James: Hey Evans, if you were in a car and me and Sirius were in front of you, what would you hit?

Lily: You, definitely.

James: Have you seriously not heard that one before? You hit the break, stupid.

Lily: No, I’ve heard that joke before, I just wanna hit you with a car.

new thoughts for this post

i really want to do an alternating chapter fic.

i’ve already started said fic here.

and it starts with james escaping with harry, and kickstarting an au where harry grows up with his father while voldemort survives halloween night.

BUT

imagine if the even numbered chapters were an au where lily survives. she doesn’t flee upstairs, she RUNS. she takes her son and she doesn’t look back. she thinks james is behind her, but eventually realizes that it was peter chasing her.

and, basically, at the end, the au’s connect in some way. in as close to a happy ending as possible (😬). i don’t want to spoil everything i have planned so far. but i’m so excited lolol.

just— two alternative universes where both parents are single handedly trying to raise their son in a failed world. trying to stay alive when every corner they turn could be the end.

i love them :,) tragically

harry potter au where james is still alive, but lily still sacrificed herself.

i’m thinking she had her wand, james didn’t, she made him take harry and run. and she was so infuriated and frightening, that james listened to her, praying to the whole universe that she would make it out alive. they had their final, desperate kiss. and then she was running towards the explosion at their doorstep.

he ran into the darkness, grabbing his broom and sobbing with his sleeping son in his arms as blue and green lights flashed through their windows. he took off and forced himself not to look back. because he would’ve ruined everything if he had.

he made it somewhere over the ocean, looking over dark waves as the sun rose again. he was freezing, but harry was watching him silently from his blanket. they were still in their pajamas. harry had always loved their broom rides, but he didn’t giggle like he usually did.

they eventually go into hiding. he reads about lily’s death through the paper, dealing with the grief on his own.

he reads about sirius’ arrest, and peters death. then, he reads about voldemort slowly taking over the ministry one department at a time. making it harder and harder for muggle born witches and wizards to come and go. then, it’s remus’ arrest after killing fenrir greyback in a blind fit of werewolf bloodlust.

he grieves again, because he’s truly alone.

while out shopping, polyjuice potion disguising him as he sorts through produce, he catches a cat watching him from the stoop of the small store. then, a familiar nose that makes him grab his son. then, a rippled vision of his best friend.

he pays five minutes later, because harry was much too thin to go a day without good food. and he tries to run. but, he’s quickly caught, and the flurry of spells he tries to send at the men are deflected with awful, sympathetic grimaces.

he doesn’t relent until the cat finally transforms, a cold hand patting his cheek as his favorite professor pulls him into a tight embrace.

it takes possibly too much convincing, but eventually he’s making them chai, and keeping harry protectively close. they ask him to rejoin the order, to let them protect him. protect harry.

he screamed at them, only catching himself haphazardly when harry began to cry. but he’d been so full of wrath as they spoke, like he hadn’t experienced the torture of own failure. like everyone he’d ever loved wasn’t gone.

all, except his son. he wouldn’t allow the order to fail them a second time.

he’d never seen severus or regulus look so defeated. like he was someone they cared about, and they weren’t sure how to comfort him. like they were friends. he bluntly reminded them that his friends were as good as dead. minerva teared up.

he packed everything up with a rushed spell, and took harry away with the three of them still sitting behind steaming mugs.

he took to teaching harry everything he could. going through old books that his own parents had collected. some of his own from school, which held idiotic notes that he’d cry over late at night.

a few months after harry had turned five, it was severus (of all people) who found them again.

lol. this got too long and i’m still thinking about how the plot would go. i’ll possibly post more parts as i think of them. i already know if or when i do write this as a proper fic, it’ll be long. i crave james angst i fear. possible ship recommendations would be appreciated for consideration. i don’t promise anything, but romance can make things so much more tragic 🤭

Ahaaaaa Id been wanting to put up this ask but the box wasnt working for me till now lol sorry.... Romione - Historical AU, Fake Marriage... Romione again coz im mad about it, Bar/Restaurant AU with Teacher AU...Bonus if the Teacher is Ron coz Hermione sucks at teaching tbh...m sorry but yea...And Jily Royal AU with poorly timed confessions...Love your writing <333

So this took the longest time to finish, but I wanted to make it right

Romione (Historical AU – Fake Marriage):

The Granger and Weasley families were rivals. One family warriors and adventurers working for the crown and banks. The other with more than half of them working as healers. The youngest son of the Weasley family, Ron, and the only daughter and heiress to the Granger family, Hermione, both knew that if the feud kept on going, both families would cease to exist.

