Upside-down Compositions – Pixivision

Upside-down Compositions – Pixivision

Upside-down Compositions – pixivision

When you see a picture with a person upside-down, reality might be broken somehow. Maybe the room is constructed upside-down. Maybe a character isn’t falling downwards for some reason. It’s probably just a reflection anyway. I unsubscribed from dozens of my RSS feeds until I could clear my 2,500-item RSS backlog. One of the survivors is pixivision, formerly pixiv Spotlight.

Illustrations where characters are upside-down or where the background is inverted are called upside-down compositions. There’s no doubt about the fact that you’re gonna be curious about these extraordinary compositions, and will wonder “what exactly is portrayed here?”. These compositions have a light, carefree feeling to them, and will make you want to float along with the characters in them.

This time we collected a number of upside-down compositions, that will make your head turn (or you can just flip your smartphone or PC screen!). Enjoy!

Yes, I'm spelling pixiv with a lowercase P now. And just like last time I posted a pixivision article (then called pixiv Spotlight), I'm presenting this image the way it appears in my RSS feed, or at least how it used to before the format changed a little bit. I have no idea what this illustration's title translates to. Clicking the image will take you to the pixivision post.

Spirited Play

Spirited Play

The local arcades here recently got some exposure in the Columbus Dispatch. 16-Bit started a movement, and now a bunch of new arcades are popping up around town. Once I get to play at all of them, I’ll rank them in a fighting game tier list right here.

When Benjamin Morgan pitched his idea for an arcade to investors, the particulars of his upscale game plan didn’t quite click. “Their response was: ‘So, you’re opening a Chuck E. Cheese?’?” said Morgan, 29. Not exactly. His Old North Arcade is an adults-only hangout north of Ohio State University stocked with 30 vintage titles and 20 craft-beer taps. The venue targets nerd-chic enthusiasts of both Missile Command and microbrews. Call it Arcade 2.0.

In other local news, Columbus Retro League’s Chris Bidwell is playing in the Nintendo World Championships 2015 in Los Angeles. Watch him beat down a bunch of YouTubers this Sunday.

Katrina Yu – Witching Activities

Katrina Yu – Witching Activities

When foraging for /r/FloatingIsFun content, sometimes I find something with a special mass appeal. Katrina Yu is a crazy talented photomanipulation artist that loves levitation. This gallery on Bored Panda features her as a witch going about her daily life. There’s plenty more from her on Reddit, Behance, Flickr, Tumblr, Instagram, and Redbubble.

Have you ever wondered what witches do on their ordinary days? I like to think that they’re always there, living among us and witnessing the world’s ordinary miracles. So this for Halloween, I imagined a daily life of a witch and tried to recreate it through my work.

Shirakaba – Chiptune Hell

Shirakaba – Chiptune Hell

Chiptune Hell is what I wish my room looked like. The desktop is filled with retro gaming gear I’d have to get at Warp Zone or Ohayocon’s dealer’s room. Is that a CRT TV with a built-in Super Famicom?

I’m trying a few new things with this post. Jetpack is now cross-posting to my rarely-used Twitter and Google+ as well as Facebook and the usual RSS feed. Even if none of those things reach you, you can now subscribe by email in the sidebar. (Can I even do that on Tumblr? That was a nice feature in Jetpack...)

I’ve also introduced tags and tagged up all my previous posts Tumblr-style. If you want to see all the music posts, other posts that have too many links, my original content, or an RSS feed of just the pixiv posts, you can get that now.

The artist's web site links right to the full-size image, I guess it's probably OK if I do the same here. Wow, this post is so meta it hurts.

Did You Know Gaming? – Star Fox

(The original post on my Wordpress blog had five Did You Know Gaming? entries in the same post. When porting to Tumblr, I decided to give each reblog its own post since that's the way Tumblr seems to work. I might change this later.)

30-Day Video Game Music Challenge (Super Hard Mode) Day 11: Puzzle game music From Tetris Effect (PS4, 2018)

Multiplayer modes are coming, but will they use the VR environments and keysounded music that made this the best classic Tetris?

Masahiro Ikariko – Theme of Solid Snake

30-Day Video Game Music Challenge (Super Hard Mode) Day 3: 8-Bit music From Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (MSX2 + MSX-AUDIO, July 20, 1990)

Happy 30th anniversary to Metal Gear 2! Not to be confused with Metal Gear Solid 2, though this is where Metal Gear Solid’s famous sneaking mechanics came from.

PAX South 2017 – Puyo Puyo Tetris Tournament Finals

Puyo Puyo Tetris‘s Swap mode is really good! It’s 25 seconds of Tetris, then 25 seconds of Puyo Puyo, back and forth until someone loses one of the games. It’s like chessboxing. At PAX South 2017, I put my Tetris stacking up against Puyo master heavenchai in this intense final match. Watch for the twists!

Edit: Here’s another upload that used the replays I saved during the second and third games. I forgot to save the first game’s replay; sorry!

Ludum Dare #28 Is On!

Ludum Dare #28 is on!

I’ve entered this weekend’s Ludum Dare competition! Sure, it’s been two weeks since my last post here, but it’s been a full year since my last game compo. They announce a theme Friday night and you have 48 hours to make a game with that theme. I competed in LD #23 and LD #25 using Game Maker 7 and I’m pretty happy with those games, but this time I’m changing it up and using HTML5.

The theme for LD #28 is “You Only Get One.” I don’t know what I’m making yet, but I know I want to use HTML5’s Local Storage to make sure you don’t get another “one” by reloading the game. I need to test if my HTML5 Local Storage, Canvas, and Audio methods work on all of my target browsers, so here’s a quick demo. What you type into it gets stored in your browser’s local storage and doesn’t get sent to our servers. Check back here Sunday night and I’ll post the finished product.

(In the original WordPress post, I embedded my HTML5 Test here. Tumblr doesn’t support HTML5 canvases in posts. That makes me sad.)

Canvas For Pebble
Canvas For Pebble

Canvas for Pebble

UPDATE: I made another Canvas screen called Wallpaper Watchface. Go get that one instead. It’s better.

Wearable devices are the next big thing in tech. I’ve jumped on the bandwagon with a Pebble, and I want to develop for it. On Android, Canvas for Pebble lets you quickly make watchfaces that nicely display the time, date, weather, and your phone’s unread message and missed call counts. I took a few hours and made a watchface I like that displays seconds, and you can have it too.

If you want to try on the Dr. Mo Day 1 watchface, you’ll need a Pebble running  firmware 2.0 beta and Canvas for Pebble 2.0 beta. These should still work when Pebble 2.0 and Canvas for Pebble 2.0 are released. Once that’s installed, visit this post on your phone and click the version you want below.

Dr. Mo Day 1 Imperial Dr. Mo Day 1 Metric

Ever notice how almost every watch ad has the time set to 10:10? Analog watches look better that way, but I'm not so sure about digital watches. It's a lot harder to fake the time on a cell phone.

Lagwagon – May 16

Most of what I know about punk rock came from the Tony Hawk games. I’ve been listening to punk on SiriusXM and Spotify and I keep recognizing songs from Tony Hawk games. This one’s from THPS2. That one’s from Underground 2. That one’s from Downhill Jam. I didn’t realize that these songs were icons in the wider punk rock community, to the point that May 16 is now “Lagwagon Day“. Is it like 20, November for Bemani fans?
