I’m rewatching Phineas and Ferb (it’s my fav comfort show) and it’s SO full of autism. SO FULL

Ferb is autistic

Phineas is autistic and ADHD

Candace is autistic

Dr. Doofenshmirtz is autistic and ADHD and has CPTSD

Their dad is autistic

Their mom has ADHD

I will not be taking criticism. My qualifications are that I'm autistic XD

I can go into detail AND I WILL

Ferb

Nonverbal!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Non!!!!! Verbal!!!!!

In the episode where they make an animal translator Phineas talks about how Ferb has a lot of thoughts, he just can’t say them out loud

Special interest in engineering and building and such

Incredible imagination

He can’t show emotions on his face

He doesn’t respond to social cues

He and Phineas are each others special interest person

In the Aglet episode when Candace is making fun of their dad for not looking up “aglet” on the computer Phineas explains to Ferb that “removing prepositions makes it more condescending”

“The cartilaginous fibers from the bovine patella structure that gelatin’s extracted from gives it that fun, bouncy quality.”

When he does speak, it’s monotone and often a fun fact- perhaps because he doesn’t know how else to connect to people through his words

He’s nonverbal!!!!! 😄😄😄😄😄😄

Same routine every day. They do the same things at the same time (different inventions but same routine) and even have their alarms set to 7 in the summer

In the bully breakup episode he has trouble with the routine change. He tells Phineas he felt like he would scream if he couldn't build something

In the episode where they all try to figure out where their inventions go every day, at the end of the episode Candace is really upset because it disappeared and she doesn't know why. Ferb realized she's upset but isn't sure how to help so he says a science fact "Well, we were all watching it. And quantum theory states that the mere observation of an experiment changes its outcome."

He's nonverbal / semi-verbal and it makes me so happy

Phineas

Hyper verbal

Candace’s busting attempts go completely over his head

Special interest in engineering and building things

Incredible imagination

He talks over other people a lot and doesn’t notice

He and Ferb are each others special interest person

Special relationship with animals, specifically Perry

He repeats the same phrases every episode

Has trouble recognizing sarcasm

He doesn’t really have social awareness

His voice is very often monotone

He hyperfocuses on the inventions

Same routine every day. They do the same things at the same time (different inventions but same routine) and even have their alarms set to 7 in the summer

In the bully breakup episode he has trouble with the routine change. He keeps suggesting things to build to get back to their routine

But despite the routine he doesn't know what they're building until the day of because he also needs spontaneity

Candace

Has trouble focusing except when focusing on busting

Can't focus on other things when focused on busting

Special interest in busting Phineas and Ferb

Other special interest Ducky MoMo and collects items for it

Hyper verbal

Very focused on routine

In the episode where she’s sick and she tries to get Stacy to bust Phineas and Ferb, but she isn’t able to let Stacy take the lead and ends up getting out of bed when she isn’t really well enough to do the busting

VERY black and white thinking

Candace stims a lot!!!!!

She has trouble learning to drive (which is very common in neurodivergent people)

Has trouble making friends

She scripts conversations

Repeats the same phrases every day

Overanalyzes social situations because she has trouble understanding them

She’s obsessed with being cool and fitting in because she doesn’t naturally understand social cues

“I calculate that soon must mean first thing in the morning, since ‘soon’ can’t refer to a period in excess of or equal to 24 hours give or take a 59 minute cushion of time on either side of the event in question.”

Has a lot of childhood toys that she refuses to get rid of

She mentions in one episode that she feels like her room is too childish and she isn’t as mature as others her age (difference in maturity to neurotypical peers)

She doesn’t join in when her friends play with Phineas and Ferb because of her rigid thinking that she has to bust them. Even when they want her to play or hang out with them, she often doesn't realize it and can't let herself

When she reads Sherlock Holmes she copies his personality and phrases

Hyperfixated on the book series and read the whole thing in a single night

She plays every instrument that starts with B

Grilled cheese safe food

Goes into the panic room when overwhelmed or something is outside routine

Dr. Doofenshmirtz

Special interest in making evil scemes

He monologues to Perry every day about his special interest

Bad posture (common in autistic people)

Stims a lot

Repetitive thinking (inators)

Echolalia

In one episode Vanessa is trying to talk to him about something and he keeps getting distracted by echolalia and stim-speaking his words

He only interacts with animals on a regular basis and when he has to talk to people he is very socially awkward

Inattentive, forgetful, unorganized

A lot of his inators have to do with his childhood trauma

Norm the robot helps him with home tasks

Face blindness- he can’t recognize Perry unless he’s wearing his hat

Dad

Vocal stimming!

“Fossils! Bum bum bum.” (fun fact this is a vocal stim of mine!!!!!)

Special interest in antiques and gladiator movies

He has a huge collection of gladiator movies

In the lake nose monster episode he’s telling phineas and ferb stories and completely unaware of anything else happening while he’s talking (infodumping)

Hyperfixated on buying stars and buys a TON in one day

Also gives someone a star as a tip and doesn't realize why that might not be appreciated

Mom

Different interest/activity every episode

She gets hyperfixated on the activity and has trouble leaving it to come home or answer Candace's calls

Oblivious to the boys' antics

I’m gonna keep coming back to update this as I rewatch so it will eventually be the Ultimate List of Autism ™.