There was an arrangement made between the two of them. They would marry in order for the two families to cease their seemingly eternal feud. And it worked. The feud had been over. There were celebrations, parties and balls made in the honor of the young newlywed couple.

But there was something that no one knew about the couple. And it was the mutual intolerance of one another. Ron believed that Hermione was a stuck-up nagging know-it-all that seemed to always need to be in the right. Hermione believed that Ron was an immature insensitive tactless man-child that had the apparent need to always swear.

But unknown to one another they became more and more smitten. They couldn’t let the other know. How could Hermione know that Ron thought that her wild brown hair made his heart beat somehow faster whenever he saw her in the morning? How her scrunched nose whenever she read a book was the most adorable thing he’d ever seen in another human?

How could Ron ever know that Hermione’s breath would almost stop completely whenever his large hands came in contact with her skin? How his blue eyes were the most beautiful shade of blue she had ever come across?

During a ball in Christmas Eve, Ron had a little bit too much to drink, desperate for an escape from his constant and undying pining towards Hermione. Then, Viktor Krum, a successful and famed boxer, had made an appearance and had danced with her throughout the night. She had called him out trying to stop him from possibly drinking himself to death, but Ron wasn’t having it.

“For once stop being a nightmare!” He had told her in an abandoned hallway. Her eyes filled with tears as her heart broke, and she ran towards the forests where no one could hear her crying.

Ron could only watch the back of her head with those curls that he so desire to sink his fingers into. He returned to the party after drinking a made-up hangover tonic that was in the pantry that managed to sober him up.

“WOLVES!” a quivering and scared voice yelled in the middle of the Living Room. “WOLVES HAVE BEEN SPOTTED NEAR THE MANOR!”

A sudden fear, so paralyzing that he thought if the world had stopped spinning for a whole minute, and then, Ron’s legs were moving before he realized.

Hermione sat on a rock by the lake. Her head in her hands as tears strolled down her cheeks. She sniffed and whined, not noticing the three wolves that had appeared just a couple of feet in front her. She raised her head. She knew she should’ve screamed for her help, but she became petrified. The middle wolf growled at her and as he went to lounge at her she covered her face, just to hear the wolf whimper along the voice of her husband.

“OI!” he bellowed. “Shit brain!”

Ron had thrown a sharp rock so hard the wolf had started to bleed, it escaped leaving two feral wolves to deal with. Ron threw another rock this time upwards hitting a large but weak branch that fell on top of a second wolf trapping him. The last wolf simply left seeing no worth in continuing the attack.

Ron was on Hermione at once hugging her as tight as she could. He laid apology after apology on her. He was crying, he realized how close he was to losing her. She was crying, she realized she hadn’t told him how she felt, she might’ve not had the chance if he hadn’t come.

They looked at one another. An unspoken agreement of blue crashing with brown. Their lips were on one another in a second, dancing with the other as they kissed for the first time. Her lips were softer than his dreams had thought of them. After perhaps making up for months constant pining and wanting they detached, their foreheads touching as their breaths hit their faces.

“Marry me,” he said. She laughed as if what he’d said was ridiculous.

“We’re already married.”

“Don’t care. I married you for them,” she didn’t need him to specify who was them. “I want to marry you.” A smile formed on her face as he kissed him some more.

“I will.”

Jily (Royal AU – Poorly Timed Confessions):

Prince James was someone who princess Lily always thought of as arrogant, pompous. A no good brat who alway got what he wanted.

They met at the engagement ball of prince Sirius and princess Pandora, the two were close to the bride and the groom, but it was more out of obligation more than anything else that the two spend time together. In preparation for the wedding the two prepared the ball, it had been nothing short of a disaster.

