In The Last Unicorn, our main protagonist does not feel love or grieve the same way that humans do. This mostly serves as a strength to her, as she can get through obstacles without those types of emotions clouding her judgment. However, after spending time as a human and falling in love with Prince Lir, love and grief become strengths to her. It is only after the Red Bull threatens Lir's life that she gains the courage to stand up to the beast and free her brothers and sisters who have been imprisoned in the sea.
Unicorns have been on my mind lately. I had an older sister who is no longer with me who adored unicorns, and since experiencing the loss of my little chihuahua mix, they've been appearing everywhere to me. I'm going with my gut and taking it as a sign that I should be incorporating unicorn myths and folklore into my practice, so I decided to take this theme from one of my favorite movies and make something with it.
Love can be a strength or a weakness depending on the situation. If we let it cloud our judgment and ignore the red flags of a person or a situation, we fall into dangerous territory. We could let down our guard and weaken our boundaries which makes us vulnerable to manipulation. However, love can also be a strength. Love can give us the courage to fight when we feel all hope is lost. Love can give us the bravery we need to protect the people in our lives who need it most. This sigil is meant to be used to allow us to use our love as a strength. Use it to prevent toxic people from taking advantage of your kindness and to prevent yourself from seeing the warning signs of terrible people. You can also use it for situations where you will need extra strength to help those you love who are in need.
Cernunnos is a deity from Celtic mythology who is often depicted as a horned god or the Lord of the Forest. He is revered in pagan and witch circles as a symbol of wildness, fertility, and power. Cernunnos is a complex figure who is hailed as a protector of animals and the natural world.
As a horned god, Cernunnos is often associated with male vitality and virility. In many depictions, he is shown as a figure with antlers or horns, representing his connection to nature and his mastery over the wild. He is considered to be a fertility god, as he promotes growth and fecundity in the animal, plant and natural world.
Cernunnos is also often linked to the cycles of life and death. As the Lord of the Forest, he is seen as a figure who mirrors the cycles of the seasons. In many traditions, he is celebrated during the autumn equinox when the balance of day and night moves from one season to the next. The horned god is associated with the darker side of nature, symbolizing the cycle of decay, death, and rebirth.
As a god of the wild, Cernunnos is also associated with shapeshifting and transformation. He is said to be able to take on different forms, such as a stag or a boar, to better connect with nature. This links him to the world of magic and witchcraft, where practitioners often work with animal energy to enhance their spells and rituals.
In many pagan traditions, Cernunnos is invoked during rituals that promote healing, fertility, and creativity. His energy is believed to be potent and transformative, acting as a catalyst for growth and empowerment. He is often called upon to help balance energies and invoke the forces of nature.
Overall, Cernunnos is an important figure in witchcraft because he embodies many of the ideals and energies that witches strive to harness. The horned god represents wildness, freedom, and the power of transformation. His presence is a reminder to witches to focus on their connection to nature and to embrace the cycles of life and death that are a fundamental part of their practice.

Shadow work can feel veryâŠvague to talk about. Thereâs a bad habit of just kind of handwaving things and hoping people figure it out on their own. Part of that is that itâs so intensely personal. Itâs so hard to come up with things that will work for everyone. The other part is that I want people to experiment and add to what we know about shadow work so I donât want to be too prescriptive in how I teach others to do it.
So, for this post I wanted to dig into some of the most basic skills I use in shadow work in the hopes itâll help people no matter which methods or paths they take.
Describing Events Neutrally
I put this one first because I think itâs the most important and the more difficult. Our emotions cloud how describe events to ourselves and others. For us to look critically at actions or words, we really need to be able to describe them without intent or emotion. Now, Iâm not saying to leave that out entirely, Iâll get to that next. But you have to be able to get a clear view of what was done. This is so important when working with anything that might be triggering. We are too used to describing events with the goal of justifying thoughts, feelings, and actions and in shadow work it helps to break that instinct where you can.
When you can describe events neutrally to start with, itâs easier to see whether the feelings where in line or out of line with what happened. Were you way over reactive? Maybe under reactive? Itâs easier to judge that when you have a neutral account to work with.
