This exact issue came up in a serious business meeting at a corporate database job I used to have, to the eventual horror of everyone involved.
Took me a while to figure out why my coworker, who jumped to demonstrate on the laptop running the powerpoint, turned beet red and avoided everyone for weeks. Once it clicked I have never been so glad to have been half asleep at a boardtable. Thanks to my being too tired, I was slow on the uptake to volunteer when the bosses asked for an example of this supposedly superior AO3 search feature.
As a result, *I* was not the one who showed poorly punctuated porn to the entire department.
The problem with AO3 is that every online store's search function is bullshit by comparison
This great news about a great fic! Making art more download friendly is a boon to those who, like me, hoard fanworks like a dragon hoards gems.
Turnabout Dishwasher news (it's not really news, but whatever)
not that this will affect too many people, but I found a way to PDF my text box fics without the PDFs looking like garbage and removing formatting. It sort of works on mobile, but generally this is for people who need to download my fics and read them outside of AO3. And if AO3 or my image hosting site ever goes down, this would be the best way to read it.
I'm going to be making a neocities landing page for all my fic PDFs in the near future, so stay tuned for that. In the meantime, I will be re-linking and updating this link on AO3.

Maison troglodytique de Laveissière
(Cantal, Auvergne, France)
C’est la curiosité de la commune de Laveissière, dans le Cantal, non loin du Lioran. Située au centre du bourg, la maison de la roche, comme tout le monde la surnomme, a été construite vers 1850. Sa particularité : un énorme rocher surplombe le toit. Il présentait une cavité et deux frères dont l’un était maçon ont eu l’idée d’y accoler une maison.
René Penel Colin est l’actuel propriétaire de la maison de la roche. Il raconte : « On est allés aux archives à Aurillac. En 1831, la maison n’est pas sur les registres. Mais elle apparaît en 1870. On pense qu’elle date de 1850 environ. Elle a été construite par un ouvrier des fours à chaux dont le frère avait une ferme à côté. Je pense qu’ils avaient construit la maison par économie, car cela économisait la moitié de la maison en mur et en toit. Il y a un surplomb par le rocher. La maison s’appuie sur ce surplomb.
Il poursuit : « Cette maison est unique à cause de son chapeau. Elle est appuyée sur le rocher qui dépasse énormément. Le rocher est une brèche horizontale, c’est un terme volcanique. C’est une coulée de lave qui a emporté des éléments, qui s’est agglomérée, et qui a été érodée par l’eau et les glaciers. Il reste ce chapeau...
Nombreux sont les cars qui s’arrêtent pendant la saison touristique afin de permettre aux curieux de ramener un cliché de la maison de la roche. René Penel Colin indique en souriant « Il y a beaucoup de gens qui viennent pour prendre la maison en photo. L’été, il y a des cars de visiteurs qui s’arrêtent. Elle n’est pas visitable. Les gens se demandent si le rocher est venu après ».
En effet, on pourrait croire, telle la crainte des Gaulois d’Astérix, que le ciel est vraiment tombé sur la tête de cette maison, ou plutôt un menhir.
Nota : On parle d’un habitat troglodytique ou d’une maison troglodytique, tandis que le terme « troglodyte » désigne l’habitant de ladite maison.

Many coaches stop off during the tourist season to give curious visitors the chance to take home a picture of the house in the rock. René Penel Colin says with a smile, "A lot of people come to take photos of the house. In summer, there are busloads of visitors. It's not open to visitors. People wonder if the rock came afterwards".
Indeed, one might think, like the Gauls in Asterix, that the sky really did fall on the head of this house, or rather a menhir.

Ao3 is actually massively culturally important and very very good at being what it is. I’m so serious when I say that ao3 needs to be protected as the anti censorship, by fans for fans, nonprofit, volunteer run, expertly designed archival site that it is. You don’t have to read or like fanfiction to understand that on principle, ao3 is a site that should be defended.
I’m noticing an increase in new fic writers on AO3 who…uh…mayy not know how to format their fics correctly..so here is a quick and VERY important tip
Using a random fic of mine as example..