Prince James had fallen in love the second he had set his eyes on Lily, she was perfect, the perfect red hair, green eyes, slender figure with the wisdom of Athena. Lily herself had taken notice of James's attractive features, his brown eyes and messy hair that looked like a tornado had gone through it.

But then the arrogant idiot prince had to open his mouth and ruin everything. He was nothing short of a complete abuser of his power, making fun of people at every chance he had and boasting about his expert sword-handling. He also had the incredibly awful habit of making fun of princess Lily's closest friend Severus Snape.

It was on the week before the wedding when she had enough, prince James had humiliated Severus publicly and Lily had done her best to defend him, but when he James finally relented his continuous abusive ministrations he had called her the most awful of names someone could call another person.

She left that same day, losing a life-long friendship, but also freeing herself from prince James.

On the day of what was supposed to be prince Sirius and Pandora she had been told that the wedding had been cancelled. It was an arranged marriage, everyone knew that, but after some encouraging from prince James, Sirius had decided to run away to Potter Castle with prince James.

It was so that James and Lily didn't see each other for the next two years, but she would often hear of his adventures, his new and constant battles as he freed towns from oppressive bandits with nothing but his sword. She would hear of his charitable actions regarding the poor people of his kingdom.

When they finally met again, it was like meeting a whole different person. The cocky and arrogant attitude while still there, had died down a lot, his kindness was something truly amazing and so was his compassion. Princess Lily hated herself for even thinking it, but she was falling in love, at least that's what she thought as she had never felt what she did for prince James, for any other person.

There was a problem, however, prince James seemed to had forgotten about her. Although the two stayed on amicable terms there were no more propositions of marriage or courting only subtle nods or quick greetings.

And then the news came to her, he was soon getting engaged, his parents were already too old and they desired to see prince James married and with a child. And so being his usual selfless self prince James had organized a huge ball where multiple women, royal or not, were to attend so that he may choose a proper wife.

Princess Lily hadn't received an invitation and when she found out she didn't waste another second and set out. As she entered the ball room she saw him standing tall in front of a crowd of girls all different from the other, his mouth opened and Lily hoped she was not too late.

"I prince James of Godric's Hollow," he said. "Hereby choose–"

"Don't!" Lily shouted without really meaning to. James turned his head, shock displayed all across his features. "Don't marry them. They don't– I will– You are the most... Insensitive, pompous, arrogant and handsome fool I've ever met."

Faces and murmurs clearly didn't agree with that, but the corner of James's mouth quirked up.

"But I love you so please don't marry them," his eyes widened at her confession, and he seemed to think for a second before he cleared his throat.

"As I said," his eyes showing mirth. "I prince James of Godric's Hollow, hereby choose," it was over. Lily was too late. "Princess Lily of Surrey to be my wife."

Her head shot up, unsure of what she heard. Until he came down from the pedestal where he stood and walked towards her with a determination she didn't know was possible in a human being. He embraced her, his hands wrapped around her, his head looming closer until finally their lips met in a soft kiss.

So yes, prince James was someone who princess Lily always thought of as arrogant, pompous. But damn it, he did get what he wanted in the end.

Romione (Bar/Restaurant – Teacher AU) (WARNING: This one gets a bit spicy):

Ron sat down at the bar counter asking Rosmerta for his usual, Rum with Coke. He had finished preparing his latest lecture for his Literature Class at Hogwarts University. It had taken him almost an eternity to finish it in time, as he went to take a drink he heard a familiar voice behind him.

“Professor Weasley?” he’d recognized it anywhere. He turned around seeing Hermione Granger, the top students in all of Hogwarts perhaps. She was one his students, and the most challenging as well. Every class was filled with bickering between the two as they discussed a new novel or talked about a problematic author.

Recently he had started seeing her in a new light. As an educator he was ashamed of these thoughts, after all he was nearly ten years her senior. Well, he was barely seven years older than her, but that was still pretty bad. He had managed to become a professor thanks to the Headmaster, an old family friend.

“Ms. Granger,” he said. “What are you doing here? Isn’t it past your bed time?” She rolled her eyes, but she still smiled at his joke.

