The Gryffindor common room was quiet, except for the odd burst of laughter from the groups of people situated around the room. Y/N was sat by the fire, head stuck in a potions textbook. With exams approaching and mountains of homework piling up, stressful thoughts began filling her head. She wished she would have taken Professor McGonagall seriously when she said they should start studying right at the start of the year. Suddenly Y/N slammed her book down on the table in front of her and buried her head in her hands. For the past hour she had been reading and rereading the same chapter over and over. After reading the same thing a dozen times you would think youād remember at least a few main points- but she didnāt, her brain felt like a sponge, everything draining from it as soon as it was took in. Her thoughts drifted from her work to the whereabouts of her best friends who had insisted they would help her study, even though their potions grades were mediocre at best.
Y/N had met the twins in their first year, after she had made the mistake of walking in to one of their pranks. As she jumped with surprise, she almost fell face first down the staircase and if it wasnāt for Fred catching her and pulling her back she probably would have lost most of her teeth. Although she had appreciated being saved, she was mad. What psychos set up a dangerous prank like that near a set of stairs? So she had set out for revenge, and decided sheād prank them back. This turned out as not the best idea as the two boys had heard of every trick in the book, and knew what she was up to. They were impressed though and took her under their wing, and the trio had been inseparable since.
In third year, when George had spent a few weeks in the infirmary after a prank went wrong, Y/N and Fred grew closer as the trio became a duo for a while. They did everything together, and rumours that they were dating grew like wildfire. If they werenāt sitting curled up in the common room together, theyād be out pranking Filtch or sitting by the lake. Y/N went to watch his quidditch practices, and he even tried teaching her to ride a broom which they both concluded was a bad idea, as she fell off multiple times resulting in him running around underneath her, making sure he was ready to catch her if she fell.
Now they were in their fifth year, and although she still remained close to George, and spent quite a lot of time with them both together, most of the time it was just her and Fred. They would sneak into each otherās dorms and stay up all night talking about anything and everything, she had a bad habit of stealing his clothes and Fred had a tendency to scare off any boy who was remotely interested in her. Although some found this weird and insisted this must mean he had feelings for her, Y/N just thought he was protective of her, like he was of his sister Ginny.
Y/N was pulled out of her daze about the twins as a piece of parchment rolled up into a ball hit her in the face. She scowled at George, who was smiling like an idiot.
āYouāll never guess whatās just happened to our Freddie Y/N,ā he said, his smirk growing as Fred started blushing.
Y/N diverted her attention to the other twin, who wasnāt meeting her gaze. If she wasnāt so stressed, she would have thought about how weird he was acting, and would have appreciated how quiet he was being as most of the time it was hard to get him to shut up but her thoughts were now back on to all the work she still had to do.
āWhat?ā she said impatiently as she started gathering up her books, knowing she wouldnāt get anything done with the twins around.
āHeās got himself a date this Saturday, havenāt you Fred?ā George turned to his twin and wiggled his eyebrows suggestively. If Y/N had been paying attention, she would have noticed Freds mouth opening and closing, similar to a goldfish before settling with a quiet āyeahā as his reply. As she flung her bag over her shoulder what they had just said finally settled in. Fred had a date this Saturday. A weird feeling settled in her stomach, almost like she was going to be sick. She looked at Fred who gave her a weak smile then turned to look at the fire.
āOh.ā she replied. Her once decent mood had now turned sour and she knew why. She had felt this before, once when she had a date to Hogsmeade, but at the last minute he had cancelled then the next day she found out it was because he had took someone else. She was jealous. Her gaze remained on Fred, angry thoughts flying around her head. Why was Fred acting so weird with her? And why did she feel like she was going to throw up thinking of him on a date?
George continued on. āYep, some Ravenclaw girl cameā- but whatever else had happened Y/N didnāt hear as she grabbed the rest of her stuff, muttered an excuse about having a headache and ran up to her dorm.
Dropping her stuff on to the floor and flopping down on to her bed, she tried to ignore the feelings of hurt and jealousy. Fred was her best friend, why did she even care he was going out with someone? Sheād never even looked at him with feelings other than friendship and now the thought of him with someone else made her want to rip her hair out. Sure, he was very attractive and had an amazing personality to match but she had never looked at him in that way. Hours passed of her staring at the wall, all the time wondering about the confusing things she was feeling for her best friend and eventually she felt herself drift off.
