Finding my mom's doctoral essay

We make loads of jokes about boomers' incapability concerning tech, so I'd like to present a new aspect: The moment of bonding when showing your parents something they, too, can love about this new world.

My mom was just reminiscing about her student days, and I suggested we look up her doctoral work. She laughed and said she never published it, we wouldn't find it.

But there it was, first hit on Google Scholar. The quiet happy laugh of pride when she saw how many had cited her and used her work for further studies was... beautiful.

So next time you're loosing an argument against your scoffing dad about the merits of today's tech, try thinking of something he'd love about it. Maybe it's seeing a Cristal clear replay of a tennis match. Maybe it's connecting to other hobbyists on forums.

Yeah, the internet is a scary place. So, instead of giving up on it as a toxic swamp, how about we use the beautiful parts and make it habitable again :)

Ally

I feel the need to say this. You do not need to be directly affected or apart of a community or situation to be an ally to that community or movement.I have seen so many people getting hate for supporting a movement or standing by a community that they are not apart of.  for example, you do not need to be apart of the LGBTQ+ community to support them and stand by them against all their oppression. you do not need to be black or native american or latino to understand that the oppression they face is unjust and they are equal to everyone else. we should all stand by each other and build each other up.

Any social entrepreneurs worth their (fair-trade, alder-smoked) sea salt will have an "our story" section on their website, explaining how a college trip to Guatemala or a grandmother's devotion to fresh produce inspired the company's current mission. "It's not just 'my candles are great', it's 'and then I went to Java and discovered this wax and this is a part of my journey, here's a picture,'" says Deresiewicz. "Goods now all have to be experiences.

Boomers: All right, which one of you are going to clean up our messes?

Millennials: What? Gen Z: What?

Millennials: Seriously? We have like no power. You ensured that most of us were saddled with crippling debt, and haven’t raised the minimum wage enough to keep up with inflation so we can never pay back that debt, and have barely enough income to share an apartment with one or two roommates. We’re lucky if we can find one with a washer and dryer in-unit within our price range! We’re so tired and over-worked that we barely have enough energy to text a friend or post a selfie on facebook to let people know we’re still alive. How are we supposed to clean up your messes??

Boomers: Whatever. Entitled lazy Millennials. Always on your phone and posting selfies. Maybe if you worked harder you wouldn’t be in debt. Always wanting things handed to you on a platter. It’s not all about you you know. Generation Me amiright?

Millennials: *sigh*

Boomers: All right, how about you, Gen Z? You’re fresh, young, haven’t got much debt yet, you have your whole shining future ahead of you! You can be an inspiration to the world! How are you going to clean up our messes?

Gen Z: Um, we don’t really have any power either. Most of us aren’t even old enough to vote.

Boomers: Don’t put yourselves down! You’re the future! Put your young minds to work! Maybe you’ll think of solutions we’ve never even considered! Let us know what they are and we’ll implement them for you!

Gen Z: Um, ok. Stop destroying the environment by switching to clean energy instead of drilling for oil. Cut your carbon emissions to slow and eventually halt climate change. Raise minimum wage and give people health care so that we survive into adulthood and can help you clean this mess.

Millennials: I mean, these are the things we’ve been trying to tell them for years, but maybe they’ll actually listen to you since you’re the bright shiny future.

Boomers: What? We wouldn’t even consider doing any of that! What do you know about politics, economics, and the environment anyway? You’re not even old enough to vote! Where do you think the money for all these changes is going to come from? Money doesn’t grow on trees.

Gen Z: Tax the rich.

Boomers: What?! The rich worked hard for their money! It’s really hard pleasing your parents so that you can inherit the fortunes! They have a right to hoard away all the wealth so that no one else can have any.

Gen Z: Okay Boomer.

Boomers: WHAT? How dare you insult us! You know, you’d get a lot more respect if you would try and talk to us instead of being so dismissive of everything we say!

Gen Z: *SIGH*

More comfortable online than out partying, post-Millennials are safer, physically, than adolescents have ever been. But they’re on the brink of a mental-health crisis.

I hate how my biggest goals in life rn are to have a steady 9-5 that doesn't completely mentally drain me, and allows me to have an actual life work balance, live in my own 1 bedroom apartment with no roommates, where I can eat healthy homecooked food and actually own a functioning car I can drive. Why the fuck is that considered a wild dream nowadays? This was literally the standard/minimum like 20 years ago. Wtf. I don't want to do this anymore this whole world is bullshit why are human dignity(and rights) becoming a pipedream

Hey millennials...

Now what we aren't going to do is send anyone hate for what fandom they grew up in. We love media that helps us grow and learn. We were children.

a hard take on today's music (especially pop and tiktok songs)

looks are more important today. they all sound the same. music doesn't mean anything anymore. yesterday: hit, tomorrow: forgotten. short shallow songs. same old shit spit out and shitted out by consuming too much milk. boring, always the same, sometimes even plagiarized. bring back the value, bring back mtv times, bring back the time when we waited in front of the radio for our favorite song from our favorite artist. bring back music and forget the trash like it was supposed to be, quote: the labels.

I'm not saying that everyone out there is making bad music but most people don't stand out or just copy.

I think the difference between gen z and the millennials is this:

millennials were born into a world that promised them economic prosperity and hope- a promise that of course was not delivered.

by the time gen z understood what an economy was, they also understood it was futile to dream that they could possibly achieve any prosperity at all.

It is WILD to me how different people my age and older who didn't grow up with paranoid parents feel about cell phones.

They think of them as symbolizing a lack of freedom, where kids have to check in with and are instantly reachable by their parents, if not outright GPS tracked.

I think of my first phone fondly. It was the only reason I was allowed to go anywhere or do anything at all. Sure, I was expected to answer my parents' calls immediately and call them the minute I knew it if I was going to be even a millisecond late, but I was ALLOWED to do at least a few things thanks to them knowing that I always kept my phone charged with the ringer on.

I guess when you're not caged, a leash looks like restriction, but if you are kept under lock and key, a leash means a little taste of freedom.

20’s

I thought my 20’s would be different. I thought it would adventures with my friends, lots of nights in the arms of someone I love, and working like a dog making a name for myself in my career.

It’s not like that. I spend most of my nights alone and forgetting my value because I’m so lonely. As for the career thing, well goddamn me for thinking my path forward would be more sensical.

Tonight is just one of those nights where I’ll probably cry, listen to sad songs, burn gas driving around then come back home accepting my fate. The loneliness I feel hurts my skin, my head and my heart. Why does living feel so overrated? My thoughts feel like they’re on shuffle. I wish I wasn’t so tormented. I thought I’d found peace... I guess it’s back to the drawing board.
