the way i see medical care as is like the roots of an interconnected web of trees, bassicly interconnected trees send nutrition from all the hundreds of other trees to one specific tree when its damaged. Autism is not something that needs a fucking cure. Autism is something that needs to be better understood & accommodated for. If you are too impatient to understand that, then that's a failing on your behalf

doesnt it take like years of psychological analysis for a medical transition, like at that point you know if the child actually needed it. and like what happens if the child gets an autism diagnoses? do they still get the medical transition? is this even for like a study on if being trans is related to autism? because it just isnt related, i believe being trans has to do with specific white/gray matter levels being different in the brain, which certainly isnt what autism is.

happy autism acceptance month. this month, regardless if you're abled or disabled, allistic or autistic, try to consider if you really do accept people with autism. all aspects of autism. people who:

without volume control

talk to themselves or make sounds (seemingly) at random

have huge screaming meltdowns

stim any way, including smearing body fluids

only talk about one subject and will never "move on"

stare inappropriately

struggle with personal hygiene

are unemployed

who left education early ("dropped out")

has a carer and will always need one

don't use mouth words to communicate

have comorbid intellectual disability and don't want to separate that from their autism

autism acceptance month can't truly be about acceptance if we don't broaden our understanding of autism and confront our internal biases. these things listen above are normal parts of autism. sometimes very common. there's stigma around them, but that's stigma we can actively fight.

quick comment on the "spoke to animals like they were listening" thing, animals do understand tone, and that tone does include calmness and "speaking to someone you enjoy" tone, so claiming someone is stupid because the animal was unaware of the love someone is sending it is kinda an asshole thing to say. The animal is understanding what someone is saying, just not their words.

ive always believed that every person has skills unique to them, that theyre supposed to use in society, but instead its demanded that everyone has these specific skills or you "failed in life". im convinced people who dont understand proper skill usage couldnt manage to fit the triangle block in the triangle hole.

Hey, here’s a concept. What if we stopped saying “but autistic people CAN do all those things” (erasing high support needs) and instead started saying “not being able to do those things doesn’t impact someone’s value as a person nor does it make it okay to commit eugenics”.

my theory is that a lot of "autistic behaviors" are just behaviors that anyone would do if they were no longer masking, like theres a lot of "queer behaviors" that are just due to people not caring about social stigma or judgement and just being comfterble as themselves instead, like wearing dresses, vibrant colours, being "weird", being flamboyand, etc.

like i never wear jeans or tight socks, not because the texture is bad and triggering my sensitivety, but just because its way more comfterble wearing baggy pants and wooly socks [and thats true for everyone]. And hey, society already thinks im lazy and stupid, so why not wear something more comfterble that society also thinks is lazy?

also liking specific animals, everyone deep down has a specific animal they like and think are cute, but just never play into it, because society deems that as "childish", "unaware", "stupid", hell "intimate", etc.

But us autistic people no longer care about stigma or judgement, we just do what we think is good for ourselfs, like wearing baggy pants, having fun with your friends, having a favorite animal, quitting a job for a better one, having long hair as a boy (and gender swapped), even one of the most cited autistic behaviours (having a media you really like) is just due to not caring about stigma, its not due to weird behaviors or autistic people being "stupid" and "lazy" and "childish", its just due to having fun, and not caring what people think.

its always funny when people say "lgbtqia+ is based on sexuality" because like dude the only ones that even include sexuality (and are commonly used) is just LG and B, like three of them. the more I get back in my habit from 2018-ish of searching "asexual" on blogs before I make a habit of interacting with them frequently, the more I realize that a lot of people started to reblog way less aphobia circa 2018, but without literally any sign of their opinions on asexual people changing, or making any effort to include them.

and that's how we get the current tumblr climate. people doing a disservice to important stuff like sex positivity or kink at pride, by just regurgitating shit like "well sex is what makes us queer, you fucking prude." instead of, you know, actually talking about why sex positivity is important for a wide range of sexualities, or why kink at pride has a long historical context. or even bringing up the fact that policing/mocking people's relationship with sex just for being different than yours is just inherently bad in and of itself. the aphobia is still ingrained in this site, just subtler now.

The thing is, autism is just a slight genetic bump, so trying to "fix" it would mean killing millions upon millions of people, just to try and rub that non-existing stain out of the gene pool, that will come back due to mutations. Like this shit is just evolutionarilly flawed, anyone whos even heard about evolution in school can look at it for 5 seconds and see the issues, because they are just so glaringly obvious.

There IS better autism research they could be doing, like trying to discover other medications that help with sensory issues and quality of life problems and trying to get better childhood diagnosis rates for autistic girls. But no, the decades long useless search to find out what causes autism and how to eliminate it continues. The push for “autism research” is never really about how to make things better for autistic people, it’s about how to make autistic people stop existing and that is nottttt possible. But they’ll continue to fixate on it.

my tumblr algorthim seems to think i have a chronic illness and is intersex, my youtube algorith thinks im trans, my twitter algorithm *thinks* i love bigotry. this is what happens when you try to learn about other peoples culture, like why is it so stigmatized to learn and listen to people? Taking care of the disabled and injured is human nature actually. We have evidence of our ancestors caring for folks with disabilities. We're a cooperative species that takes care of their own. If our starving, weary, and hunted ancestors could care for the disabled members of their tribe, in this era of modern medicine and abundant resources we absolutely can afford to do the same.

this line of thinking comes from the bandwagon fallacy; "well everyone i know can do it, and you look like everyone i know because you dont have a *visible* disability, so you can do it"

i hate people who say "just go do it" because you cant just do something as an autistic person, and in a lot of situations you cant do it because you are forced into doing it 100% instead of just taking steps there

I hate how often some (typically abled) people will go “well, if you can’t [get a specific support], then what?” when it comes to disabilities. As if it’s a “gotcha” moment. And then act like you’re exaggerating when you answer that question honestly.

Disabled people often die from a lack of support. A lot of disability aids are not a luxury, but a basic need in order to live.

“Well what happens if—” people die. People hurt themselves. People hurt others. Disabled people don’t magically become abled if our needs aren’t met.

If a bedbound quadriplegic is caught in a housefire, and there’s nobody there to save them, they’ll probably die. They won’t magically become able-bodied out of sheer will.

If a nonspeaking/nonverbal autistic is denied access to alternative methods of communication, they’ll suffer in silence. They won’t spontaneously become capable of speech.

Disabled people are disabled all the time. Our disabilities don’t go away just because they’re inconvenient, or if we’re in danger.

despite popular belief, time travel is actually a low level spell. Reminder they want to increase the budget for ICE from 3.5 to 45 billion dollars.

Reminder the majority of that will be for building new detention centers.

Reminder ICE are *currently* detaining tourists who can pay for a plane ticket home and people with visa issues that were already resolved, because they have to make quota so Trump can brag about the numbers going up.

If you tell someone to "look at me when I'm talking to you", I instantly assume you're a bully toward autistic people, because you are.

Unless they're actively focused on something else, you can't accurately assume someone isn't listening just because of where they're looking.

It's not a sign of "disrespect" to not make eye contact. And if you were taught that it is, unlearn it.
