Game-Changing Sites for Writers

A recent search for a specific type of site to help me build new characters led me down a rabbit hole. Normally, that would make me much less productive, but I have found a treasure trove of websites for writers.

Bring Characters/Places to Life

There are a few different places you can use to create a picture of something entirely new. I love this site for making character pictures as references, instead of stock photos or whatever pops up on Google Images.

thispersondoesnotexist: every time you reload the page, this site generates a headshot of someone who doesn't exist. This is great if you're thinking about a character's personality or age and don't have specifics for their facial features yet.

Night Cafe: this is an AI art generator that takes your text prompt and generates an image for it. I tried it for various scenery, like "forest" or "cottage." It takes a minute for your requested photo to load, but no more than maybe five for the program to finish the picture.

Art Breeder: this website has endless images of people, places, and general things. Users can blend photos to create something new and curious visitors can browse/download those images without creating an account. (But if you do want to make an account to create your own, it's free!)

Find Random Places on Earth

You might prefer to set a story in a real-life environment so you can reference that place's weather, seasons, small-town vibe, or whatever you like. If that's the case, try:

MapCrunch: the homepage generates a new location each day and gives the location/GPS info in the top left of the screen. To see more images from previous days, hit "Gallery" in the top left.

Atlas Obscura: hover over or tap the "Places" tab, then hit "Random Place." A new page will load with a randomly generated location on the planet, provide a Google Maps link, and tell you a little bit about the place.

Random World Cities: this site makes randomly selected lists of global cities. Six appear for each search, although you'll have to look them up to find more information about each place. You can also use the site to have it select countries, US cities or US states too.

Vary Your Wording

Thesauruses are great, but these websites have some pretty cool perspectives on finding just the right words for stories.

Describing Words: tell this website which word you want to stop repeating and it will give you tons of alternative words that mean the same thing. It typically has way more options than other sites I use.

Reverse Dictionary: type what you need a word for in Reverse Dictionary's search box and it will give you tons of words that closely match what you want. It also lists the words in order of relevancy, starting with a word that most accurately describes what you typed. (There's also an option to get definitions for search results!)

Tip of My Tongue: this website is phenomenal. It lets you search for that word you can't quite place by a letter in it, the definition, what it sounds like, or even its scrambled letters. A long list of potential options will appear on the right side of the screen for every search.

Hope this helps when you need a hand during your next writing session 💛

College Tennis: Origin Story

Will the once-great Cargill Coyotes succeed in reclaiming the NCAA Div I championship title for the first time since the 90s? Will you succeed in making a name for yourself, both on and off the tennis court? And perhaps more importantly…how much are you willing to sacrifice in pursuit of these dreams?

Start at the bottom as a newly-recruited freshman at Cargill university, and claw your way to the championships. Forge lifelong friendships, pursue budding romances, attend classes, and rush term papers -or party- till the sun comes up.

Fifth update (16 Oct) is here!

Demo | Separate Tumblr [New] | Cast of characters (images)

image

Play as female, male, or non-binary — with options to be straight, gay, or bisexual.

Experience the ups and downs of college life alongside an ensemble of colorful side characters.

Play nail-biting singles and doubles matches (both home and away) throughout the fall and spring seasons - that is, if you make the cut.

Romance the gruff, hot-headed no. 1 seed, an enigmatic, broody international student on your floor, the warm, unflappable team captain, or your nerdy and spirited high-school best friend.

Build (or neglect) your relationships with your teammates, hallmates, coaches, family and friends back home.

image

Rayyan Afiq | Gender of your team* | 20

No. 1 seed, vice captain of the tennis team

Nationality: Egyptian-American

*Follows your gender/gender of your team

Description: 5′7 (f) or 5′10 (m). Muscular, athletic build. Dark, wavy curls, and thick sweeping eyebrows over piercing dark-olive eyes. Tawny, honey-brown skin.

Surly, intense, proud, and intensely focused. One of the most talented players in the American college system currently, and will stop at nothing to win. Will you ever get past their stony exterior, and get to know more than just the machine that they are on-court?

Tobin Harris | Gender of your team* | 21

Captain of the tennis team

Nationality: American

*Follows your gender/gender of your team

Description: 5′10 (f) or 6′1 (m). Tall, lean build. Short black hair, warm, brown eyes and a calm, assured demeanour. Dark bronze skin.

