Why Cast A Circle?

Now That I’ve Begun Working More With Energy, I Wanted To Share My Methods Of Casting Circles! When

now that i’ve begun working more with energy, i wanted to share my methods of casting circles! when i first started working with energy, it was really hard to find references for casting circles, especially ones not dealing with the traditional Wiccan god/goddess. here are some methods and uses of casting circles!

Why Cast a Circle?

the primary reason i cast circles is to protect me from outside energy influences. most people associate circles to protection from ‘malevolent’ spirits, however, it’s just a great barrier in general!

here are some following scenarios i cast circles:

divination- to protect me from energies that might influence my cards or my interpretation o the cards

spellwork- pretty self-explanatory. i cast circles to protect from energies i don’t want in my spells, or from potential spirit attraction.

meditation- again, for energy use and to also not be disturbed from anything spiritual.

Methods of Casting

1 - Invoking Elements

a very basic way, if not the go-to way, of casting is to place each of the four elements at each of the cardinal directions. Earth at the north, Air in the east, Fire at the south, and Water in the west.

fire

Candles (color them for intent if used in a spell! alternatively, electric tea lights work fine.)

here is a post about color associations for candles!

Anything symbolic of fire colors (red or warm-colored cloth, figures/statues,etc.)

water

moon/sun water (in a jar works really well, or in an open container if being used for blessing anything)

blessed water, or water related to whatever you’re working with (storm water, diluted essential oils, etc).

here is a good source of different kinds of water and how to cleanse them!

blue or purple colored items

earth

stones or crystals (this is what i love to use! just be wary that some stones are aligned with other elements. clear quartz is a go-to.)

salt

dirt (from your backyard or specific, such as hospital or graveyard. make sure to cleanse it.)

herbs (especially roots)

brown or black colored items

air

incense (different scents have uses as well!)

here is a post with scent correspondences!

steam

yellow or white colored items

alternatively, any of these could be replaced with a tarot card of the corresponding suit! (wands for fire, cups for water, pentacles for earth, and swords for air).

to close the circle, walk clockwise starting in the east (air) and complete a full walk around the circle. do this as many times as you feel needed to envision a complete circle! after your use for it is done, unwind it by walking the same number of times counter-clockwise.

note: if you live in the southern hemisphere, you may want to reverse fire and earth in your directions and walk counter-clockwise to close the circle, and clockwise to end it.

2 - Envisioning

this is a very, very simple way to cast a circle! if you have very little time, simply imagine a ring of light around your workspace. you could align color to purpose as well.

the only downsides to this method include the fact that it may not be as strong as a physical circle for beginners especially, as i have learned many times over as i find energy that i don’t want in the circle. on top of this, to make it very successful, you may have to keep this image in your head throughout your spell or energy work, which may distract or hurt your concentration.

however, like i said before, it’s very easy, discreet, and requires no clean up! with practice, it could be very easy to maintain.

3 - Salt Circle

by simply spreading salt in a circle clockwise (or counter-clockwise depending on your location), you can create a strong barrier. as you walk around, envision your purpose of protection and safety.

if you are working outside, do not use salt. it will kill plant life! instead, consider alternatives such as: egg shells, diluted salt water, crushed herbs, flower petals, etc.

if working inside, consider setting out foil, cloth, or a tarp for easy cleanup.

4 - Cleansing the Room Itself

if you find that you for some reason cannot cast a circle, or maybe are just starting out, consider cleansing the entire room instead!

some methods include:

smoke cleansing (NOT smudging. please do not call this action smudging unless it is part of YOUR culture.)

salt or protective mixture

dance/song

salt/water spray

incense and candles

for smoke cleansing, light your bundle and start facing eastward, spreading the smoke and asking for protection from either the corresponding element or any deities/spirits/etc. you worship. move clockwise or counterclockwise.

for salt or protection mixtures, simply place a small pile in each corner of the room or at the cardinal directions.

dance and song can celanse the room when accompanied with smoke especially.

the salt water spray can be used similar to the protection mixture – spray a little in each corner or at the cardinal directions.

incense and candles can be placed in corners, the directions, or just throughout the room to act as protective energy.

Final Notes

make sure to remove your circle after you’re done!! leaving it up isn’t safe and could be draining on your energy or health.

try not to leave the circle in the middle of your work, if it can be avoided. ive had to do it before and nothing bad happened, but sometimes it ocould break the circle, or bring unwanted energy or precense in.

do your absolute best to have all your materials in the circle before you cast it. bringing items that were not in the circle before could carry energy that you just do not want in your circle. i’ve messed up plenty spells because of it already. if it is really necessary, cleanse the item as thoroughly as you can (quickly if you need to), and enter the circle from the east.

if these methods don’t work right away, don’t worry! these take lots of practice. some easy ways to try casting daily include:

cast a circle before you meditate

cleanse your room before you do homework for a safe space to work

if you have a form of divination, cast a circle before drawing a daily reading (i do this in the morning to see how the day will go or seek advice for the day!).

good luck!

