Esther Scroll, Ancona, early 18th century

This scroll is a beautiful example of the particular style of decoration that flourished in the Italian towns of Ancona and Lugo in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Artists in these towns specialized in a laborious technique whereby the parchment was cut away to create an intricately patterned frame for the text that reminds us of the beautiful lace used in fashions of that period. This elaborate technique was employed to adorn megillot, ketubbot and a variety of Judaica objects. Only a few such Italian cut-out parchment scrolls remain today.

A silk textile curtain sewed into this 13th-century bible to protect the delicate gold leaf illumination of the Stoning of Jeremiah.

This beautiful edition of Byron’s The Prisoner of Chillon was published in 1865 and illuminated by William and George Audsley, a pair of Scottish architects.   Each page features a full medieval-style chromolithograph complete with shining silver and gold accents. The Audsley brothers were especially known for their Gothic Revival style, so I suppose it’s only natural that they would produce such intricate, vivid borders.

Esther scrolls in elaborate cases, recounting the Purim story of the salvation of the Jews in the Persian Empire, were often given as betrothal gifts and passed on from one generation to the next as veritable family heirlooms. This scroll from Kolkata invokes the biblical blessing of Joseph to protect the groom, Ezra Somekh.

Zhongshuge Bookstores

Shanghai-based architecture firm X+Living has designed Zhongshuge bookstores. Each location in this chain of Chinese bookstores has uniquely designed spaces with reflective elements that immerse guests in parallel environments. In the Chongqing branch, criss-crossing staircases and a mirrored ceiling double the room for an effect that seems straight out of an M.C. Escher woodcut.

France-based photographer Thibaud Poirier has been traveling the world and documenting modern churches as he goes. He’s captured the interiors of 29 modern churches across Germany, The Netherlands, France, Denmark, and Japan to see how each city has designed structures of worship within the last century.