Kind, laid-back, selfless, sociable and gentle to a fault. They go out of their way to make everyone feel welcome, and light up every room they’re in. But they also have a bad habit of putting other people’s emotions in front of their own, and stuffing down their own feelings until it’s too late.

Sam O’Connelly | M or F | 18

Nationality: American

Childhood best friend, plays for the UCLA Bruins

Description: 5′5 (f) or 5′8 (m). Trim build, with a small frame. Slightly curly russet hair. Mischievous light blue eyes.

Adaptable, excitable, scattered, and fun-loving. A competent tennis player, but has too many other interests to concentrate on any one of them. Has a vague fear of commitment, but secretly wants to find something worth holding on to. Will they finally admit their feelings for you, or will they eventually fade with time and distance?

Guillaume/Geneviève Lavigne | M or F | 20

Nationality: French

Third-year exchange student, hallmate.

Description: 5′6 (f) or 5′10 (m). Toned, supple build. Dark, tousled hair with fair skin. Smoky grey eyes, with a smattering of freckles.

Quiet, with a rich and intensely private inner world. Never lets on what they’re actually thinking or feeling. You know almost nothing about them despite living on the same floor. The sheer number of times you bump into them will start to get ridiculous. Coincidence? Perhaps. Fate? Possibly. On purpose?? Most certainly not?

hey instead of bullying or scaring you into switching to firefox, let me tell you why i LOVE firefox and how my online life has improved significantly since installing it

- the setup process is easy, and even fun! if you’re using tumblr rn, you can handle it, and if you’re the kind of tumblr user who likes customizing your blog or tinkering with xkit, you can have a lot of fun personalizing really granular settings and picking themes and extensions and everything, it’s very customizable and i happily spent like 2 hours getting everything perfect.

- you can use a command line entry tool to change specific settings right from the search bar! i did this to make firefox stop auto filling my email information since i use a different password locker (which you should too! try bitwarden!), and it was easier than digging through a bunch of submenus for a setting i wasn’t sure existed. you can just turn shit off!

- there’s a preset theme called aurora that’s purple and VERY pretty

- once you get ublock origin and as many other blockers as you’d like set up, no ads, anywhere, ever! streaming sites, youtube, all the basics, totally no stress and no compatibility issues for me

- in browser screenshot and picture in picture functions!! holy shit i use these every day, the PiP is especially helpful, it replaced an extension i used to use on chrome and it’s leagues better and works on all video content pretty much

- overall better downloads management imo, it’s a lot easier to get to your downloads and find them later

- better bookmark system, with the ability to organize your bookmarks with searchable tags and assign them a shortcut you can type into the search bar to go to

- containers! you can have two accounts to the same website open in two different tabs and switch between them without having to switch accounts. also gives firefox the ability to contain facebook and their trackers, so you can click that party invite link without feeling like you just let mark zuckerberg into your house

these were just off the top of my head, i love firefox a lot and actively enjoy using it, which i never felt with chrome! please download firefox!! you will not regret it!!! where’s your fucking rage!!!!!! go!!!!!!!!!

CHAPTER 2 HAS BEEN UPDATED!

This includes:

A nightmare scene with some variations involved

For MCs with Wits as their main skill, an exclusive optional nightmare route (Hint: Follow the voice)

More conversations with Alex, and with Vincent.

Assassins

Some overview on the police department and the Ripper’s relationship with their colleagues. (which is, not very good)

A flashback scene

Nickname option added on Chapter 1, as well the choice to use the Ripper’s mother’s maiden name (Note: The mother canonically has a Filipino heritage).

Mental health stats such as stress and cynicism amongst others are implemented, though they remain hidden from the stats page for now.

Additional 58,475 words excluding codes!

Old saves will not properly work, so apologies for that! I also advise you to keep a save for the start of Chapter 2, since I’ll be putting the next part on the same file, and dashingdon always reverts its saves to the beginning of the chapters whenever an update is made.

The Exile - Chapter Five, Part One

She's here... and she's a big one. This is easily the biggest chapter I've ever written in terms of variety, and honestly most of it is thanks to the fight scene alone.

I would highly recommend playing through a few times with some different commanders (if you have more than one)! There are some big secrets to be found this chapter >:3

Note to Code Divers.

We're at the point where the plot is beginning to thicken up and a lot of interweaving stories are going to be introduced.

By code diving you'll spoil the game to yourself (obviously). And, obviously, the game is meant to be played through blind. While I can't control what you choose to look at or spoil for yourself, I do ask that you keep yourself from spoiling the story for others.