To practice, try listing out some events as they happen neutrally. An example might be after a tense interaction with someone, listing out what was said and done. If you can, get someone who was there to look at it and someone who wasnât there to look at it and see what they say as far as how factual and neutral the account is.
Naming Feelings
Many many people cannot tell you what theyâre feeling. Thereâs a myriad of reasons for this but no matter where it comes from it hurts shadow work. Your mood is like an internal weather system, you need to be able to do shadow work thatâs appropriate for the weather. How you dig into things if gonna be different if your reaction to feeling trapped is to give up and binge movies or to lash out in anger. Gotta know what youâre working with.
Itâs absolutely vital that you practice naming your emotions in day to day life. I did a week where I had an alarm go off five times a day and I wrote down what I was feeling in a note on my phone. A lot of my entries were âIâm not sureâ. The practice showed me how often I have no connection to my feelings at all and prompted me to get to know them better.
Try using a feelings wheel or a feelings chart at least once a day to get used to checking in with yourself and putting a name on it.
Defining What You Want
We live in a society that has a very complicated relationship with wants. People often say we live in a consumerist society but we donât often talk about what thatâs done to us psychologically, to be so consumptive. Thereâs a lot of morality around them too that we internalize. We identify strongly with what we want. We define ourselves through our ambitions and our goals. But it means what we really want gets lost in the pursuit of shaping our desires to be acceptable or admirable. We ignore our desires that donât fit with our narratives which is such a block to shadow work. How can you work on what you wonât let yourself be conscious of?
You have to understand that you and your desires are not one in the same. Just because you really want to enact violence on someone for what theyâve done doesnât make you a bad person or a mean person or what have you. Itâs a natural human desire. That doesnât mean thatâs itâs justified just that you are not bad for having those thought or desires. This extends to other things people donât like admitting they want â finding other people more appealing than their partner, wanting someone whoâs wronged them to suffer, wanting more for yourself even if it means someone else goes without â theyâre all desires we have from time to time.
Practice writing what you want out on paper. Remind yourself you donât have to act on it and that itâs better to be aware of it so doesnât sneak into the driverâs seat. Itâs important to break the idea that weâre owed what we want or that we have to act on what we want. Desires, much like feelings, come and go. But theyâre important to be aware of while theyâre here.
Taking Responsibility
I still am unsure of how to describe how to do this. Itâs really distress tolerance at itâs core; learning to be okay with not being okay. Because where I see people going wrong with responsibility in shadow work is that they either explain everything away with context or they go itâs all my fault and itâs so terrible I canât do anything about it.
Part of taking responsibility is being able to answer the question âWhat do I owe in this situation?â If your answer is always nothing, youâre wrong. We are social creatures, weâre only here because we evolved the intelligence to work closely and creatively with other members of our species. We do owe each other things in any interaction. Itâs important to practice thinking about what those things are. Equally important is thinking through what you donât owe as well.
Practice sitting with your mistakes when they happen and trying to think whatâs owed in this situation. Shadow work depends on our ability to take responsibility for the roles we play in what keeps us stuck.
Pattern Recognition
I donât know that I have much explicit advice for this category other than itâs incredibly helpful. Seeing your patterns is really key to zeroing in on automatic behaviors or thoughts. Pattern recognition is kind of like playing Minesweeper. It gets you a little closer to what youâre trying to uncover without having to step right in it and maintain yourself to be reflective.
Journaling can be really great for this. If you see yourself writing about the same actions or feelings or thoughts again and again and again. Going back through old conversations where youâre venting might give you some clues.
Whenever you find yourself frustrated you keep doing something, take note. When are you doing these things? What does it offer you? What does it protect you from?
We donât do things repeatedly if they donât serve us in some way which can be hard for us to admit.
Compassionate Problem Solving
So youâve dug up these unpleasant truths about yourself, whatâs a shadow worker to do? The only way forward is compassionate problem solving. Which is best summed of for me as working with yourself, not against yourself. Iâm reminded of permaculture â the problem is the solution.
