(Or no, it was not a secret escape pod for threatened Slytherin students and no the other founders didn’t have chambers of their own.)

The subterranean Chamber of Secrets was created by Salazar Slytherin without the knowledge of his three fellow founders of Hogwarts. The Chamber was, for many centuries, believed to be a myth; however, the fact that rumours of its existence persisted for so long reveals that Slytherin spoke of its creation and that others believed him, or else had been permitted, by him, to enter.

There is no doubt that each of the four founders sought to stamp their own mark upon the school of witchcraft and wizardry that they intended would be the finest in the world. It was agreed that each would construct their own houses, for example, choosing the location of common rooms and dormitories. However, only Slytherin went further, and built what was in effect a personal, secret headquarters within the school, accessible only by himself or by those he allowed to enter.

Perhaps, when he first constructed the Chamber, Slytherin wanted no more than a place in which to instruct his students in spells of which the other three founders may have disapproved (disagreements sprung up early around the teaching of the Dark Arts). However, it is clear by the very decoration of the Chamber that by the time Slytherin finished it he had developed grandiose ideas of his own importance to the school. No other founder left behind them a gigantic statue of themselves or draped the school in emblems of their own personal powers (the snakes carved around the Chamber of Secrets being a reference to Slytherin’s powers as a Parselmouth).

What is certain is that by the time Slytherin was forced out of the school by the other three founders, he had decided that henceforth, the Chamber he had built would be the lair of a monster that he alone – or his descendants – would be able to control: a Basilisk. Moreover, only a Parselmouth would be able to enter the Chamber. This, he knew, would keep out all three founders and every other member of staff.

The existence of the Chamber was known to Slytherin’s descendants and those with whom they chose to share the information. Thus the rumour stayed alive through the centuries.

There is clear evidence that the Chamber was opened more than once between the death of Slytherin and the entrance of Tom Riddle in the twentieth century. When first created, the Chamber was accessed through a concealed trapdoor and a series of magical tunnels. However, when Hogwarts’ plumbing became more elaborate in the eighteenth century (this was a rare instance of wizards copying Muggles, because hitherto they simply relieved themselves wherever they stood, and vanished the evidence), the entrance to the Chamber was threatened, being located on the site of a proposed bathroom. The presence in school at the time of a student called Corvinus Gaunt – direct descendant of Slytherin, and antecedent of Tom Riddle – explains how the simple trapdoor was secretly protected, so that those who knew how could still access the entrance to the Chamber even after newfangled plumbing had been placed on top of it.

Whispers that a monster lived in the depths of the castle were also prevalent for centuries. Again, this is because those who could hear and speak to it were not always as discreet as they might have been: the Gaunt family could not resist boasting of their knowledge. As nobody else could hear the creature sliding beneath floorboards or, latterly, through the plumbing, they did not have many believers, and none, until Riddle dared unleash the monster on the castle.

Successive headmasters and mistresses, not to mention a number of historians, searched the castle thoroughly many times over the centuries, each time concluding that the chamber was a myth. The reason for their failure was simple: none of them was a Parselmouth.

Has anyone else come across the fan theory that the Chamber of Secrets was actually Salazar Slytherin’s safe room for all the students in case the school was attacked? And that this would make the basilisk a protector? But the legend was twisted over time after Slytherin’s falling out with the other Hogwarts founders, and so the chamber was misused by bigots like Tom Riddle.

….Because I really like that idea.

I’ve seen people talking about the founders and why they build their school near the forest. After all that forest is filled with dangerous creatures, making a less than safe environment.

Honestly I think it was different.

When the school was build over a 1000 years ago, every forest had their magical creatures. They were spread out and able to stay under the radar most of the time.

However as the years progressed, forests were cut and areas became more populated by muggles.

This lead to creatures relocating. A forest next to a school that is cloaked for muggles seems like a pretty safe place for these creatures.

Of course with very few places left for them to safely roam, the forbidden forest became somewhat more dangerous than the average forest.

Naturally I could be wrong and the founders could have secretly been a little sadistic.

Founders of hogwarts

(Sorry for mistakes its a spur of the moment thing)

Rowena looked towards her friends as they were busy discussing the plans for the safe place they had secured ready for all those with a gift of magic to learn and excel.

“What shall we call it?” Godric pondered as Salazar looked on “we haven’t decided on a name yet” helga nodded her head in agreement “the village close to it is called hogsmead, Rowena your good with these things what shall we call it?” The three turned towards her “how about hogwarts?” She suggested as their eyes brightened with enthusiasm and they turned back discussing what should they do with the magical school.

“How about moving stairs?” Salazar suggested “in case of intruders the students will know what leads where but the intruders wouldn’t” he smirked pleased with his cunning mind.

“Oh there has to be a big kitchen with plenty of food in case they get hungry” helga spoke up concern for the children shining on her motherly face.

“There should be protective spells set around with plenty of safe places” Godric advised thoughtfulness etched onto his brave face.

Rowena chimed in “a library is important as well so that they can learn” her eyes shinning with intelligence and love for the place they were building.

“They’ll be so many children” Rowena continued “where shall we put them all?” They all looked confused for a second before helga smiled and said “how about we all have a house each? And we’ll set up separate accommodation for them and a common room?” Godric grinned at the idea “and we can have competitions” he nudged Salazar teasingly who grinned back in eagerness.

“How shall we decided what house they go into?” Salazar pondered “Well we all have a certain traits maybe we can use them?” Godric suggested

“Well what are mine?” Salazar wondered as did the others.

“Well you’re extremely cunning and ambitious Salazar your resourceful and willing. Helga your loyal and kind so compassionate and motherly always there for us with dedication and patience and Godric you are brave and chivalrous always willing to jump into trouble no matter the consequences for you if it means looking after the ones you love and I’m well I have a thirst for knowledge and I have a certain wit about me I also admire creativity I’m sure these are good traits to have and to educate our soon to be students with” Rowena concluded

The others nodded in agreement “but I don’t want any of those dirty mud bloods” Salazar spoke haughtily “shut the hell up Salazar there’s nothing wrong with them” Godric roared at him furious at the thought Salazar of all people would have the nerve to look down on muggle borns like him when he had saved the mans life on multiple occasions.

Salazar had the grace to look chastised and helga ignored them both “Rowena I trust you can figure out a way to enchant something to figure out what house they are in? -Rowena nodded- and what about our symbols?” She asked the group. “How about our patronouses?” Salazar suggested watching Rowena scribble furiously on a piece of parchment. As everyone nodded their agreement helga once again spoke up “and what are they?” She asked parchment and quill at the ready “Snake” “Lion” “Eagle” “Good, good and mine is a badger” she noted that down “I’ll get started on the crest and motto what colours do you want?”

“Silver and green” “Red and gold” “Blue and bronze” “And I’ll have black and yellow” she started doodling on a different piece of parchment “why don’t you boys plan the layout?” She finished “since your so cunning and strategic” both men puffed up at her praise before huddling closely their argument forgotten and muttering where the best places they thought the dorms should go and such with mumbled suggestions from the other two.

And so the founders of hogwarts finalized their plans and the safe heaven was born.