This means do not share "sensitive/spoilery" code with others and do not use the code for your public theories. Because at that point it's not really a theory-- it's just spoiling the game.

Thank you!

Avg. Play length: 90k -> 114k Total Wordcount: 530k -> 818k

Read Below!

Trigger Warnings - There are no new trigger warnings. However, Chapter 5 starts with an incredibly graphic and emotionally intense scene.

Note: You'll have to play from the beginning. Your save files may still be there, but there's a high chance they won't work with the new chapter. Start from the beginning. Save yourself the pain. 😔

Play Chapter 5!

(Send bugs to my tumblr inbox or report them in the discord #bug-report channel. Either one works! And yes, there will be a lot of them 🙃)

Heart of Battle is out now!

Heart Of Battle Is Out Now!

Battle for love as a gladiator in this epic romance of swords and sandals!

Heart of Battle is a 255,000-word interactive gladiator romance by Fay Ikin, where your choices control the story. It’s entirely text-based—without graphics or sound effects—and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

As a prisoner of Coritan City, you had two options: rot in a dungeon or battle in the gladiatorial arena. You chose to fight—and as a star gladiator, you have the power to sway public opinion as nobody else does.

The city is divided, ruled by the glittering Illustrious who use their wealth and status to maintain their power over the struggling masses. A lucky few have access to magic as well: it can be used to heal, but it can also be used as a weapon, or to reinforce the bars of prisons.

Below them, rumors of revolution simmer—and nowhere more strongly than among the gladiators. Former soldiers, political prisoners, and prisoners of war now bide their time, plotting to rise up. Some just hope to escape to their own freedom; others want to bring down the entire oppressive system. Yet others seek to work within the hierarchy, currying favor among the Illustrious in the hopes of having their freedom bought by a wealthy patron.

In this treacherous web of alliances that you must navigate, the one certainty is your own heart. Will you find love with a gentle healer, haunted by a tragic past? A wealthy patron who could promise you a life of luxury? Or even one of your fellow gladiators, whose muscles and martial skill you admire through every battle: a fervent ex-revolutionary now condemned to the same servitude as you, or a bold daring warrior who seeks fame and glory.

What skills will you bring to the battlefield: domineering strength, agile cunning or force of personality? Will you accept your fate and build a reputation as a respectable, honorable fighter, relying on the aristocrats to free you? Or will you throw in with the rebels? Victory can mean a better life for you and your beloved—but what will you do if you find yourself on the opposite side of a gladiatorial match from the one you love? Or on the opposite side of a revolution?

Play as male, female, or non-binary; trans or cis; gay, straight, bi, demisexual, asexual, or aromantic.

Romance a gentle healer; a glory-hound gladiator; a wealthy patron; or an ex-revolutionary.

Choose your weapon: fight with sword, mace, bow, daggers, or bladed gauntlet.

Negotiate your way through relationships with your superiors, walk the balance of power between gladiators and guards, and clash with a bitter rival.

Win battles with honor, or scheme and cheat to take down your enemies.

Incite a riot—or even a revolution!

ATTOLLO 2 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

ATTOLLO 2 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Hello, everyone!! I'm very pleased to announce the upcoming 2nd year anniversary of Attollo come September 10th. 2 years is a long time, but I'm incredibly delighted (and a bit shocked still, to be honest) to have come this far!

As a thank you to everyone for the support I have received so far with the game, I am eager to announce two things that will be released this day:

A miniature lore book of Attollo that you can download and read (light and dark modes will be accessible). This will include a little authors note on the story by yours truly and then a breakdown of the City, the major cast, the secondary cast, and other characters that you will meet along the way. This is also an excellent introduction to the game if you're on the fence about it! Tips about the game may be included as well.

Original works. These will consist of posts throughout the day discussing what Attollo was BEFORE it became Attollo and was simply known as 'Mammon'. With this, characters first editions will be discussed and contrasted to their current forms, including notes on how the changes came to be.

I look forward to September 10th, and thank you all in advanced for your support!

(P.S—check out The Nameless by @parkerlyn and the amazing 2 year anniversary event that's being hosted there as well, also taking place September 10th!)

Demo Update Chapter 2 Part 3

Chapter 2 Part 3 is now Live!

Demo

Have at it!

