I know the Bornean Elephant is not yet a subspecies but I decided to include it because analysis indicates that it will be elevated as a subspecies soon. Alpaca The beginnings of the Alpaca is more related to the Vicuña but it has been recently breed with Llamas. It’s domestication is been happening for thousand years and contrary to the Llama who was domesticated as a working animal and wool provider, the Alpaca is been domesticated exclusively for its wool, which can be used extensively.

As common as it is now, the Alpaca was at the brick of the extinction in the 1500′s when the Spanish discovered America. They decimated the species at the point that it was believed extinct. However, the animal move to higher altitudes, where later, in the XIX century was rediscovered. As a domestic animal, today can be seen everywhere in the world. It’s domestication and maintenance is not difficult.

The differences between the two breeds are remarkably visible.

Western Sumatran Rhinoceros

The first time I knew about the existence of this animal, I was 9 years old. It wasn't a photograph but an illustration and I was completely astonished that an animal that resembles prehistoric times was still among us. I finally saw a photograph when I was about 15. There wasn't any internet at that time so access to things was entirely through books. One of my wishes in life is to see one of these ones in person but knowing its precarious situation, the hope to see one fades a little every day. The Western Sumatran Rhinoceros is the most numerous of all the three subspecies with no more than 80 individuals. This subspecies was the last one to inhabit a zoo. The Cincinnati Zoo. The animal left the zoo in 2015 to return to Indonesia in order to start a reproduction program that has brought some success but nothing significant.

Giant Peccary

is a possible fourth species of peccary, discovered in Brazil in 2003. It was formally described in 2007, but the evidence of its status is been questioned for that reason its evaluation in 2008 was resulted in Data Deficient. In 2011 this species was moved to the Collared Peccary but still some believe it might be another species and further studies have to be done to prove it.

Meet the cacomistle, a nocturnal acrobat of the forests! 🌙🌿 This elusive little mammal is a cousin of raccoons, sporting big curious eyes and a striped tail that would make a fashion model jealous. It can climb like a pro and twist its ankles 180 degrees to scamper down trees headfirst—because why take the normal route? 🤸‍♂️

Western Black Rhinoceros

This subspecies of Black Rhinoceros was declared extinct in 2011. Surveys have been done since 2006 but have been fruitless. Poaching was the main cause of its extinction. Rhino sperm is conserved after the extinction of the animal and scientists have been trying to bring back to life this subspecies, using the wombs of Southern White Rhinoceros but all attempts have failed.

If this is an animal that we all love and we all have our eyes on, and still went extinct, just imagine those ones we might even don't know exist. This is one of the reasons why I decided to do this project. We cannot take care of the beings we don't know exists.

Visayan Warty Pig

The Visayan Warty Pig has two subspecies that were recognized as such until 2000. Unfortunately, we have lost one of the subspecies, the Cebu Wart Pig and the other, the Negros Warty Pig is critically endangered.

Its biggest threat is habitat loss causing by commercial logging and farming. It is extinct in 98% of its native range. 

Other studies indicated that there might be other subspecies of this Pig inhabiting the island of Panay in the Philippines.
