14 years vs. 18 years
I think Duncan didn't recognize Mal due to how much he changed. At 14, he'd be around 5'8, but at 17, he's 6'6. His hair is also significantly longer, and his skin would be tanner.
Do I believe Mal was "running juvie" at 12-16? No 💀. He was definitely someone who fought to win, but seeing him on TDAS, he definitely didn't have the socialization skills to command ppl.
Personal hc: Mal doesn't care what he eats. He mainly eats to survive, so prison food and tdi gruel were the same to him. This also makes him an atrocious cook
I love toxic Malcun (NOT ABUSIVE) in the way that Duncan needs constant attention and validation and is incredibly jealous. And Mal just provides all that. He hates other people except for Duncan, he's a (past) criminal, and he doesn't go outside.
Mal loves that he can be rough (like biting or wrestling to show affection), and he doesn't have to hide from the fact he's creepy and sadistic since Duncan already knew that from Juvie/All-stars. When Mal says he hates everyone, he doesn't mean Duncan.
They're both in a codependent relationship with each other, and it isn't healthy, but it's like an addiction that they both can't stop.

i wanna be happy and scroll on the mike / mal td tags but then i come across posts of people forgetting that theyre actually a system and are, infact, stuck in the same body. and its like . i wanna see more funny moments !! like yeah mal can be in a band but like imagine if mike ended up fronting during a practice by accident and didnt know what to do,,, maybe im self projecting
adding on (or maybe changing??): headcannon that like 3 people (zoey / duncan / cameron) were actually suspicious but also played along because chris is fucked up and evil and wanted money
it would explain why all stars is such a fever dream, and why theres do many plot holes, because they just needed drama for the show!!! zoey and cam still didnt know about mal until maybe a little later than the moon episode but mike got an opportunity from chris to make money and when he told mal (chaos loving freak) he said yes as long as people who took care of him didnt actually get hurt (this may be ooc how its worded but trust its way different in my head i just cant word)
headcanon that at least half of mal's overdramatic theatre kid level villain antics came from knowing he was on camera 24/7 and knowing that making himself interesting would keep them on the show longer (i firmly believe that chris occasionally rigs the voting based on fan popularity) and that mal was like 50 steps ahead with who he let realize he's not mike, making sure the fans knew, keeping drama with other contestants, etc etc. this is heavily based in our mal fictive's source memories but yk yk