“Well, actually, my dorm mate Lavender said that I could use a break from all the studying. I don’t normally go out as much since–” she cut herself short as a sad look came across her eyes.

Ron didn’t need to finish. He had heard the gossiping around campus. How Hermione Granger had managed to score legendary football player Viktor Krum before leaving for college just for him to break up with her a few months later. He had actually heard of Krum, he was as old as him and Ron held a big admiration towards the famous athlete, before that admiration turned to disdain.

How could someone ever even think about breaking up with Hermione Granger? Sure, she could be nagging and bossy. But she was also kind, and brave. She wasn’t afraid of speaking her mind. And the fact that she was beautiful didn’t went over his head. She had this wild hair that always seemed untamable and Ron often found himself laying in bed as he pictured his fingers tangled in her mane while her mouth worked him until completion. He shook his head. He couldn’t think of that right now, and in front of her nonetheless.

“Well,” he said taking another sip of his drink. “I hope you have fun, Ms. Granger.”

“You too, Professor.”

The night went by and Ron couldn’t stop occasionally staring at her from the bar counter. In her table there were four other girls: a blonde girl who he had to guess was Lavender from the way Hermione kept calling her to get off the table; two identical brown girls, who Ron guessed were twins, one seemed as excited as Lavender and the other reminded him more of Hermione; and another blonde girl who had the widest eyes he had ever seen along with a dreamy look.

As the evening went by many of the girls started heading back to their dorms and homes. Lavender went back with an Irish boy from Ron’s class named Seamus, the identical sisters were helping Luna who had fell from the table trying to dance in a strange way. Leaving Hermione alone in the table, Ron noticed she had barely had anything to drink. He took a last sip from his drink and left some money.

He went out the bar and walked in the direction of his home. He decided that he was too tired to walk and went to take out his phone just to find that he left it at the bar. Groaning he returned back finding a couple apparently snogging by the doorway. Ron muttered something about kids these days until he recognized the wild mane of curls and something that was definitely not good.

“Cormac!” Hermione’s voice yelled. “I said get off!”

“Shut up!” replied Cormac McLaggen. He was part of the rugby team. “You’ve been teasing me all night with that dress. And I think it’s time I have a little fu–”

Cormac’s threat was cut short as a fist flew to the side his jaw. Cormac slumped to the ground. Hermione looked scared and turned towards Ron, as the fear in her expression left just to be replaced with a crying relief. She wrapped her arms tightly against Ron. He patted her back as she cried and thanked him.

“Are you alright?” he asked. Her head moved up and down against his chest. “I forgot my phone. I’ll go get it and then I’ll call you a taxi, alright?” She nodded again.

He went back inside the bar, took his phone and warned Rosemerta about McLaggen before going back out and calling a taxi for Hermione. When the taxi arrived he was faced with a request from her.

“C-can you ride back with me?” Ron didn’t hesitate and nodded.

NSFW Content ahead

The ride to her home was quiet. When they reached the door to her dorm, something sparked between the two fo them. Hermione pulled the collar of Ron’s shirt and brought his lips to her own. Ron knew this was wrong, yet he didn’t do anything to stop it. They were a passionate mess of kisses, licks and bites between the two.

"Are you sure?" He asked.

"Are you asking me if I'm drunk?" She asked him, her eyes half-lidded as they gazed at his lips.

"I'm asking you if you want to shag me as much as I want to ravage you?"

"And I'm saying I really want to ravage you as well, professor."

He undressed her with the most delicate of touches he had ever shown to another human being. She wasn’t just a hook up. Not to him at least.

When they were both nearly naked, Ron only having his underwear left, Ron put her down on the bed. He laid soft kisses from her ankle, to the back of her knee, to her inner thigh until his tongue was tasting her folds, the sweet nectar of her arousal touched his tongue and he thought his cock would actually burst. She writhed in pleasure under him, she was like the prey that he had wanted to tear apart for so long.

With a long moan that went to his ears and then to his cock she came. He kissed up her body, dipping his tongue inside her belly button and circling her nipples when he got to her chest before he reached her face. She was so bloody beautiful, and he didn’t know if he could hold on for any longer.

