MDZS Vol 2 Annotations, part 1

I finished annotating my copy of MDZS, Volume 2!

First off, I think the translations are perfectly wonderful and I am forever grateful that Seven Seas has given us the ability to share this story with a wider group of friends. With that, I went into Vol 2 trying to pretend that I did not speak Chinese, had little to no knowledge of Chinese culture.

Any time I saw something that didn't flow well to my North American brain or that didn't feel like what I remembered feeling when I read the Chinese version, I made a note. I love this story, and I don't expect my non-Chinese friends to remember the 5+ different things that Lan Xichen is called, or what in the world "shishu" is, so I made a lot of notes. Here they are:

I just finished 魔道祖师 Mo Dao Zu Shi Read #2. I kinda keep expecting fanfare— trumpets or fireworks or at least a dramatic swell of music filling the house! But, alas, it’s just me. Everyone around me assumes it’s just a normal night in.

I read Reader Comments this time (in the kunnu.com version), and I must admit, I really enjoyed them. The last chapters (113, the Official Last Chapter, and 126, the Last Chapter Published) are full of comments commemorating First Read Complete! Second Read Complete! Fifth Read! Nth Read!

So many “Nth Read!” comments. I can’t think of any book I’ve read more than three times, much less so many times that one would lose count. It’s not like putting on your favorite movie while you do your chores - you have to Concentrate and Focus to read!

It’s nice to know that there are people out there who also can’t find their way out of the MDZS rabbit hole, who also love WangXian so much that they re-read and re-read and re-read, who know exactly what’s going to happen but still want to experience it again and again and again.

And there Will be fireworks this weekend, to commemorate “my Second Read-Through 😘”.

It’s obvious in Chinese that Priest just means “his eyes were red with hatred,” but really eloquently.

Yup. Priest fit in a pun/joke related to male-exclusive anatomy, and it’s just really cute.

It’s a cute turn of phrase where Shen Yi is being appropriately humble as a servant of a prince, and Chang Geng is using the exact same phrasing but saying “I’m not a prince.” And it’s all very concise.

There’s this thing called 歇后语 which Pleco translates as “two-part allegorical saying” and is really just yet another type of cultural inside joke. They’re so fun.

This one is 老寿星上吊 — 活得不耐烦了, for those who can read Chinese. (The translation is pretty spot-on, too).

Yet another nice way to talk about death and the dead.

Yah. I had to look that up.

Our Shining Days - Review

This review is for the movie from 2017, not the TV series from 2019. I really enjoyed this. It’s silly (very silly), but it’s fun. If you’re a trained musician maybe close your eyes during those parts but I assume you do that anyway (other than for the guzheng player anyway, since the word is she can actually play). Pros:

Funny! It was properly funny for me

Largely focused on the musical angst rather than romantic angst

GREAT music

Generally enjoyable leads

Cons:

I mean, it is silly, so if you don’t like silly then that’s a con for you

Bad miming of the western classical music esp, if that bothers you (I tend to space out and just listen)

Female lead’s hair slightly bothered me most of the movie (but they didn’t give her a makeover, which I appreciate)

A little over the top in the school western vs Chinese instrument hierarchy, but that IS the point of the movie (the folk music department is literally behind a gate, which I found hilarious).

This was mainly on my watch list, because I figured the music would be good (I love a traditional instrument), and it turned out to be really enjoyable over all. Just a quick, fun watch. Most of the cons aren’t things that bothered me much, but I try to think about what might bother other people.

I just noticed there’s a flute/recorder part in that video and none of them play that… Luckily that stuff doesn’t really bother me if I’m enjoying the media.

WangXian Phoenix Mountain Kiss Censored Panels?

Ok I don't know how official this is...if it's like that "leak" of WangXian's drunk kiss or just a really really good fanart, but these're SUPPOSEDLY the missing panels from WangXian's Phoenix Mountain kiss in chap 185 of the manhua that were chopped due to good old censorship.

It's so weird cuz I just read another danmei manhua that had their kiss intact and they even kinda showed a nonexplicit handjob, so if these are indeed official, I wish they wouldn't be so hard on MDZS.

I’m annotating the Official Translation of MDZS before I lend it out to non-Chinese friends, and as I was reading I realized that the Chapters are different! Paper Book ch 1 = online book ch 1-4!

Which is ok, fine, sure…but that also means that there are no incredibly cute chapter titles to make the relationship between author and reader feel more intimate. I love MXTX as much as I do partially because every few chapter titles felt like it was a charming little inside joke that she wrote just for me (and her other millions of readers).

So my questions now:

do I just Pencil In the Cute Chapter Titles in the paper novel where they would/should appear?

Do they matter as much when it’s so difficult to translate the completely different style that they are written in — cutesy slang — vs. the writing style of the novel — proper “period” XianXia? I mean, of all the LWJ references in the chapter titles, she only writes his actual name Lan Wangji “properly” twice. Twice, in over 100 chapters. I learned how to read slang in Chinese because of these chapter titles! (And the end-chapter notes, and some of the comments :)

What’s the best way to introduce this story to a non-Chinese, non-XianXia, non-BL-reader?!?!?
