they play their own game of pick and choose — his comments on the masses do little to appeal her to go out of her way to ask for another favor from another person she would rather not spend a second of her time with.
the thought, itself, made her moment here with seunghyun seem the slightest bit more bearable than any of the other options made available. at least she wouldn’t get hit on, proposed to, and/or suddenly arranged to be married. all of things she was trying to avoid with seunghyun’s mother — but her way with words was all too tempting.
her eyes follow his line of sight to a woman in dangerously tall heels and a purse that looked like it was from marry poppin’s on xanax. “oh, she seems to love you.” then she frowns, eyes redirected to his seemingly nonchalance. “what ish? does she get nicer whenever she gets a touch up on her migrating zyderm?” lili was more preferential to eating her duck rather than seeing it on the face of some over-aged mistress.
Seunghyun snorts. "Nothing? Nothing at all? What a shame..." He knew so little about Lili other than his mother's infatuation with her bone structure - but she was beginning to seem a lot more foolish than she looked. Who would subject themselves to an evening of this willingly?
He bends to swipe at his pant leg with a subtle scowl, rising up to cross his arms over his chest. He eyes the elder waddling this way and that by the terrace's edge, muttering something to himself.
"Do you know who that is?" the model asks with a quirk of his brow. "New appointee on the board of directors at Hanhwa group. Total basket case. If I even so much as say hello I'm going to be stuck listening to him babble on for the next three hours..."
He scans the area for a moment, spying a woman frantically searching through her purse. He can't quite put a finger on it but she seems so familiar... They lock eyes and she frowns almost immediately. Oh, that's right. One of his mother's acquaintances whose shifting filler he just found so interesting ( and often commented on it quite loudly ). "Why don't you ask her? She's friendly. ...Ish."
pretty girl, bored out of her mind, now with a missing cig and a cursed migraine on the horizon — what was she to do. all she had really wanted to do was get out of the noise and smoke but even that was now out of the question. it was almost too easy to feel the spike of irritation at her nape — oh god, was that her blood pressure on the rise?
she feigns offense — not that what he says strays an offensive line when in reality, lili would have been a fool to pay a helping hand with nothing to bargain with. and yet — “what?” a scoff cuts clean as she looks him in the eye, “nothing — she didn’t offer me anything.” it was safer to say that it wasn’t really what the woman offered that lili was after, it was vanity that lili was after, anyways. a glance to some point of ambiguity in the distance clears her conscience — if there was anything left of it.
“ugh.” lili nearly stomps a frustrated sole, then remembers where she is and turns on said heel — eyes taking in where they are once more. loitering about with scattered boomers in every direction. hm.
tapping a pointed toe against seunghyun’s shin to get his attention, she points, in no way Inconspicuous as she should have been, to a man not too far off from their path. “go ask him for a smoke.”
Seunghyun supposes he should be impressed. His mother had really outdone herself orchestrating such an event under the guise of casual 'networking.'
While her crowd of middle-aged socialites would normally send Seunghyun up the wall, she'd done a remarkable job of wrangling a few smaller designers for a short appearance. And if the incentive of mingling with future contacts wasn't enough to keep him there, the threat of falling out of his father's good graces again surely was ( at least thanks to Seungah's poor showing in the press as of late, his position had been rather stable and he had no intentions of changing that ). All this just to keep Seunghyun in place long enough to be shoved into yet another playdate.
While he had no qualms with entertaining his mother's antics for one evening, if he had to hear another word about Lili's harmonious features or glass skin his head would be going right into the fountain along with that cigarette.
"We?" he answers with a quirk of his brow. "Well, I'm not about to go fishing for it. It's your fault it even fell in." And him making a haphazard grab for it in the first place had absolutely nothing to do with their current predicament at all.
"This whole thing is such a bore..." he groans, giving a huff as he perches himself awkwardly along the edge of the fountain. "What did she offer you this time, anyway? It had to have been some sort of bribery... Or was it blackmail?"
note to self: no compliment is worth a lost ciggy rip — @shxlgc
this is what lili gets for going out with a guy just because his mom said she had pretty ankles.
that would have been lili’s excuse if said ‘going out’ weren't as obvious as inconspicuous happenings that were cleverly dressed up as accidental — it was all a ploy to somehow worm lili into their little hellhole of a family and here she was, eating it all up just because seunghyun’s mom just so happened to think her facial symmetry was proportional to aphrodite ( her words not lili’s, mind you! ) — yeah, maybe lili was that vain.
and probably an ounce too shallow — but if she could get compliments on the daily from a woman who kissed up to her just because she had half the hope that her grandchildren could look as pretty as lili did just from merely growing up ( and not undergoing a pricey knife ahem seungah ahem ) then maybe lili wouldn’t mind it.
until she realizes just who her supposed husband to be would be — this guy, glaring daggers at her as they both stood at the helm of a fountain, staring into its depths as they look on in misery. their sole saving grace to this dull party had sunk to the bottom of this marble moat.
fuck — and that had been her last one.
“nice going, genius — now what are we supposed to do?” she frowns, looking around to see if any other geezers were loitering about with an extra they could bum off of.
