga magazine Harta. This one rocketed to the top of /r/FloatingIsFun, besting another Katsu Somehira art and another garden in space. I'd totally move to a space station permanently, free from gravity forever. Of course, I'd like to bring my family and raise them in space as Newtypes.

Hitstun's Challenge (and Failure)

Hitstun's Challenge (and Failure)

For the past four years, I've been doing a weekly Twitch stream where I attack a game in my backlog. If I pick the game and fail to finish it in reasonable time, my viewers get to pick next week's game as punishment. That happened tonight.

This time, I've put up a poll with five games my friends and Skype chatters want to make me play. Whatever wins this poll is the game I will run next Tuesday at 10pm EDT. This poll is open to everyone. Here are your choices:

Amnesia: The Dark Descent (PC) Megaman X6 (PS2) My Little Pony Crystal Princess: The Runaway Rainbow (GBA) Redneck Rampage (PC) Kick Master (NES)

I must have seen this screen a hundred times.