A Simple Bind To Shut Someone Up

For when you want someone to quit talking shit.

Procedure:

Take a piece of paper and draw a tongue (a horseshoe shape with a line going down the middle) then draw a large X through it.

Write beneath the drawing “You will hold your tongue.”

Fold the piece of paper over and glue it shut, or take a safety pin and pin it closed.

Slip this into a jar with a layer of black salt (or mud) at the bottom of it. Seal the jar and store in a place that light will not reach it.

* I did this simple binding when a manager would not lay off my ass and it worked fairly well for me. Happy binding!

What to use when in Witchcraft -

Ok so I am gonna say this is my personal reference, its mainly through associations. You might TOTALLY disagree and thats chill!

Its more something to think about and a guideline of what I use myself…

Candle Magic:

Carve a candle when…. the candle represents the target, in sympathetic magic. When, essentially, the candle is a poppet and lighting it is a symbol of destruction or empowerment to the target.

Place something under the candle or before it when… you are doing general candle magic, when the candle represents empowering a wish, idea or concept.

Anoint the candle when… doing work with spirits and gods, when you mark the candle for a special purpose, when doing high magic.

Herbs and plant work:

Use dry herbs when… it is convienent to do so, when the herbs are out of season or when you need to store them in a jar or bottle for a long time.

Use fresh herbs when… the spell is very earth orientated, when doing magic on behalf of another or when the magic is sympathetic so that the herbs represent the target, within kitchen witchery.

Use flowers when… when the spell concerns love and sex, or perhaps fertility and attraction, due to flowers being the reproductive parts of the plant.

Use fruit when when… working with children as a target, or with children practising. When you work with fertility and abundance spells.

Use wood and twigs when… when the spell is for protection or binding, for hardiness.

Burn herbs (recaning/incense) when… you wish to cleanse or banish, or invoke an atmosphere - that being, for divination using herbs that are said to open up your perceptions, when banishing, burning acrid or pungent herbs.

Use oil infusions when… you wish to anoint something, when you wish to mark something permanently.

Use floral waters (rose water etc) when… dealing with spirits and gods, for glamour as it has a long history of being used to beautify.

Crystals:

Use metals (haematite, copper, ores etc..) when… you work in protection, when you do energy work due to the conductive properties of metal.

Use shell, pearl, coral and such when… you work in sea magic, when you work within emotional magic due to the element of water.

Use points when… you wish to direct magic to a target.

Use tumble stones when… you wish the magic to be gentle or manifest at a certain place on the body on a target.

Use geodes when… you work in protection, when you work with glamour aimed to obscure and hide.

Knot magic:

Use cotton when… it is convenient.

Use silk when… doing spells that benefit the target.

Use ribbons when… love spells and wealth spells, as well as confidence and beauty spells. Spells to ensure victory.

Use rope when… doing spells that aim to hurt or weaken the target, binding especially.

Poppets:

Use cloth when… the spell aims to benefit who the poppet represents, use particular care when sewing or cutting, choose colours that are appropriate to them.

Use wax when… you wish to manipulate the target.

Use clay when… wish to create fetches or servitors, when you wish to create permanency.

Use twigs when… you wish to bury or throw the poppet out, when you want the poppet to be easily destroyed by breaking or setting on fire.

Sigils:

Use an alphabet grid or circle when… you wish the sigil to be more random and less attached to you.

Combine the shapes of letters from a sentence… when your sigil is very specific and a short term goal.

Use your own personal symbols when… you want the magic to be connected to you, when it is personal.

A Little Witchy Guide of Candle Magick

I’ve gotten a few questions about candles and candle magick here and there, so I figured I’d make another Little Witchy Guide! If I have left anything out, please let me know! :) I really hope this helps you and please feel free to ask me any questions of any kind! :D

Candle magic is an ancient art and it is the most widely used magic practiced today. The candle itself is a very powerful magical tool it contains all the basic elements earth, wind, fire and water, earth is represented in the wax, water the melted wax, the flame fire and the air is the smoke. The colour of the candles is very important as the different colours will bring with it its own energy and power, green for healing, red for empowerment etc. Each of the elements has with it its own single coloured candle, green for earth, yellow for air, blue is for water and red is for fire. The different colours also represent either a yin female or yang male energy, yellow is yin, green is yang, blue is yin and red is yang.

