Gaze mini comic

Got into a small discussion about humans in wof today and got inspired. I just cant imagine being a human during the war of the sandwing succession and seeing a bunch of giant dragons battling it out

Small warning for implied death, no gore is shown tho

A wings of fire book from a humans pov would be cool only if it was horror themed and set during some dragon war. How scary it would be to be surrounded by battling dragons and like humans can understand dragons as much as warrior cats understand dogs (refrencing mainly that spooky scene with brightheart and the "pack pack kill kill")

Anyways I still think dragon stories will always be cooler but still the idea is neat 👀

First flight

Imogen and her father tomb. Tomb had kids before but they went on their own pathes rather quickly so he vowed to spend more time if he was ever given another chance.

tomb met volcano and the two fell in love and had one hatcling. Imogen is their spunky daughter who is in love with the clan. Being the daughter of the heir to the clans leadership she is treated with a lot of respect. she also has the best teachers to feed her hunger for knowledge.

The new seawing in the reef

Sunhunter waited silently in the sand. She hated being so… out in the open. Especially now. She jumped hearing a dragon rise from the water.

"Relax. Just me." Snapping turtle shook off a stray piece of seaweed. His spots gave a faint yellow flash in the moonlight. "If your here just to tell me that I'm in danger I know…" sunhunter frowned at the familiar look the seawing held.

"I'm here to offer you a way out actually." He trudged through the sand as it began to clump on his wet talons. He shook the sand off and opened his talon. Within it was an earring, a shiny pearl carved in the shape of a star. "Oh its beautiful… but how is jewelry supposed to help me?" Sunhunter took it into her talon to further examine.

"Argile made it so he could come with me into the deep palace. He doesn't really come into the ocean these days." He glanced toward the deep blue "it's enchanted. It'll turn you into a seawing as long as you wear it."

Sunhunter felt her scales shiver "Snapping turtle… I can't… all my visions... they come in water I don't want to imagine how awful it would be in the water…" she shook her head. "How do you know? You've never been in the ocean." He leaned forward "Sunhunter you don't really have a lot of options here. The skywings are after you… they can't go into the ocean."

Snapping turtle was right. The mercenaries and assassin's were getting more crafty. Even those against the skywings would give longing glances at her. No doubt gaging whether or not the bounty was worth it. "I..I dont know how to be a seawing.." she frowned "I don't know aquatic or how to swim or or-" "I'll teach you." Snapping turtle flashed a rare smile. "What about the talons? I still want to help the peace effort…" she looked at the earring. "Oh for moons sake forget the talons! This is your life in danger!" He exasperated "Sunhunter… please… I dont want to see you become some trophy for the skywings.." His eyes were weirdly desperate.

Sunhunter sighed and slipped the earring on. A deeply cold chill ran through her scales. She shut her eyes tightly as the world spun, she stumbled forward and met Snapping turtles chest. Past the pounding in her head she could hear him "Its alright… Argile struggled a bit as well…"

Her scales stopped tingling and the pounding headache faded. She felt snapping turtles wing on her back, brushing softly. She also felt her new gills, webbed toes, and flashy spots. She opened her eyes to find her new night vision. Also finding herself needing to look up toward snapping turtle "Oh making me shorter than you is unfair." Snapping turtle snorted "Welcome to being the short and stocky tribe."

Sunhunter stumbled steadying herself. She used to be shoulder heavy but now her weight was all over. She felt stronger despite being shorter. Snapping turtle stared and sunhunter rolled her eyes "I know I look stupid don't I.." "No.. I think you look good as a seawing. I like that the earring chose a mix of more saturated green-ish blue scales. Unique in pattern but not out of place for a seawing." He smirked "but I do miss your original look."

Sunhunters face scales felt faintly like her sandwing warm ones but it went away quickly. She smiled "I have a great hunger for fish now." "Beats those awful roasted tarantulas you used to eat." He stuck his tongue out. "You never tried them so don't start." Sunhunter raised her head, her shiny sea ready scales catching the moonlight. Watching the moons for a moment she turned back to snapping turtle "Well what should my new name be? Sunhunter isn't... seawing... like."

He glanced away "hm.. clam?" "Clam?" Sunhunter retracted "Are you saying I have a big mouth?" She glared. "No! I just- ugh ill get something else…" He rubbed his chin "I'm not good at names…"

Sunhunter sighed before flopping into the sand. A faint dizzy feeling hitting her like a wave "So when does the dizzness stop?"

Snapping turtled perked up as she curled into a C "Cove! Your new name should be cove." He smiled as sunhunter titled her head "Hm... I do like it... but it doesnt mean something dumb does it?"