She turned them over kissing his jaw and neck. As she kissed him down his body before reaching the front of his trousers where a very prominent bulge took a hold of her attention. She kissed it through the cloth making him throw his head back. She pulled down his underwear revealing his large and thick manhood. She looked unsure of herself, and Ron was about to tell her she didn’t have to when she closed her mouth around him.

She was unexperienced that much was obvious her licking and sucking was very tentative, like she was afraid of doing something wrong. His hand unconsciously sought out her hair, as his fingers tangled with her hair. She didn’t seem to object as one of his fantasies seemed to play out in front of him. It took him Hermione kissing the tip of his cock before he came spurt after spurt in her mouth. He tried apologizing, but was left speechless when he saw her swallowing his ejaculation.

When he entered her he was careful, he realized this was her first time in a long time from how tight she was. He took his time to pleasure every part of her, playing special attention to her clit, nipples, neck and everything that he saw was making her approach her climax.

They came together with a powerful moan that mixed their two voices. She laid on top of him as she seemed to count the freckles on his chest.

“I’ve been wanting that for months now,” she said.

“Me too,” he admitted, running his fingers through her hair.

"So."

"So?"

"What does this mean?"

Ron took a few seconds, staring at her brown eyes, his heart spoke before his head had properly giving it a thought.

"I think that was one of the best nights I've had in a long time," he said. "And I'd love to take you out on a date, Ms. Granger." She smiled a bright and wide smile.

"It's Hermione, and I'd love to, professor."

"It's Ron, and I can't wait for it, Hermione."

I agree with almost everything except the part about Draco. Just because he didn't someone himself, doesn't mean he doesn't hold the same beliefs. If you can persecute Snape for calling Lily a mudblood at 15, then you can’t lower your standards for other people. Draco used the same word since the Chamber of Secrets. He threatened other students based on blood since he was twelve. He gave Harry death threats on the Hogwarts Express, in first year. He gloated about about a whole group of students being hunt down and petrified, to their faces. He bullied, attacked and harassed students based on blood for years. He was blatantly disrespectful to teachers that didn’t meet his purity standards. When do you draw the line about when Lucius’ influence start and Draco’s character begins? Not having the stomach for murder doesn’t make him any less than of a racist, bullying bigot. He’s willing to poison and curse but can’t face his victims? That doesn’t excuse his behavior.

gliderofgold replied to your post: My kingdom for people to remember that Snape never…

HE!!! WOULD!!! STILL!!! BE!!! A!!!! NAZI!!! IF!!! NEVILLE!!! WAS!!! THE!!! CHOSEN!!! ONE!!! my inner hannah will never let this go okay i’m mad

that’s the fucking thing tho he never really stopped?? he just stopped allying himself with a very specific group of people. his issue wasn’t with the rhetoric or the ideology, it was with the people, and he never stopped mistreating muggleborns! so like ! he was a blood supremacist thru and thru and before anyone tries to get up my ass because “but so was draco”: draco was a teenage boy parroting his father’s beliefs who acted as an agent of genocide only when forced and who eventually refused to act and to take a life, not because he was particularly invested in that specific life, but because it was the right thing to do.

"What's this?" Lily asked aloud, picking up the folded piece of parchment from the floor. It was blank on both sides. She tried prodding it with her wand, but nothing happened.

"Specialis Revelio!" she whipered.

Again, nothing happened.

Frustrated, Lily tried speaking to it instead. "My name is Lily Evans."

At once, jet black writing began spreading across the map. Lily squinted to try and make out the words.

Mr. Moony would like to ask Lily if she could put the map down now before things get crazy.

Mr. Padfoot would like to tell Lily not to put the map down because he's quite looking forward to Mr. Prongs pooping his pants.

Mr. Moony would like to tell Mr. Padfoot to be quiet.

Mr. Wormtail would like to tell Lily that her hair looks nice today and would also like to ask if Mr. Prongs is doing okay.

Mr. Prongs is not doing okay.

Mr. Padfoot would like to ask Lily if she could find this piece of parchment more often.