Saturday came faster than she liked. Although Fred was back to acting like his usual self, and though Y/N forced herself to act like she couldnāt care less about his impending date there was always an awkward silence between the two when they were left alone. This resulted in Y/N hiding out in the library, somewhere she knew Fred rarely stepped foot in. Burying herself into her work was the only way she knew how to avoid her feelings. She couldnāt understand, Fred had been interested in other girls before and yes, sometimes she would feel a bit annoyed about it but she just thought that was due to the fact that Fred never shut up about them, and she did get fed up of hearing about how nice some Hufflepuffs arse was or how better at pranking some Slytherin fourth year was. However, this time if she wasnāt angry about it, she felt sad. Discovering you had feelings for someone normally was a good thing, but Y/N had no doubt in her mind that Fred didnāt feel the same.
Saturday morning came and Y/N got up early, dressed and headed down to breakfast by herself. She was surprised to find the twins already there, sitting with Lee Jordan and laughing about something. As she approached she noticed that Fred had obviously made an effort with his appearance, his hair looked like it had been combed and he had dressed smarter than usual. Y/N debated wether she should sit with them like normal or sneak past and sit with some of her Hufflepuff friends at their table. Her thoughts were interrupted by George though who moved up to make room for her.
She couldnāt find it in her to make much conversation and since they were talking about a new product for Weasleys Wizard Wheezes she wasnāt expected to say much anyway. She could feel Fred staring at her but couldnāt bring herself to meet his eyes. She munched absentmindedly on a piece of toast, wondering about what she could do to take her mind off of it.
āFancy coming into Hogsmeade with us Y/N?ā George asked after a while. She noticed that he had stopped taking part in the conversation and was gazing at her with a knowing look. She had this funny feeling he knew all about her feelings for his twin and was no doubt trying to cheer her up. Some time out with George and Lee would be nice and would definitely take her mind off it but the thought of bumping into Fred with his date made her think twice.
Y/N shook her head. āIām okay, thank you though.ā She turned back to her breakfast but he didnāt seem to want to give up. āHow about I stay here then? You could help me with my charms homework.ā She turned back to him and he was smiling at her and before she could answer he quickly stood up and started to leave the hall. āOkay cool Iāll go get my stuff and Iāll meet you in the library.ā he shouted behind him.
Y/N felt herself smile, for what felt like the first time in ages. Although things werenāt too good with Fred at the moment, she was glad she still had George. He was definitely a lot more sensitive and observant than his twin, and the fact that heād stay with her to do his āhomeworkā which he hated, meant a lot to her. As students started leaving the hall, presumably to start heading to Hogsmeade, Y/N stood up,said goodbye to the boys and made her way to the library.
George was already there, sitting at a table near the back of the room. As she walked over, he threw a paper plane in her direction which exploded as it flew past. Y/N sat down across for him and noticed that he didnāt have any of his books with him.
Y/N laughed. āI knew it, you liar! So much for doing homework.ā She glared at him and waved her finger in his face just like his mother would which caused them both to laugh.
He clutched his chest and mockingly looked hurt. āIām offended that youād even think Iād stay here on a Saturday to do homework. That hurts Y/N.ā They both laughed again then George face suddenly turned serious. āSo are you going to tell me whatās going on between you and Fred?ā
Y/N felt her face drop. Just when she thought sheād be able to forget all about it. She turned her attention to the wall beside her as if it was the most interesting thing sheād ever saw. āI donāt know what your talking about.ā she replied. She heard him chuckle but couldnāt bring herself to look at him.
āYes you do. You like him donāt you?ā Y/N gulped and she felt herself blush. How did he know when she only came to the realisation herself not even a week ago? She looked down at the table and felt her eyes start to water. Without looking at him she muttered āyesā and he reached over the table and rubbed her shoulder. She took a deep breath āH-how did you even know?ā
He sighed. ā I always knew. The both of you were always all over each other, always touching. The way you both stare at each other, the look you have in your eyes, itās obvious. Heās always talking about you, even when you arenāt there. Even I was surprised when he said yes to that date. I was just waiting for him to ask you out if Iām honest.ā Y/N finally looked up and found him staring at her sympathetically. She felt the tears finally spill over, all the feelings from the past week finally getting too much for her. āIf it makes you feel any better that Ravenclaw is very dull. Sheās got nothing on you.ā She laughed, appreciating him trying to make her feel better but she doubted he was really telling the truth.