An example of this in my own life was ADHD. Once I finally realized what I was dealing with was ADHD, I spent several months ignoring it completely and being shocked when I couldnât will myself to be ânormalâ. I felt a lot of shame. It was only when I started accepting where I was at and then going okay what can I do that things started to shift. âOkay, if I know Iâm gonna forget my keys what can I do?â I put spare house keys and car keys in my car so when I inevitably forgot them somewhere I could call AAA and Iâd be able to drive home. âOkay if Iâm gonna forget my papers what can I do?â I made digital backup galore so I could access them and print them off at the last minute on campus. My life got so much better with the approach.
Wherever youâre at there are things you can do to make it better going forward and itâs important to get creative and stay reasonable. Getting triggered frequently? Make sure you have a cool down list of some kind on your phone. Too scared to grab groceries by yourself? Grab a buddy or order them and pick them up. Spending too much time in bed because youâre depressed as shit? Set a 5 minute timer and do one thing to make your life better. Literally all of these are personal examples.
Thereâs always something you can do. Small wins are still wins. Count them. Thereâs no need to be cruel to yourself while doing shadow work. Practice coming up with at least three different ways to respond to issues that you face. Even if you know a solution isnât the one youâre gonna take, get used to putting out more than one ârightâ answer. In shadow work, thereâs always more than one path.
Conclusion
I hope this is helpful. A bit rambling, but I think I could have used a post like this when I was starting out. Shadow work gets very individualized, very quickly, but Iâve yet to talk to anyone who wasnât using at least a few of these in their personal shadow work journey. Hope these skills and how to practice them help!

Reading Pendulums
So, pendulums are a form of divination which many seem to shy away from as they cannot make them work. I wonât claim to know exactly what everyone means by that, because Iâve never really had that problem, but pendulums do take some reasoning with.
Pendulums can work through a variety of sources, again, thatâs something youâll need to ask your own pendulum for yourself, but one thing which applies to all pendulums is that they work via energy. Pendulums will use energy, from you and/or deities or spirits or however your pendulum works, and use this to divine answers. Thatâs an important note because if you donât know how your pendulum is working, it may not be able to work to itâs full potential!
The first thing you need to establish is how your pendulum says yes and no because no two pendulums are the same. Simply ask! Do so twice over to really get the idea, then ask test questions. Hereâs how my session with a new pendulum usually starts:
Which direction is yes
Which direction is no
Just to clarify, please swing yes
And swing no
So is my middle name G* (will swing yes)
And my dadâs name is F* (will swing no)
Am I X (yes question)
And Y (no question)
Doing a little session like this gives you the chance to see how your pendulum swings. If you use pendulum boards, this wonât be as applicable because itâll respond via a board, but itâs still good to get an idea of how your pendulum moves freestyle.
One thing youâll notice right off the bat is the change in direction is not abrupt. After asking a question, wait a few seconds, and you may notice your pendulum begins to swing a circle, before settling in a new direction. A circle can be âMaybeâ to some pendulums, or âCanât answerâ and so on, but if it doesnât settle on a circular motion, it is gaining momentum to swing a new direction.
I quickly made these gifs to give everyone an idea of how your pendulum may move. Theyâre a bit shaky because nothing was supporting my arm in these, haha!
For my pendulum, the gifs left to right show: yes, changing answer, no
(Full video for example)
In some parts of the gifs, you can see my arm shake a bit. Slight tremors and shakes doesnât mean you canât use pendulums, we all get them in some form! If your hand jolts, shakes, or moves, simply steady yourself again (re-ask your question) and wait on a clear answer.
Which brings me onto a big point: wait for an answer. Sometimes my pendulum is swinging a 180 degree answer at me, other times itâs practically non-moving, and some times it just means you need to wait for the energy to move it. You can also take the strength of an answer as part of the answer: mild, certain, strong.
