A New Addition To The Club Is The Newly Recognized Species, The Australian Snubfin Dolphin. Check Out

I loved drawing this one. As someone commented on a dolphin I posted from the same family: Is like the pandas of the water. Again, what fascinates me the most about doing this animal encyclopedia is that I get to know mammals I didn't know existed and I can share that information with you all. Thank you for following and being interested. Let's see what can we learn from this wonderful dolphin.

Hector's Dolphin Hector's Dolphin lives exclusively on the coasts of New Zealand. They can live up to 22 years and are some of the smallest dolphins in the world. (If I'm not wrong the Vaquita is the smallest). Because of its size, predators can be numerous. Blue sharks, White sharks, Broadnose sevengill sharks, and probably Killer whales and Mako sharks. They hunt using echolocation which is basically finding prey using sound (Just as bats do). Their clicks (the sound they make) isn't as complex as other animals and travel short distances. Nonetheless is enough for them, since their environment is crowded and sound wouldn't be able to go long distances anyways. This animal is not in danger but its subspecies, the Māui Dolphin is probably one of the most endangered dolphins in the world, if not the most. Antarctic Mink Whale.

First, it was believed to be a subspecies of the Mink Whale but in the 90's it was discovered to be a different species. Like the Mink Whale, it was ignored by whalers because its size made it one of the most abundant whales in the world. However, the decline of other whales, made the Mink Whale today one of the mainstays of the industry, therefore its numbers have started to decline too.

I don't believe whaling should be banned but I do believe it should have stronger control. I think cultures that do whaling shouldn't be deprived of something they have been doing for generations and also helped them to develop into the cultures and countries they are today. But it has to be responsible, as anything else.

These days we have been witnessed violent climate issues in different areas around the world that are just telling us what is coming in the near future if we don't change the way we treat the planet. Just take what you need so others also can have some.

The digital sticker album is almost done. I will begin with Perissodactyla order which contains the rhinos, horses, and tapirs families. Is looking good and the mechanics are working. More of it soon. Let's see the animal of this week. Māui Dolphin This is a subspecies of Hector's Dolphin (The one I showed you the last time). Also, live uniquely on New Zealand coasts, but more specifically in a very small range of the West of the North Island of the country. Sadly, less than 60 animals exist in the wild, making it the most endangered dolphin in the world. There are several programs that are in action in order to protect it from extinction and the results have been somehow optimistic. Fishing, Toxoplasmosis (an infection caused by a parasite called Toxoplasma), Brucellosis (a Bacteria), Oil and gas operations, and Climate change are the reasons why this dolphin is on the brink of extinction. It's always sad to see an animal fading away. I hope the programs that are working to recover their numbers work. Here is a link to one of them in case you want to know more. The last species of the Equidae family, The zebras! Zebras have three distinctive species and 10 subspecies. It is probably the most beloved of the equines, (apart from the horses of course) and it is indeed a very particular animal. 

On the other hand, to solve the mystery of the color of the zebras once and for all (if they are white with black stripes, or black with withe stripes), I can assure that these ones are black with white stripes.

Grevy’s Zebra or Imperial Zebra: The largest and the most threatened. Its population has declined from 15000 to 3000 since the 70′s. Although since 2008 it’s population has been stable. It differs in behavior from the other species because it doesn’t form big harems. It has narrower stripes and bigger size. Its main problem was hunting since its skin was highly appreciated in the market. Today the Grevy’s Zebra is protected in Ethiopia and Kenya making a decline in the hunting. However, habitat loss and competing for natural resources with livestock became its main issue. Posters in my store: Here

I loved working and learning about this family, and I completely fell in love with the Okapi, which has become one of my new favorite animals. I must say that designing the art print was really challenging, but I am very happy with the result.

This post took me some time. Here some nice posters with all the equines.

The first one has all of them, including species and subspecies. Because they are so many I felt that need it a more stiff design so is easy to understand the family and on the genus and subgenus that belong to the family. It is very complete, name, scientific name and also conservation status. 

On the next poster, I just focus in showing the species and named the subspecies. Because they were less to show, gave me some room to play with the design and sizes so the illustrations can be appreciated better.

The last poster is for the zebras. I felt that such an iconic animal deserves a poster. All then subspecies with the scientific names and the conservation status.

Lesser Mouse Deer

Not much is known about this species. It seems to be an apparent lack of interest to study this family which to me is hard to explain if we count that are the smallest hoofed animals in the world and hasn’t changed much in millions of years. This shows a form of adaptability that is remarkable and that I believe deserves to be studied.

Because very little is known about this animal in general, is hard to assess a truthful census. It’s known to be widely spread in Southeast Asia and is often part of the menu of villagers or even taken as a pet. (Please don’t have one. Let’s leave wild things wild)

Wild Boar / Sus scrofa The most subspecies with a total of 16. Different authors recognize up to 32 subspecies. Colin Groves undertook probably the most comprehensive review when proposing the recognition of at least 16 morphologically distinct subspecies. However, his work has been challenged by Peter Genov who proposed recognition of only 4 subspecies. We are going to follow Colin Groves studies and we portrayed 16 subspecies. today the first four. Central European boar This boar was held in a high esteem by the Celtic culture and it was often seen engraved in helmets, shields and swords. It was considered a sacred animal.

Carpathian boar One of the biggest if not the biggest subspecies with males recorder to weigh more than 300 kg. Such size make immune to wolves. Nowadays is rare to see an animal that size, due to past overhunting which prevent animals from attaining their full growth.

Mediterranean boar, Sardinian wild boar The Sardinian wild boar shows a significant closer relationship with the domestic pig. This suggests that this subspecies was originated in the Neolithic  from populations of domesticated domestic pigs. 

Anatolian Boar Very common board in the Judean and Jerusalem area. In Haifa, they can be spot roaming the streets of the city, specially in darkness where they destroy big can trash in the searching of food. They can be dangerous at night to car drivers. Maremman boar   It is assumed extinct due to the introduction of another subspecies in the area. Because of the crossing of subspecies, the subgenus in question lost its unique gene pool.

Nubian Wild Ass Equus africanus africanus Family: Equidae Status and Conservation: Critically Endangered

This animal, resembling the Somali Wild Ass, lacks leg stripes but features a distinctive stripe along its back.

Once thought extinct in the wild since the 1970s,.
