Some Positive Brush Pen Lettering!
Some Positive Brush Pen Lettering!

Some positive brush pen lettering!

ID under the cut:

[ID: two pictures of calligraphy in a fun, bouncy font. The first reads “sunshine” in bright yellow lettering with a thin black outline. The word is all lowercase, and the dot over the i is a small sun. A yellow Faber-Castell marker is positioned under the words.

The second picture is of calligraphy in a similar style, this one in light blue ink and reading “have hope”. Accents have been added in much darker turquoise ink, down the left hand side of each letter, and the words are surrounded by small paisley-shaped doodles. END ID]

For The Past Couple Of Months, I’ve Been Madly Preparing For May Day In Baltimore With An Event In

For the past couple of months, I’ve been madly preparing for May Day in Baltimore with an event in celebration of Robin Hardy’s The Wickerman. My friend Melissa LaMartina and I organized the event complete with bands playing songs from the soundtrack, burlesque performances, an actual maypole with an actual maypole dance (thank you Chuck and Chelsea!), a humongous wickerman photobooth (seen above, featuring me in my Summerisle lady garb and our very own Lord Summerisle himself), and an art show featuring gorgeous work from artists Monica Amneus, Alan Brown, Michael Bukowski, Zé Burnay, Shirley Chan, Jeanne D'Angelo, Alex Fine, Mandi Johnson, Justine Jones, Cailin Marie, Janna Morton, Becca Stadtlander, Maureen Sullivan, and Jabari Weathers. Jimmy Giegerich also designed a shirt from Pizza Party Printing specially for the event (and you can get that shirt here). I designed and illustrated the poster, a 2-color limited-edition screen print, which you can get here for $15.

Everything about Sunday was a blast and I couldn’t be more proud of how it turned out or more thrilled by all the hard work and response by everybody involved.

And now, come. It’s time to keep your appointment with the wickerman.

"Suzy, Do You Know Anything About...witches?"

"Suzy, do you know anything about...witches?"

Suspiria, a masterpiece by Dario Argento. This trippy, amazingly surreal horror film is the subject of my newest tshirt design for Pizza Party Printing's upcoming movie night at the Ottobar. They'll be showing not only Suspiria, but the 1989 horror, The Church (paired with a fucking metal shirt by Jimmy Giegerich), so if you're in Baltimore at the end of the month, be there! Immerse yourself in blood and beer (and the music of the one, the only Goblin). It's gonna be spooky.

The Suspiria shirt is up for sale now at Pizza Party! Pick one up while you can!

I Had The Opportunity To Work With Meg Mateo Ilasco At Anthology Magazine Recently For Their 2013 Winter

I had the opportunity to work with Meg Mateo Ilasco at Anthology Magazine recently for their 2013 Winter and Spring issues. Here's my illustration for their seasonal Screen Play article and a map (which I rarely get the chance to do!) for their feature on Oakland. These were both uniquely-proportioned layouts and so this was a fun exercise. Anthology is a beautifully designed and curated magazine, so if you haven't already, definitely check it out!

EDIT: I'd credited Anh-Minh Le as my art director initially, whereas Anh-Minh is the editor of Anthology. My mistake!

"I'll Shove That Bat Up Your Ass And Turn You Into A Popsicle."

"I'll shove that bat up your ass and turn you into a popsicle."

The Warriors. is. my. favorite. movie. of. all. time.

This is my tshirt design for another Pizza Party Printing movie night at the Ottobar here in Baltimore. On Sunday, April 28th, they'll be presenting the best movie of all time, The Warriors, along with another best movie of all time, The Road Warrior so you'd best soldier over to this one. Admission (and pizza) is free as always, and BASEBALL TEES of my design as well as regular tees of Jimmy Giegerich's utterly rad Road Warrior shirt will be on sale. SO...

Come out to playy-ayyy!

Fantastic Tales II From Scout Books' Good Ink: American Shorts Series Just Came Out, And It Features

Fantastic Tales II from Scout Books' Good Ink: American Shorts series just came out, and it features the short story I illustrated last year, "The Isle of Voices" by Robert Louis Stevenson. Other mini books in the set are "The Giant's Heart" by George MacDonald, illustrated by Lark Pien; and "Mowgli's Brothers" by Rudyard Kipling, illustrated by Rebecca Dart. This was a lot of fun to work on, and I loved the story I got assigned. Thanks to editor François Vigneault for including me in the series!

You can pick up the Fantastic Tales II set for $12 and check out all the other Good Ink: American Shorts sets from Scout Books here. All are illustrated beautifully by many talented artists and come in nicely-packaged mini-book form. They're all great little classics that are definitely worth revisiting.

Some Months Ago I Illustrated And Hand-lettered Materials At Spur Design For The Maryland Humanities

Some months ago I illustrated and hand-lettered materials at Spur Design for the Maryland Humanities Council's One Maryland One Book program. Every year a book is chosen for state-wide reading and discussion, with materials distributed to schools and libraries, and the 2012 selection was The Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway. It's a story based on true events about a musician during the seige of Sarajevo who honors the memory of his friends and neighbors by playing his cello everyday in the square where they were killed, a day for each victim.

It was a thrill to work on this at Spur, and lovely to work with the hardworking people at MD Humanities. You can find out more about the One Maryland One Book program here. Art & design direction by David Plunkert and Joyce Hesselberth.

Cthulhu Fhtagn!

Cthulhu Fhtagn!

For Trevor Henderson's upcoming grim and dreadful H.P. Lovecraft zine "Puffed Shoggoths", which has incredible line up of artists including Trevor himself, Jimmy Giegerich and Jon Vermilyea. You can find out more about the zine here.

With Halloween on it's way, I figure I'll tie this little story into the piece: this illustration is based on an intense fear I experienced on the one and only cruise I'll ever take in my life. I was on the deck one night, in the middle of the Atlantic; it was cloudy and a new moon so no light whatsoever came from the sky. I remember looking out past the railings and seeing the lights from the boat just end only a few feet out at the most charcoal-deep blackness I've ever seen. It was such a profoundly dark and completely unbroken void that it just seemed to swallow everything. As if the ship had sailed into a black hole, there was just nothing in every direction. I remember finding my back to the wall of the ship before I even knew I'd moved and just filling up with the most instinctual fear and dread. There could have been a colossal eye staring at me in the dark and I wouldn't have been any more disturbed than I was in that moment.

"When you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you," apparently...according to some guy...

So in true Lovecraftian style, I let the dread take over and this is the result! Stay tuned to Trevor's tumblr for news on the "Puffed Shoggoths" zine.

ink on dead magnolia leaves. is this “anthropomorphic fallacy”? uhh, too much time down here.

My lovely friend Kelly Lasserre's handwritten type is so good and so enviable!  There's something really sweet and silly about this that I adore, and all the painted objects she's been creating just make me so happy.