"No no... A cove is just a small bay often secluded. The waters often have a greenish blue look." He nudged her with a wing "I can show you."

"Ok... but dont let me drown..." She steadied herself and headed toward the water

Snapping turtle chuckled "Of course."

My newest man Boris.

This is boris. Boris is a big boy with a big personality. Boris likes to frolic in the snow and fight bears. Hes a party animal and has the loudest laugh at any gathering. He has been denoted in royal guard 3 times and hes signing up for a 4th.

Tho boris has been demoted 3 times he was almost fired the 3rd time. He was supposed to be at his post but wasnt. But due to his desertion he managed to catch a seawing spy trying to crush the eggs in the royal hatchery.

He saved the future heirs and was spared his job.

⋆Nobel

A very old and frail woman now. Shes lost her sight and is losing her memory as well. She used to be a very muscular icewing even part of the royal advisory. Now she is small and weak. Nobel loves her children a lot and would do anything for him even in her old frail state. Nobel wants to hear from her son Chrsyo and daughter in law floe more as she remembers the wedding. Nobel often mixes up boris with Polar. Boris is close with his mother but at the same time feels so far away.

Father:

⋆Polar

Polar was an ok dad but his world mattered a lot more to him. Polar was part of the royal guard and is what got Boris into it as well. Polar loved Nobel but wasnt quite fond of his kids. He only found pride in boris given boris' strength and spirit. He found Chryso to be cowardly and Polynya to be broken. He interacted with them but his favoritism was noticeable. He was constantly scolded by Nobel about this which strained the relationship. Polar died in battle. Boris was close to his father when growing up but it drifted away when he got older.

Brother:

⋆Chryso (nicknamed Chrysophobia by his father)

Chyrso is a pudgy icewing who is fearful of a lot. He suffers from nightmares and terrors. He cant sleep at night and has large bags under his eyes. Chryso is married to a small hybrid named Floe, floe is a very loving gal who helps with his nightmares. He lives in the village of mammoth. Boris vists him often and they have a pretty close relationship

⋆Polynya

Polynya lost her front arms at birth so she uses her wings instead. She is very strong mentally and physically. She watches over their mother while Boris is away at work. Polynya is a excellent hunter in the air. She is often visited by her friends from school when she was a hatchling. they come bearing gifts. Polynya and boris have a strong relationship.

Floe is Chrysos wife and a talented weaver. Shes an excellent tapestry maker and is a perfectionist when it comes to materials. Floe is easy to talk to and is pretty humorous. Boris enjoys floes company

buttt for fr tips and my own personal process

I often write out my comic like a story that way if its a longer comic I know how things are going to go. If its a shorter story though you can skip this and go into storyboard/plan mode if you feel confident

For example page 11 from a comic im working on with Master Weevil master of evil

Step 1 the story excerpt

"Tecton never stopped his glare, but I was used to it. He never liked my relationship with the villain. Partly about how long it had been going on behind his back. Partly for the PR nightmare it could create.

"I think Prisma should be to one to contact him. She did it last time and I believe a familiar face will be best." He flashed that condescending smirk. "Ok but what's our bribe? Villains will never work for free." Atlas perked up flipping through a tablet's screens. "We don't have a lot of resources… too much is being spent on helping our heros recover. We could try to get the government involv-" "No no. I think Prisma will be able to strike a fine deal with Master weevil… or get a quote I suppose." Tecton chuckled leaning further back in his seat."

Step 2 plotting out the pannels and dialogue

I would say plotting is the most important part as this is where you figure out how the scene is going to look and what text you are going to use to help it. Comics are fun because its easier to show not tell but that doesnt mean you cant accidentally show and not tell enough. Dont be afraid to add little tags to tell locations or times.

Dont get caught up in making these tiny plot pages look good. They dont need to as most likely youll be changing something at somepoint. So dont waste energy on simple planning.

One thing you should pay attention to is numbering pages and making sure any dialogue you write is with the proper page. This is from personal experience as Ill work on a comic for a little, forget, then come back so its best to have things clear.

Step 3 and onward

Sketch your page and place out the dialogue bubble. You may change up some lines or pannels at this stage to better fit in what you need and cut what you dont.

The rest is straight forward! Line, color, shade, etc!

overall your writing process for the comic will vary. Im more on the art side of comics so my writing isnt as detailed as my art ends up showing.

Hope some of my rambling helps and if I can give any final wisdom its to have fun! Comics become hell on earth if you dont have at least a little fun.