Mr. Prongs would like to say that Mr. Padfoot is an arse and would also like to ask Lily if she has ever had feelings for a lad named James Potter.

Mr. Mooony would like to slam his head against the wall.

What is going on? Lily wondered as more writing appeared on the surface of the map.

Mr. Wormtail still thinks that Lily should put this parchment down and walk away.

Mr. Prongs does not want Lily to put this down as he's still waiting for an answer about that whole James Potter thing.

Mr. Padfoot is having the time of his life.

Mr. Padfoot would also like to add that this James fellow seems like an awful human being that smells like dung. Or, at least, that's Mr. Padfoot's impression.

Mr. Prongs would like to tell Mr. Padfoot to SHUT UP.

Mr. Moony apologizes to Lily.

Mr. Prongs would like to say that James Potter is in fact a wonderful bloke and Mr. Prongs has heard that James would make a wonderful boyfriend.

Mr. Padfoot thinks Mr. Prongs is good at being subtle.

Mr. Prongs thinks Mr. Padfoot should go shove his head up his abnormally large arse.

Wolfstar FanFic Coming Soon

Hello everyone!

My name is MG Soto, and I’ve been writing a very long Wolfstar fan fiction for about five years - it’s mostly detailing and outlining, so I still have to do the actual writing. It all really started shortly after reading PoA and I just honestly fell in love with the very few details we were given of the Marauders’ lives.

I don’t, in any way, support JKRoach - but I am a strong believer that one can separate the art from the artist.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in reading it. It’ll be from 1971-1981; so basically, I’ll be taking everyone on a special journey throughout their years at Hogwarts and the few years before the end. I have a couple of twists up on my sleeve, which I’m very excited about.

Under the cut are some important headcanons I’ll be using throughout the story:

Remus Lupin

1. Remus is an avid reader but not the best student when it came to academics - this comes from the tendency to procrastinate a lot as well as always being out with friends causing mayhem, as you do.

2. Remus has issues with his father, because I just really don’t think Lyall Lupin is just going to forget his strong hatred/ignorance towards werewolves just because his son is one. I think there is so much more we can unpack in their relationship.

Sirius Black

1. Sirius was not automatically okay with being a Gryffindor despite his entire family being Slytherins; it takes him at least a year to warm up to his roommates and the other House-mates.

2. Sirius is the one that keeps his part of the room neat, has pretty handwriting, turns in most of the work on time and checks his friends’ work for grammar errors. You can’t grow up in a household where your parents are constantly drilling their expectations in your head and then leave it all behind overnight.

James Potter

1. James is a POC, Indian, to be specific. His parents are immigrants who had done everything they could in order to get a better life, they try to teach James as much as possible about his culture and language, so that he never forgets.

2. James is the one that makes sure his friends have completed all of their schoolwork before they can even think about having fun. He’s not about to let them fall behind just because they weren’t responsible.

Peter Pettigrew

1. Peter is an actual member of the Marauders. He has his positive and negative traits just like every other character. He falls in love, has his hobbies, and his own friends that are not James, Remus, and Sirius. He’s a person.

2. Peter has a younger sister, which he would do any and everything for. He’s very protective of her, and is willing to do just about anything to keep her safe.

Lily Evans

1. Lily will be an accurately represented plus-sized character. She’ll have her confidence, but also her insecurities like every other skinny or fat girl. Being fat will not be her only character trait, but it’ll be brought up enough to show what it means to be anything but skinny in this society.

2. She’s not going to be a complete stuck-up. I’ve always hated it so much when they showed her like that, honestly, and so I decided that she can be fun and funny too.

Marlene McKinnon

1. She’s a transgender woman. She’s incredibly badass, but also sensitive. She’s my baby, I’ve worked so hard on her (the amount of trans women who’ve helped me is ridiculous, I love them all).

2. She was the Marauders’ fifth roommate, and she is also Sirius’ platonic soulmate. Their friendship’s so pure.

Other Characters You’ll Meet...