A candle is believed to have its own vibration and can be used in meditation and divination, pink or violet is a calm and soft light where as red is strong and powerful, when a candle is lit its colour is released into the surrounding area which will bring a nice energy into the room. If during your ritual you need a lot of power, light multiple candles. By rubbing oil over a candle before your ritual this will charge the candle with your own personal energy.

Magical tips on candles:

It’s always a good idea to clean candles, this will strengthen their power.

Candles prefer not to be blown out, but to be put out using a toll or wet fingertips, blowing out the candle may insult the element.

It is best to use a different candle for each magical purpose, if you are using a red candle for love and a white one for healing, keep them separate.

A white candle is symbolic of purity and can be used in place of any other colour.

Any candle can be used in your magic, but beeswax candles are more powerful.

Engraving a candle is a good way to bring about your wish and by adding a letter of the magical alphabet you will bring mystery and connection to the ancient art of Wicca. A simple example could be to engrave a heart for love and a dollar sign for wealth in your ritual.

If a candle goes out whilst you are practicing doing magic, this is a sign, a message.

On your birthday when blowing out the candles you perform an act of candle magic. No one really knows where the idea of placing candles on a birthday cake came from, the main possibility is from the ancient Greeks who would bake round cakes in honour of their Moon goddess Artemis, it is said that the Greeks placed candles around the cake to resemble a glowing Moon.

Using your own homemade candles will greatly increase their power, candles are very easy to make, you only need to heat wax, add the wick and leave it to cool down then place it into a fire-safe bowl to burn the rest of the way down.

Looking into the flame of a candle is the perfect way to regain or strengthen focus .

A simple candle ritual is to sit in a darkened room facing a mirror, place the candle in front of you and look at your reflection, let your eyes relax and after a few moments your face will begin to change. Your reflection will reveal what you looked like in your past lives. This magic ritual can also be done with a friend. Both of you sit in a darkened room with a candle between you, and as you look at each other letting your eyes relax, you will see what your friend looked like in their past lives.

Some simple yet powerful candle magic is to write your wish on a piece of paper and fold it in half, light one corner with the candle flame and hold the paper as long as you can before the flame reaches your fingers.

To charge your candle you can rub essential oil into it, this will add power to your magic, any oil can be used it’s a personal preference.

Each of the twelve astrological star signs has a specific colour, you may wish to burn the candle for your star sign to empower yourself and enhance your strengths, or you may like to burn a coloured candle associated with another zodiac sign to empower yourself with the strengths of that sign. You may decide to use the strength, determination and wisdom of Scorpio the scorpion  before an important business meeting.

advice for smol new witches

im writing this bc @cinnamon-starlight and i were talking and i wanted to offer something that wasnt ridiculously incoherent and babbling

THINGS I WISH I HAD KNOWN BEFORE I GOT INTO WITCHCRAFT

all witchcraft is valid. don’t shit on people’s methods. any way you want to witch is beautiful and wonderful. absolutely anything can be magic if you want it to be.

that doesn’t mean you can take whatever the hell you want. don’t take things from closed cultures if you aren’t in the culture. hellenic gods? you’re chill. “smudging kits” from urban outfitters? no. don’t do it.

your meanings are your meanings. someone else might see a plant as one way, but that doesn’t make it the best way for you. witchcraft is personal. don’t let other people make your decisions.

be safe. don’t eat anything unless you’re 100% sure it is safe. don’t use magic instead of medicine. just don’t. mundane solutions are actually great! do your research before doing things, and make sure you understand how to protect yourself with wards before you do spirit work, curses, astral projection, etc.

don’t leave rationality behind. this is important. just because there might be something ghostly doesn’t mean there is. do not begin to see omens everywhere. don’t trust your life to a pendulum.

witchcraft is not a Super Serious Thing. it can be! but it doesn’t have to be. it can be casual. you can use pop culture. you don’t need special supplies or a whole room for rituals (though there’s nothing wrong with either of those!) don’t feel like you’re not a “real witch” because you aren’t constantly talking about astrological transits.

have fun. do things you want to do. learn cool stuff. meet other witches. if one of them is rude tell me so i can go kick their ass. this should be a nice and supportive community for people doing something they care about.

witches, pagans, and wiccans are not the same thing. witches do magic, pagans follow pagan religions, and wiccans follow wicca, a form of paganism.

don’t be afraid to be told you’re wrong. let people explain things. just be sure that they aren’t covering up your opinions, namely those meanings i talked about. suggestions are good.

learn learn learn. it doesn’t happen overnight. everyone continues learning. keep learning. more learning. yessss that learning. but if at any point you don’t enjoy learning about something? you probably should stop studying it and go try something else instead. look at number seven.

now go out and witch! i just know you’ll blow them all away and i am so happy you’ve decided to be a witch! which, by the way, is a gender neutral term.