And that basically sums up how to read a pendulum! Itâs a lot of asking and checking. You can also make pendulum boards for answers which canât be answered with just yes or no. Such board ideas include:
Number board
Letter board
Astrology wheel
Seasons wheel
Months wheel
Past, present, future triangle
The next thing is why youâre reading a pendulum. What is it you can ask a pendulum? Well, again, some donât want to answer certain questions. You know when someone says their pendulum doesnât like test questions? Just like that, some pendulums wonât be happy to answer certain things. Death questions, fatalistic questions, and invasive questions usually fall into that category. But thereâs still so much more to ask! Some ideas include:
What species is your X past life
How many past lives have you had
Is Y a good decision
Will Z happen by H
Whatever your question may be, a pendulum can probably answer it in some way shape or form. Which brings me onto another thing: how can you use a pendulum? Plenty of ways! Hereâs some methods I often find myself using:
If I think Iâve been lied to or someone is trying to haze me, I grab my pendulum (and perhaps a friend also in that situation with a pendulum), I write out many questions around the topic, and I ask them all. Many will be very similar questions or slightly different wording, so that I can get as close to the truth as possible. This works best with another person also doing so, because when your answers align you know its more valid, and if they donât, you can work out why. An example of a session may go like this:
Is E hiding something
Has E omitted the truth
Has E told 100% of the truth
Is E telling the truth about B
Is B fully accurate
Is B actually X
Is B actually Y
Is B affected by Z
And so on. Take your situation and tear it into multiple tiny chunks, then ask all your questions. Write down each answer, then once youâre done, you should have a better idea of the full story.
This is just using a pendulum to arrive at a number. I do this in past life readings. First, I intuitively feel a number, or I am told or see a number or an idea. Letâs say itâs how many lives youâve had. I then do big grouped numbers, e.g. âHas D had more than 50 lives?â no, and from there I go down â40?â no, â30?â no, â20?â yes. Now I know it is over 20 but below 30. Then, try âmore than 25?â no. âHas he had 24 lives?â yes. You get the idea. Big to small, finding the number by shortening the ranges as you get better answers.
This one is very fun to do when you want a new and unique way to pull tarot or oracle cards, pick crystals, or almost anything. Letâs say itâs tarot. Lay out as many cards as you please on your surface, hold your pendulum over them, ask your question, and move your hand with its direction. Itâs pulling left? Move your hand left. Follow itâs pull until it circles over a card. Simple, thatâs the card answering your question! Itâs nothing too serious, just like a physical intuition guide for those who may trust their own intuition a little less. I like to use this method when Iâm having doubtful days.
Thereâs plenty of other wonderful ideas on how to use pendulums out there, like drawing out signs or letters, or carrying them into spiritually charged areas to sense spirit energy. However you wish to use your pendulum, however your pendulum works, thereâs steps you can take to help center yourself and find answers more accurately or clearly:
Carry your pendulum around or put it under your pillow to help strengthen your connection
Talk to it as you ask your questions, just as you may do a friend
Take mild answers and ask questions which can clarify off of it, until youâre happy you understand the answer
Meditate and ground before a pendulum session
Draw tarot cards alongside each answer for more clarity
Spend time understanding your pendulum by writing about it in your grimoire
Be open because your energy affects your pendulum
Aaaaand that sums up my advice on reading pendulums! Your answers may not always be strong, but as long as you understand how your pendulum is working and what you can ask, your journey with it should be long and thought provoking.

The sabbats are holidays celebrated throughout the year on solstices, equinoxes, and the midpoints between them. These sabbats form the Wheel of the year.
There is a controversy surrounding the dates of these holidays, as people celebrate them all over the earth, not only in the northen hemisphere but in the southern too.Â
One viewpoint is that the Sabbats should be celebrated as they were originally created to be⊠in other words, Samhain is October 31st, regardless of where you live. In the Southern Hemisphere, even though you are just gearing up to summer on October 31st, this perspective says that you celebrate the cleansing and releasing, the honouring of the dead just as you would if you lived in the Northern Hemisphere. The other viewpoint (the one I personally agree with) is that you should celebrate when you feel like the season corresponds with the holiday, in other words, your craft, your rules. So if you live in the southern hemisphere, you have the choice.
Iâll be writing the dates for each holiday starting with the northen hemisphere and then the dates that many people celebrate them in the southern hemisphere