Demo Update Chapter 2 Part 3

Shenanigans aside, as previously stated this update includes just over 170,000 words, which covers Peyton, Peidyn, Abelyn, and Anadora’s Romance, Platonic, and Friendship Routes (where you can still see their scenes without being on their specific path).

The update will have Broken your save files so make sure to start a fresh game.

Update Notes and Details Below:

There are now four accessibility settings, some old, a few new.

The Unicode Hints, and Panic Switch you should all be familiar with by now. The Script Display and Weights and Measures Switches, not so much.

There is a full explanation in the demo, but in brief:

The Scripts Display switch gives you the ability to swap between using Old English letters like the wynn Ƿ, and using the standard Roman Alphabet. It also changes the display of certain words to match their pronunciation with a British English accent. Since I'm well aware that only a minority of my readership have such an accent I've also included a rough transcript of each word using the IPA on each of the word's journal page.

The Weights and Measures switch allows you to switch between the in story measurements system and the metric system.

All the accessibility switches can be accessed at any point during the game from the Stats Screen Menu.

There are gaps present in the Stats Screen Journal Pages. I ran out of time and brain power before the release deadline -_-

I'll try and get a mini patch out by the end of the week to fix this.

I hope you all enjoy reading the new update, and as always feedback and bug reports are much appreciated.

Now, unless any major bugs emerge in the next 30 minutes or so, I'm off to collapse in a heap.

Have fun everyone!

Skip Google for Research

As Google has worked to overtake the internet, its search algorithm has not just gotten worse.  It has been designed to prioritize advertisers and popular pages often times excluding pages and content that better matches your search terms

As a writer in need of information for my stories, I find this unacceptable.  As a proponent of availability of information so the populace can actually educate itself, it is unforgivable.

Below is a concise list of useful research sites compiled by Edward Clark over on Facebook. I was familiar with some, but not all of these.

Google is so powerful that it “hides” other search systems from us. We just don’t know the existence of most of them. Meanwhile, there are still a huge number of excellent searchers in the world who specialize in books, science, other smart information. Keep a list of sites you never heard of.

www.refseek.com - Academic Resource Search. More than a billion sources: encyclopedia, monographies, magazines.

www.worldcat.org - a search for the contents of 20 thousand worldwide libraries. Find out where lies the nearest rare book you need.

https://link.springer.com - access to more than 10 million scientific documents: books, articles, research protocols.

www.bioline.org.br is a library of scientific bioscience journals published in developing countries.

http://repec.org - volunteers from 102 countries have collected almost 4 million publications on economics and related science.

www.science.gov is an American state search engine on 2200+ scientific sites. More than 200 million articles are indexed.

www.pdfdrive.com is the largest website for free download of books in PDF format. Claiming over 225 million names.

www.base-search.net is one of the most powerful researches on academic studies texts. More than 100 million scientific documents, 70% of them are free

I appreciate the behind-the-scenes we get into your worldbuilding. It's fun getting to learn random history trivia that must've come from hours of research and Wikipedia rabbit holing, and you seem to be enjoying yourself. Thanks for all the work you put into the game, it really shows!

Awww! Thank you so much!

To be honest, a daily occurrence I have with my friends and family is me bouncing into a room and starting with the line:

'Pub quiz fact for you, did you know...'

The nice thing now is that I have a whole bunch of folks other than my long-suffering nearest and dearest to plague with random bits of antiquated trivia!

For example:

In a textual sources sense it is believed by some that the Werewolf is a largely French originating creature. They had some rather terrifying problems with wolf attacks throughout their history, and this is reflected in their folklore. See the Beast of Gévaudan for a good example.

It's stated in the Oxford Dictionary of English Folklore that:

'Although Gervase of Tilbury wrote in 1211 that werewolves were common throughout England, the examples he then gave are all French'.

However, while I was off looking up two entirely different creatures, namely one 'Raw Head' and one 'Bloody Bones', I came across this extract from around 1550:

Or put a difference betwene their Grādmothers tale of Bloudy bone, Raw head, Bloudelesse and Ware woulf, and the Churches Doctrine of Hell and the Deuill.

John Rastell - A treatise intitled, Beware of M.Iewel. Vol 3

I definitely want to find out more about Bloodless whatever they may be, and interesting that Rastell uses the Werewolf in a similar context of Grandmother's tales as very English figures of Raw Head and Bloody Bones. Does imply, though certainly not in any way prove, that there might be more of a werewolf tradition here than previously suspected.

Would anyone be interested in a Twitch stream Friday?