He stood and walked over to her and opened his arms. Immediately she got up and walked into his arms, letting him engulf her in a hug. āHow about we go rob the kitchens, hmm?ā he said from above her.
The day went by quite fast, with George helping to distract her. As dinner time came she was left alone in the common room after convincing George she wasnāt hungry after the food from earlier and that she would be fine left alone. In all honesty, she did feel better. Talking with George made her realise she just had to get over whatever feelings she had for her friend. The sooner the better in her opinion. Too preoccupied with her thoughts she didnāt realise Fred come through the portrait hole. Noticing she was there, he made his way over cautiously. āCan I sit?ā he asked breaking Y/N out of her daze.
Startled she looked up at him. His cheeks were rosy from the cold and she couldnāt help but notice how good he looked. āYeah of course.ā She motioned to the seat on the couch beside her and as he sat down the smell of his cologne hit her and she noticed how much she was missing him. They had went to speaking nearly every minute of the day to talking maybe once a day. āHow was your date?ā
āIt was great, we had a lot of fun.ā She felt her heart sink, a mean part of her wished he would have said it was rubbish. That they had nothing in common, that he wished heād have spent the day with her instead, like they usually do. Another part of her though felt guilty. He was her best friend, and this was making him happy or at least as far as she knew it was. So why couldnāt she just put her feelings aside and be happy for him? He reached into his pocket and brought out a chocolate frog. āI got this for you. I know you love them.ā She smiled at him as she took it and he smiled back and started telling her about the new stuff they had at Zonkos and it was like everything was back to normal. But whenever he smiled at her or laughed at something she said, Y/N felt her heart race and she was reminded that she didnāt just see him as a friend anymore. She wanted more, and the more she was around him the more she couldnāt avoid her feelings any longer. She was in love with him.
As the weeks passed, the time Y/N spent with the twins dwindled to almost none. After one transfiguration lesson where Fred revealed he would be going on another date with the girl, Y/N resolved to avoiding him as much as she could. Which also meant she was avoiding George because most of the time when you found one the other twin wouldnāt be far behind. She thought that the less she saw him, talked to him, spent any time at all with him the more her feelings would fade and within no time she would be back to being their best friend again. This was further than the truth, the more she didnāt see him the more she longed for him. She missed him, missed the way she would sneak into his dorm at night when she couldnāt sleep and heād hold her until she did, she missed how he would walk her to class and leave kisses on her forehead as he left, most of all she just missed talking to him.
The library became her safe place, as there was no way she could sit in the common room without bumping into him. She stopped going to meals and ended up eating whatever she had brought from home. She spent barley any time in her dorm as she knew he could easily get in. One part of her sat awake at night wondering if he even noticed her absence, maybe he was too occupied with the girl he was seeing that he had forgotten about her.
One Friday afternoon, Y/N was coming out of Defence Against the Dark Arts when she felt someone grab her and pull her into a broom cupboard and slam the door shut. She didnāt need to worry about who it was as she recognised the smell of him straight away. It was Fred.
Suddenly he pushed her against the wall his arms above her head caging her in. Her heart was racing being this close to him after weeks of not even seeing him, let alone touch him. Y/N kept her head down, hair falling in front of her eyes.
āYouāre avoiding me.ā She shook her head and kept her eyes on the floor. She heard him sigh and push away from the wall and from her. Immediately she missed him against her, and she had to restrain herself from pulling him back. She looked up and saw him pacing the small space, his head in his hands. Finally he looked up at her and guilt hit her like a truck, he had bags under his eyes and just all round looked like shit. He stepped closer again and stared down at her. āPlease just tell me what iāve done, love. Iāll do anything to fix it please just tell me.ā She heard his voice break and sheād never felt so bad in her life. Tears started running down her cheeks at the sight of him. Had her selfishness really affected him this much?