1. Mary MacDonald

2. Dorcas Meadowes

3. Severus Snape (not a main character, but an important one)

4. Three (3) OCs

That is all that comes to mind! I’ll be posting the story on AO3 and on Wattpad once I’m done. I’ll be using this account to update everyone on the process (It’s mostly done, but I’m hoping that you guys will help me push through so that I can finish it). Let me know if there are any questions, suggestions, or comments!

To the moon and the stars,

MG Soto

Your values usually mirror the values of your closest loved ones. And neither James, Severus or Petunia were particularly kind so the idea of her being this saintly role model doesn't fit the picture.

Hi I have read many of your James posts and so far I agree with all of them. What gets me wondering however is someone like Lily Evans - potrayed as the saintly morally good character - dating someone like James - an entitled bully who kept his jerkish behavior even after he supposedly changed. Who do you think she was? Did she excused James's behavior because she found him attractive and thought she could change him? Or that he would change for her? Was she downplaying his faults because she fell in love? Or was she simply too naive? I cannot believe a person who would marry a person with so many faults like James wouldn't also be far off from being jerkish themselves. And what about her relationship with Severus? Was she as attached to him as he was? Why was she friends with him for so long if she was excusing his prejudice for years? I'm so conflicted about her. The author implies she is something but the text kind of goes against that. As someone who is pro snape and knows Lily was a big part of his life what do you think about her, her motives, actions or relationships? I love your opinions a lot btw never stop sharing them😄

I looove to talk about Lily because her character sucks. And not because of her, but because HOW Rowling portrays her. Sooo.. Lets go! Lily is emblematic of a significant issue in the series: the tendency to use female characters as tools for male development rather than as complex individuals with their own arcs. In Lily’s case, her character functions primarily as a moral barometer—she exists to reflect the “goodness” or “badness” of the men around her. Her choices and relationships with James and Severus are less about her own desires, values, or growth and more about how they impact these two men. This framing does Lily a disservice, stripping her of agency and interiority while simultaneously burdening her with the narrative role of deciding who is worthy and who is not

Rowling’s portrayal of Lily is heavily idealized. She is the perfect mother who sacrifices herself for her son, the brilliant and talented witch who stands out even among her peers, and the moral compass who chooses “good” (James) over “evil” (Severus). This construction paints her as infallible, a paragon of virtue, and the embodiment of love and selflessness. However, this saintly image is rarely interrogated within the text.

The problem lies in the dissonance between how Lily is presented and the decisions she makes. If she is meant to represent moral perfection, her marriage to James —a character whose flaws remain evident even after his supposed redemption—creates a contradiction. James, even as an adult, retains the arrogance and hostility that defined his youth, particularly in his continued disdain for Snape. If Lily was as discerning and principled as the narrative suggests, why would she align herself with someone whose values and behavior contradict the ideal of Gryffindor bravery and fairness?

This contradiction weakens her role as a moral arbiter, making her decisions feel less like the result of her own judgment and more like a narrative convenience to validate James’s redemption. By choosing James, she implicitly forgives or overlooks his past bullying, signaling that his actions were excusable or irrelevant to his worthiness as a partner. This not only diminishes the impact of James’s flaws but also undermines Lily’s supposed moral clarity.

Lily’s role mirrors a common, harmful trope: the woman as a moral compass or fixer for flawed men. Her purpose becomes external rather than internal—she isn’t there to pursue her own goals, ideals, or struggles but to serve as a benchmark for others’ morality. It’s as if Lily’s worth as a character is determined solely by her relationships with James and Severus rather than her own journey.

By failing to give Lily meaningful contradictions or flaws, Rowling inadvertently creates a character who feels passive and complicit. Her saintly veneer prevents her from being truly human, as real people are defined by their contradictions, growth, and mistakes. Yet Lily is static, existing only to highlight James’s "redemption" or Severus’s "fall."

This lack of depth reflects a broader issue with how women are often written in male-centric narratives: their stories are secondary, their personalities flattened, and their actions only meaningful in the context of the men they influence. It’s a stark reminder of the gender bias present in the series, where women like Lily, Narcissa, and even Hermione are often used to drive or validate male characters’ arcs rather than having their own fully developed trajectories.