If so, what times work best for people? Would you rather see a beginner Twine/IF tutorial or more in-depth UI design/coding? (I may experiment more with writing streams in the future, but for now I think coding/tutorial focused stuff works better for streaming)

Anniversary Celebration And Chapters 1 & 2 Update

Happy one-year game anniversary! ✨😱🥳

I know it’s not the 9th in most places in the world, but it is in some! And I’m impatient 😆✨ anyway—one year! Isn’t that amazing? Time flies when you’re having fun 😅 Thank you all for giving me such a warm welcome to all this 💖 without your support and kindness, this would have remained a small little writing exercise 😳

As thanks for sticking by me and the game, I wanted to give all of you something. But as the new chapter 3 and 4 update isn’t done yet, I had to do the next best thing! I’ve updated chapters 1 and 2 with a little over 6 thousand new words, which feature content such as:

Extended Lestrade sandwich scene

Ask Watson about Lestrade

New price if you win the heads or tails game 😉

Steal Lestrade’s flask?

Multiple new choices and edits to make it easier to play a soft bickering Lestrade relationship 💖 (if you still want to be yelled at, make sure you make them mad before gloating rudely or obliviously)

And more!

I hope you like it and have a great weekend! ❤️

When I tell you I am SO excited to romance Jost😩 My commander's about to lose it for this angry snake lady. She wants to stab me? Totally Acceptable!! Where would you like to hit first, take your PICK madame! You like to write and document your travels?? Ohoho excuse me while I PURCHASE EVERY NICE JOURNAL IN PRYTHIAN.🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️ Darlin has a big storm coming for her in the shape of a 👏🏼 very👏🏼 huggable👏🏼 and👏🏼 loving 👏🏼 Gorgon Commander Thank You Very Much

Every Jost romancer has this energy and I can't even pretend I'm any different when I'm the exact same in any IF that is not my own 😔 Scary women with hidden, soft depths are a universal weakness. And they do deserve a bit of stabbing... as a treat <3

We all know MC isn't the most unbiased narrator, so what was really going on in Golden Scorpion's mind when they saw their former commander almost kill Overseer from behind bars? How'd they feel when they couldn't get MC to let go right away?

Ooh, okay. So I love this scene a lot and I need to set up the variations + reasoning for those before getting to the core of the question!

There are two versions of the prison scene-- one with hardened!Trystan and one with softened!Trystan. In the first version, Trystan is the one antagonizing MC, and as such, if you choose to lunge out and attack someone, you end up attacking Trystan themself. Otherwise, if you're playing with a softened!Trystan, The Overseer is the one antagonizing MC and, as a result, is the one who is grabbed.

Another fun fact is that in the hardened version, Trystan is just as strong as MC is and has chance of completely overpowering them. If they're physically stronger, they'll nearly break MC's arm again. Otherwise, if they lose, they goad MC into hurting them more... mostly b/c they're not scared. They're angry and unhinged-- laughing and smiling as MC threatens to break their neck in half.

In the softened version, however, Trystan has no chance of overpowering MC. It doesn't have to do with the physical part of it-- both Trystan's are just as strong as the other-- but the mental part. Trystan is scared of MC in that scene. They're watching someone they looked up to snap a second time-- though this one is undeniably on purpose and intentional.

You look at Trystan. They look at you. There's no emotions to be found other than a child-like confusion in their eyes. The longer you look at them, the more they begin to look like a child. A kid.

To Trystan, it's upsetting to see The Commander like this-- to see how far they've fallen. It's not pity but genuine distress, and the ever growing gut-feeling that they're the MC's enemy now.

And... well, they've seen what happens to The Commander's enemies.

IT’S HERE

IT’S HERE

Case Two: Chapter Four (“DNR/DNI”) is available to play here!

This update brings you 10,500+ words of new content, bringing the total wordcount of Citadel 123,000+ words! Unfortunately, I think you’ll have to replay starting at Case Two: Chapter One but I highly suggest you take this opportunity to make at least two save files:

> one where your intern goes to the party

> one where your intern stays home and does research

As I hinted at before, there are variable endings (three in total) to Case Two: Chapter Four, and this way you’ll get to experience all of them!

As always, feedback is appreciated. Let me know what your favorite moment in the chapter was - I’d love to hear it!

For coding errors, please let me know which line the error occurs at (ChoiceScript should display it in their error message).

Reblogs, as always, are more than welcome ✨