She felt herself be pulled into his arms, his chin resting on the top of her head, and she didnāt have it in her to pull away. She buried her head into his chest, and let herself cry. He rocked her, whispering comforting words in her ear the full time. How everything would be okay, how he was there for her, how he always would be and nothing would change that, that he loved her.
A pain shot through her chest at this. He loved her, but not in the way she wanted, and it hurt. She pushed him away, wiped away her tears and glared at him as much as she could. āLeave me alone Fred.ā she said. Trying to sound as distant as she could. She turned on her heel and made for the door, but as soon as he realised this he moved in front of her. āYou arenāt going anywhere.ā Now he looked annoyed, he crossed his arms over his chest and Y/N took note of how good he looked when he was angry. āWeāre staying in here until you tell me whatās wrong, sweetheart.ā She ignored the butterfly feeling in her stomach from the nickname and crossed her own arms, imitating him.
She planned to stay quiet but curiosity got the best of her and she blurted out before she could stop herself. āDonāt you have a girlfriend to get to?ā She cringed at how jealous she sounded and her cheeks tinged red with embarrassment.
āGirlfriend?ā he retorted, his voice laced with confusion. Then it hit him. āOh you mean Ruby.ā
Y/N glared at the floor, even her name was perfect. Why couldnāt it be something not so nice like Beatrice?
āAfter the third date, I broke it off. We ran out of things to talk about really fast, and she disapproved of this prank me and George pulled on Snape. Definite red flag there.ā He chuckled to himself and Y/N almost felt herself laugh with him. āAnd I was thinking about you most of the time.ā In a way she felt relieved. There wasnāt anyone to be jealous of anymore, but she also dreaded how worse it would be the next time someone new came along. āCāmon please just tell me.ā he pleaded with her.
Y/N looked up at him, and saw the hurt in his eyes and she knew she had to tell him. She couldnāt let him blame himself, believe he had done something wrong when he hadnāt been anything except perfect. It was all her. The fear that she could
lose him as a friend altogether after telling him though made the tears start falling again and as he made to take her in his arms once more, she held her hand in front of her to stop him coming any nearer.
She took a deep breath. āI think- I think Iām in love with you.ā
Silence filled the space. Y/N wished he would say something, anything at all. She looked at him and his face was completely blank. Her fears had came true, he didnāt feel the same, and now she was going to lose him.
āThis is why I didnāt want to tell you, please just let me out.ā She was back to trying to get out the door. Struggling to push his lanky figure from the door, she almost missed him starting to smile. She looked up at him and the glare that graced her face made him smile even more.
Who did he think he was, Y/N thought. Nothing about her unrequited feelings was funny, at least to her it wasnāt. āNothing about this is funny Fred. Just let me past.ā
āYou love me.ā he said with a smile. Y/N glared up at the tall boy. āI said I think I do, you moron.ā
He started laughing at this and if Y/N wasnāt annoyed before, she definitely was now. Before she could do anything though she felt herself being spun around and pinned against the door. Next thing she knew Fred had bent down and pressed his lips to hers roughly.
Shocked, it took Y/N a minute to respond and as she felt Fred start to pull away, she grabbed him by the shoulders and kissed him back with as much passion and love as she could. The whole reason she had avoided him was because she had no idea how to tell him of her feelings. This could be how though. Fred let out a groan, and all she could think about was how she wanted to hear that again and again.
Why hadnāt she just done this in the first place? If she had told him this weeks before, she wouldnāt have had to go through the pain of missing him? And to her it looked like he had missed her too.
The kiss ended too fast for her liking, but she let him push back from her. Nervousness was all she felt now. What did that kiss even mean? Did he like her back or did he just pity her?
He pushed a bit of hair back from her face. āDo you know how long iāve waited to here you say that?ā A large grin spread across his face and he picked her up and spun her around, knocking over a few mops and brooms in the process. He put her down and started placing kisses all over her face. Y/N laughed, squirming to get away from him. As much as she was loving the affection from him she needed to know if he at least liked her back. āIāve missed your laugh, so so much.ā His eyes were back on her lips and as much as she wanted to kiss him again, she had to know.
She looked down at the ground and played with her fingers, not wanting to meet his eye. āSo- so does this mean that you..ā she trailed off, finding it hard to finish the sentence.
He gripped her chin in his hands, his eyes meeting hers. āIt means that I love you too, you moron.ā