Regarding Lily and Severus relationship, their bond begins in a world where both feel alienated. Severus, growing up in the oppressive and neglectful environment of Spinner’s End, finds in Lily not only a companion but a source of light and warmth that he lacks at home. For Lily, Severus is her first glimpse into the magical world, a realm that she belongs to but doesn’t yet understand. Their friendship is symbiotic in its earliest stages: Severus offers Lily knowledge of her magical identity, while she provides him with acceptance and validation. However, this connection, while powerful in childhood, rests on a fragile foundation—one that fails to evolve as their circumstances and priorities shift. When they arrive at Hogwarts, the cracks in their bond begin to surface. While Lily flourishes socially, Severus becomes increasingly marginalized and becomes a frequent target of James Potter and Sirius Black. This social isolation only deepens his reliance on Lily, but for her, this dependency becomes increasingly difficult to sustain.

It’s important to recognize that Lily’s discomfort isn’t only moral; it’s also social. By the time of their falling out, Lily has fully integrated into the Gryffindor social circle, gaining the admiration of her peers and, most notably, James Potter. Her association with Severus, now firmly positioned as an outsider and a future Death Eater, risks undermining her own social standing. While her final break with Severus is framed as a principled decision, it’s difficult to ignore the role that social dynamics might have played in her choice.

It’s worth considering that Lily’s shift toward James wasn’t necessarily a sudden change of heart but rather the culmination of an attraction that may have existed all along, one rooted in what he represented rather than who he was. James Potter, as the embodiment of magical privilege—a pure-blood, wealthy, socially adored Gryffindor golden boy—offered Lily something that Severus never could: validation within the magical world’s elite.

Though Lily was undoubtedly principled, it’s plausible that, beneath her moral convictions, there was a more human, and yes, superficial, desire for recognition and security in a world that was, for her, both wondrous and alien. Coming from a working-class, Muggle-born background, Lily would have been acutely aware of her outsider status, no matter how talented or well-liked she became. James’s relentless pursuit of her, despite his arrogance and bullying tendencies, may have been flattering in ways that bolstered her sense of belonging. James’s attention wasn’t just personal—it was symbolic. His interest in her, as someone who could have easily chosen a pure-blood witch from his own social echelon, signaled to her and to others that she was not only worthy of respect but desirable within the upper echelons of wizarding society.

This dynamic raises uncomfortable questions about Lily’s character. Could it be that she tolerated James’s antics, not because she believed he would change for her, but because she enjoyed the social validation his affection brought her? Interestingly, this interpretation aligns Lily more closely with her sister Petunia than one might initially expect. Petunia’s marriage to Vernon provided her with the stability and status she craved within the Muggle world. Both sisters may have sought partners who could anchor them in environments where they otherwise felt insecure. For Petunia, that meant latching onto the image of suburban perfection through Vernon. For Lily, it may have meant aligning herself with someone like James, whose wealth, status, and pure-blood background offered her a kind of social and cultural security in the magical world.

If we view Lily’s relationship with James through this lens, her character becomes far less idealized and far more human. Rather than being the moral paragon the series portrays, she emerges as a young woman navigating an uncertain world, making choices that are as practical as they are principled. While it’s clear she disapproved of James’s bullying, it’s equally possible that his persistence, confidence, and status were qualities she found increasingly difficult to resist—not because they aligned with her values, but because they appealed to her insecurities.

It’s also worth noting that Lily’s final break with Severus coincided with her growing relationship with James. This timing is telling. Severus, a social outcast from a poor background, represented the antithesis of James. By cutting ties with Severus, Lily not only distanced herself from the moral ambiguities of his choices but also from the social liabilities he represented. Aligning with James, by contrast, placed her firmly within the Gryffindor elite—a position that would have offered her both social protection and personal validation. And this whole perspective is much more interesting than her image as a moral compass for the men around her. Unfortunately, as with many of her characters, Rowling didn’t put any effort into giving us definitive answers; she just insisted on that unhealthy, idealized view of motherhood and the idea that everything is forgiven if you're on the "right" side and rich and popular.

Sorry for the long text, but whenever the topic of Lily comes up, I tend to go on and on, haha.