Spiritual Block

We’ve all been there. You want to do something, you want to write something, you want to make something… But you can’t. You can’t feel it. You can’t see it. You can’t hear it. You just feel disconnected and anxious.  I get a lot of asks from people who ask how to reconnect with gods, spirits, and their craft. They claim things have gone cold, gone quiet, gone silent. So here is a small list of my own suggestions to help with feeling this way.

Get Out

Spiritual Block

Now a lot of practices aren’t nature based, so I’m going to word this a bit differently than I would if it applied solely to me.

Get out of your everyday space. The space you sleep, you eat, you work. Go for a hike, go see a move, go to a cafe, go to a library, go down the road and just listen to the sounds around you. We isolate ourselves through routine and sometimes we put up walls without realizing it. Look at details, explore, investigate, question. Remember you are more than just a 9-5 job. Remember you are more than just the book you read on warding magic or the overwhelming schoolwork that has been draining your inspiration.

Regroup

Look to what inspires you. Movies, artwork, other practices or crafts and allow yourself time to look through those things. Do not hold yourself to them, or compare yourself to them but rather think about what inspires you about them. What aspects do you admire? Can you incorporate those into your own practices? Can you change them to suit your own style? What can you add to make them your own, and in doing so make them something more to you?

Shuffle a deck of cards and just do a reading. Flip through a book and just read a page. Listen to a song or a playlist and skip around. Find small elements that you can use to build something bigger. Allow yourself space to write, to draw, to record these things however you can. They don’t need to be organized and they don’t need to be “proper” unless of course you’re into that. Just get it down for later when you can look it over and make sense of it all (if there is sense to make).

Fake It

The best way to get over a block is to just keep going. After you’ve gone out and regrouped yourself just take another crack at it. Redo shrines or altars. Reorganize bookshelves and chests of materials. Check dates of herbs and cleanse crystals. Water and cull your plants. Now just do it. Don’t need anything yourself? Look to the many people in this world who need a hand. Do a spell for those who are hungry, those who are scared, those who are hurting. Or likewise do a spell against those who are greedy, those who are suffocating and killing, those who are hindering and disrupting.  Do a spell for your own land, your own home, your friends and family members (some people will warn against doing magic without permission but I’ll leave that choice to you). Do a spell for yourself. Clean yourself. Inspire yourself. Harness passion and dedication. Bathe in it. Sing to your gods or your spirits or if you’ve none sing to the spirits who have passed.  Turn up the music and dance. Dance for those fighting for clean water, for those fighting for their own land, for those fighting to put food on the table, for those who feel broken and wronged and desperate. It doesn’t have to be any one person or any specific people. It is still valid and is still worth doing.

Enjoy

Spiritual Block

Do what you enjoy. At the end of the day why pursue something if you aren’t enjoying it?

I mean this in a light sense. A lot of people chose this path for other reasons and many have made vows and promises but ultimately why stay if you aren’t enjoying any aspect of this? A duty? A responsibility? Maybe. But for those of us who don’t have those don’t feel restricted and restrained.

Do what you love.

If you love making wards. Make them.

Already have enough? Make some for other people. Make some for the forest. The library. Local soup kitchens.

Like writing spells? Share them. Write as many as you like. Like constructing rituals? Leaving offerings? Writing poems? Simply being around herbs and crystals and bones? Do that. Surround yourself.

There doesn’t always have to be a reason. Or be a need. You can just do. Don’t let your mind overthink something that is in essence just an action.

For me, witchcraft is an impulse and is sporadic. I do it when I feel I should. And I have found you do not need a reason to do it. I hope you can shake those cobwebs from your head and pursue what you enjoy.

*(Disclaimer) Some people may feel their own craft is sacred or very strict and serious. This post is very obviously not directed towards your own particular situation. Please do not apply this post to your own craft if you don’t think it is applicable. This is a personal post of a public format being shared with the sole intention of helping those in similar situations. Curseshamers are tiresome and boring. I’ll spare everyone else the trouble, “Not everyone follows the ‘rules’ and ‘laws’ you do so don’t apply them to other people”. Lastly permission and it’s place in magic is something argued about. This isn’t the post to do that arguing on. If you want to discuss it get your soapbox out and stand on it on your own blog.