ADHD and autism spectrum is funny in a way that isn't funny. Like hello, welcome to society, your brain is hardwired to function the most efficiently within certain parameters you'll almost never end up in. You're either so good at switching subjects that other people don't enjoy talking with you, or you're so good at sticking to the same subject that other people don't enjoy talking with you. Fuck you and good luck.

Like. Autism doesn't come with an automatic love of hearing anyone infodump about anything they love. In fact sometimes it comes with the opposite. Sometimes restricted interests are in fact restrictive enough to make anything else boring. Sometimes it's just hard to process that much speech. Doesn't mean we get to be unkind about it either but yeah. This fantasy people push of autistics having endless energy and appreciation for each other's special interests is just not realistic.

wednesday addams is really autistic, and here’s why.
by me, someone who is sooooo neurotypical and normal about fictional characters.
plus, i push my wenclair agenda
quick recap™ on autism (+ a disclaimer):

autism is a developmental disorder that generally presents in differences in social interaction, repetitive behaviors and obsessive interests.
AUTISM IS A SPECTRUM.
no two people with autism are going to have the exact same symptoms. everyone with autism presents in a different way.

disclaimer: this is just based on MY PERSONAL interpretation of the character. if you really don't want her to be autistic then you can just ignore this. and if you go misinterpreting my point that’s a you problem.
reason #1 - lack of social awareness

c’mon. it’s like, a premise of her character.
one of the hallmark traits of autism is difficulty with social interaction, which wednesday clearly represents in the show.
she is shown to dislike social interaction, more than can be chalked up to an introverted personality.
autistic people may also struggle to understand how others are feeling during a conversation; hence, why wednesday inadvertently hurts so many feelings over the course of the show.
essentially, she’s shown to have a complete lack of social understanding that leads to a few key plot points of the show.
reason #2 - obsession with all things deathly
as another key part of her character, it would not be a stretch to say that wednesday’s special interest is death, and all things that come with it.
wednesday is fascinated by death, and will gladly share relevant knowledge even though she dislikes conversation.
for example, she is shown to know a lot about poisonous plants, execution methods, crime investigation and postmortem practices such as autopsies and taxidermy.
special interests, or intense focus on specific topics, is another extremely common symptom of autism.
reason #3 - averse to touch

unfortunately for a certain someone, physical touch is really not wednesday’s thing.
hypersensitivity to (especially light) touch, which is common in autistic individuals, could be what makes wednesday hate being touched so much.
‘but wait! enid does hug her in episode 8!’
i know. we all love that scene.
the thing is, light touch is generally the problem with autistic people, and firm touch, like a strong hug (as we see in ep. 8) from a trusted person can actually provide deep compressions that can be very soothing. this serves the same purpose as a weighted blanket.
reason #4 - ‘allergic to color’

maybe wednesday is just really goth.
or maybe she has a sensitivity to bright colors that, like physical touch, can make her feel overwhelmed very easily.
autistic people can often feel overwhelmed by bright lights and colors, and prefer more neutral colors because they’re less stimulating.
this could be why wednesday prefers dark tones like black, and is so easily irritated by the bright colors that enid loves.
reason #5 - adherence to routine

people with autism tend to be very dedicated to their daily schedule, as is wednesday.
wednesday takes an hour out of every day to write her novel, and is inflexible when enid asks to spend that time doing something else.
she also dedicates nighttimes to playing her cello.
(incidentally, the fact that she plays the cello is interesting in itself - instruments such as the cello and violin are popular with neurodiverse people because the vibrations from stringed instruments can be soothing to people with sensory issues.)
reason #6 - monotone voice and limited facial expressions

as part of their differences in social interaction, autistic people often express themselves in ways that are seen as atypical.
often, they will speak in a flat or monotone voice, as wednesday does.
wednesday also rarely shows her emotions on her face. she rarely cries, laughs or smiles, which are outward expressions of emotion that might not come naturally to autistic people.
this is a symptom of autism commonly seen in autistic-coded characters, like wednesday or captain holt of brooklyn nine-nine.
reason #7 - apparent lack of empathy

a common facet of the impaired social skills that often come with autism is the inability to understand when others are hurt or upset.
(this was touched on in the first example but will be explained more in depth here.)
wednesday does come across as cold and uncaring, and often hurts others’ feelings (xavier, enid) without meaning to.
it’s clear that hurting people isn’t her intention and that she really does care, which is shown, for example, after enid leaves and when thing gets stabbed.
she is also confused by and unable to interpret emotional outbursts.
in conclusion, she’s big autistic.

+ some other interesting things / examples:

the fact that she wears all black where no one else does (eg the fencing scene) makes her stand out and could symbolically represent how a lot of autistic people feel different from others & unable to fit in.
after her iconic dance number she is shown taking a break alone in a quiet room, which could be her needing to recharge after spending time in an overwhelming environment.
no, she doesn’t participate in physical stims like hand flapping, which is a stereotypical sign of autism, but a lot of autistic people, especially girls, learn to mask their stims early on to appear ‘normal’, which takes a lot of energy. hence why wednesday spends so much time alone.

thank you all for coming to my presentation!

there’s like. there’s probably more this is just off the top of my head.

there’s transcripts in the alt text if you don’t want to squint :)