Idk how many times I’ve read a good fic summary and been so excited to read before clicking on it and being met with an ugly wall of text. When I see a huge text brick with zero full line breaks my eyes blur and I just siiiigh bc either I click out immediately or I grin and bear it…it’s insufferable!
If a new character speaks, you need a line break. If you notice a paragraph is becoming too large, go ahead and make a line break and/or maybe reconfigure the paragraph to flow better. I’m not a pro writer or even a huge fic writer but…please…ty…
For those of you who want to lock all of your works with all the silly AI scraping of AO3 (which AO3 is recommending you lock your works, as stated in this post)
Here is a quick and easy guide of how to edit ALL of your works at once.
From your Dashboard click on “edit works” on the far right. This will bring up all of your works that you can select.
Select all the works you want to edit, then hit “Edit” at the bottom right.
Scroll to nearly the bottom of the page where you find “Visibility” and select “only show to registered users” and then update at the bottom.
That’s it, all of your works have now been locked without having to go in and edit each fic individually.

tldr: the Internet Archive/WayBack Machine is super important in term of archived content, billions of stuff are on there, and with the current event happening in the world like stated above,without this tool, it will be hard to properly document what took place. It will be easy for certain people to rewrite history. Dont let them.

I’d like to point out that for the AO3 ship stats, Drarry is 6th in number of new works.
Can we talk about how amazing it is that even though Harry Potter is older that the fandom is still so active? There are also a bunch of other HP ships in the top 100.
I need to finish writing my fanfictions so that I can forget about it and then reread it and be surprised by whatever it is that I wrote.
One thing no one ever talks about in fandom is the pain of finding out one of your favorite ao3 authors is a total jerk. Writing a fic inspired by theirs while linking and giving credit, only for them to leave a comment insulting you and calling you weird for making a fic of their fic. Using the names they gave to unnamed canon characters (a common practice called fandom name sharing) and linking and giving credit, only for them to leave a comment calling you a plagiarist for stealing the names and threatening to send their fans after you. Finding out they have a history of doing stuff like this, and finding it practically impossible to separate your enjoyment of their work from your incredibly negative experiences with the author. Trying your best to avoid their fics as a result even though they wrote at least half of the fics of your favorite ship. True pain. Never meet your heroes kids.
I have news for you. You can do this more than once by reading it incognito and signed out as a guest.

Have you updated your permissions recently? If so, now is the time! Why? Permission statements are SUPER HELPFUL for other creators who want to engage with your work! Podficcers, fanartists, translators, etc, may not know if you allow it, and therefore might be hesitant to reach out or share their work with you. If you want to encourage transformative works of your own passion projects - or inversely, set some boundaries - then Permission statements are AMAZING!
TYPES OF PERMISSION STATEMENTS:
BP/Blanket Permission: Remixes, podfics, fan art, etc- it’s all good to go! Have fun!
Limited Permission: Some works are up for transformative works, others aren’t!
Ask First: Creators should ask first
Putting this on your Tumblr or in your AO3 bio can go a LONG way, and help spread the practise! If you want to share your own, reblog this with your own statement - and maybe I’ll gift you something, if you do allow it!

If something upsets you, makes you angry or queasy or triggers you, stop reading/looking at it. Avoid things that might make you feel that way.
Learn to use the Sort and Filter function on AO3, especially the Exclude tools.
On social media, block and mute accounts / tags / words when necessary.
If you hated something, you don’t need to tell that to the creator or start pointing fingers at them publicly.
The Back button is free. Use it.

Yes, for this to work, creators need to tag their works accordingly, so that people know what sort of content they are about to engage with and can nope out if necessary.
I will probably make another PSA about the importance of proper tagging later.
