I thought it was pretty cute Ziall moment, where Zayn just can’t keep his hands to himself, and once again touches his boy, and niall in his turn resists a little, because obviously Zayn chose not the best place to show his feelings. I thought in that way until i have learned some of the details. Now I’m starting slightly differently perceive the situation, and all eventually leads to the fact, that it’s the showdown.
This gifs from the press conference for This is us, August 18 2013. Yes, you aren’t mistaken - the day when Zayn allegedly proposed to Perrie. I don’t believe in the authenticity of this engagement, and I guess that on this day (before the conferences), the management told them that Perrie after a couple of days will come to a premiere with a ring on her ring finger, assuming the role of the Zayn’s bride.
And on these gif, Zayn tries to hold Niall for conversation (yes, Zayn anyway chose not the most suitable place for this purpose).
On the second one you can see how Niall furiously says him something, and Zayn immediately join with him in physical contact, gently put his hand on his stomach, into a kind of soothing gesture.
Liam and Harry immediately go toward the exit, but Louis marks time, and it seems like he watching for Niall and Zayn, look after them, so those aren’t too dispersed.

Talking about the break, i don’t know whether to be sad or happy, honestly. I’m not afraid that they will break the promise because i know they will not. I’m just afraid if there is something that makes them unable to be back, whether it comes from themself, or maybe from us or from whoever. Like you know everything could change in every time, i know that also but i’m afraid all turn into what i didn’t expect. I know it sounds so selfish but i’m just not ready if that happened. I used to spend the last 5 years with them in every single day, they rule my life so i have no idea if they’re gone. I know one day i’ll have to let them go, forever. But not this fast. Besides all of my fears, i also feel happy they finally get time to rest. I can imagine how happy they are when they wake up on their own bed, when they out of the room and saw their family gather, hanging out until midnight with some friends, date whoever they like, do what ever they want to do, and go back sleep till afternoon. No early phone calls to wake them up, guard less, no rules for everything they should do, no compulsion, everything is just relax. 18 months is a long time but i think it’s fair compared to what they have gave to us for the last 5 years. They really deserve it. I felt so happy to be with them virtually for the last 5 years. Now it’s turn for them to be happy with people they want for years. It’s gonna be so hard for me but it’s ok. I’ll be ok. I know someday it will happen, no more counting down for new album, no more concerts, no more new stuff will be launched, but my mama say just enjoy what you have now. If i can ask for some things, please always keep yourself safe, each of you. And don’t forget you always had us in every corner of this world. For this time, i don’t care what will be happen soon, i’ll not let them go, i’ll never forget them, just if they ask me to. It’s a mutual. They are the best idol in the world, and so we are the best fans in the world. We have promised each other.

Except Zayn always has to go, and Niall always has to wait, and they both get lost without each other.

I feel like Niall misses Zayn in his way Like Zayn was the one Niall let be extra touchy extra everything extra in love with him always touching him always looking at him and….. there’s a great regretful sigh. Niall is happy that it worked out, that they’re all happy, that Zayn’s happier–but the sigh. Oh, that sigh. Heaved of pain and the long struggle to get to that point and the regret that Zayn couldn’t be happy with them
“His heart couldn’t be in it as much as he wanted it to be” I don’t know it was just interesting that he phrased it in that way–that it wasn’t as much as zayn wanted it to be. There’s an interesting note there about passionate, impulsive Zayn who needs to be all in about something.

In other words: i have a lot of feels, but it feels sincere? Maybe that’s me projecting onto Niall, who is of course just as media trained as the rest of them, but I hope it’s genuine, the affection where he says he’s happy, and the mixed up emotions in it. As I said–as long as Niall ships OT5, i’m okay.
no, but listen to me. ziall has that type of relationship everyone wishes they had; the low-key, being in love but not sharing your love type of relationship. their touches aren't for the cameras benefits, they're to reassure the other, to support each other. their smiles aren't forged or exaggerated, they appear as soon as the other is within eyesight, along with the looks and glances. they don't need to shout their love from the rooftops. they show their love by the hugs they share, the tight grip they hold on each other when they wrap their arms around the other for comfort. its in the way they listen to each other, truly listen to the words as if it's a beautiful poem to their ears. it's shown in the way niall slowly breaks zayn out of his shell, and how zayn can simmer nialls ever present energy by a touch to the waist or an arm around the shoulder. their love is quiet, overpowered from the rush of the band, but loud in the way they shine for the other. where zayn is usually quiet, the shadow of the band, the light within him bursts out in the form of fond around niall. their love is secretive, barely noticable of you don't pay attention. and I think that's beautiful. ziall is beautiful.
