In 1970, my mother's family adopted an intellectually disabled man named Horace. Horace was 56, and had been in an institution since 1921.

My uncle, who was 19, was working as an orderly at the institution where Horace lived. He only stayed a few months as the abuse he witnessed was too much for him. He had become friends with Horace and told him "I'll come back for you."

Horace replied "They all say that."

By that Christmas, Horace lived with my uncle and his family. My grandparents did the official adoption. Horace had never seen a Christmas tree, and that was his first real Christmas.

Horace died in 2010, at the age of 96. He laid down for a nap and just slipped away.

At least two generations of children grew up with him. He felt immortal to us. He loved Hot Wheels, pizza, cartoons and to talk to the portrait of my grandparents as he sat in his rocking chair.

He knew everyone's birthday. He loved unconditionally.

He had scars on his back from the institutions. If you asked him about that place, his face would screw up and he'd say "oh, it was a bad place. Bad place."

And for 40 years, he was safe, loved, and happy. He loved us in return.

No point to sharing this. But I still miss his laugh as he held a conversation with a portrait, whispering about his day to the people who had helped rescue him.

It gets worse when you don't even know what it is!

Nice to know what the alphabet is actually used for!

NATO Standard Phonetic Alphabet,

The phonetic alphabet was developed as a way to spell things out over radio communications that may be less then ideal, I.E. a lot of static or weak signal. All the words were chosen because they have a distinct sound that is easy to pick out. Military and police communications use the phonetic alphabet heavily and can be helpful to know for talking over CB’s or FRS (walky talky) radios.

Was wishing there was a positivity post for original fiction writers since I see so many about how fanfic writers are doing so much for their communities even when they're not actively writing, and then I thought:

Be the change you want to see in the world.

So this is a positivity post for the writers out here who are working very hard on stories with no established community. Who can't talk about their blorbos and plot lines and brainstorming to anyone and expect them to know what any of it means. Who don't have much to share publicly, but are hoping they will one day.

You're doing a lot of hard work, and I recognize and appreciate what you're putting into the world, even when you're resting.

So, unfortunately, I don't have visuals of the uniforms at the moment, but I can describe them well enough until i get visuals.

Some context: im giving y'all the uniforms for the Ojalana Empire, since that is the main setting for my story. Since the rulers of the Ojalana Empire are more paranoid than is strictly healthy, and the Empire is not currently at war, most soldiers are stationed in or around the capitol-Jackal Quartz- so their uniforms are less combat uniforms and more formal/dress uniforms.

All of that out of the way, I'll start from the top down.

The top begins wit a simple black undershirt with puffed sleeves and cuffs that close with gold buttons. Layered on top of this is a waistcoat with a turtleneck. This waistcoat is also boned all the way around with slim bones made from stripped feather quills. The waistcoat is gold with 13 black fabric buttons.

The bottoms of the uniform are knee length black shorts that are built like slacks, with pockets in the normal position and of normal construction. These are paired with black and gold riding boots with red laces.

Where the uniforms really shine is in how they distinguish between different ranks of the military. Different ranks are distinguished by tie on skirts or capes of different colors and embroidered with patterns chosen by the wearer. The tie-on skirts are built like half aprons, just more full.

There are 3 main ranks of the military:

Pawns, which have sky blue skirts/capes with gold embroidery. These are the shortest skirts/capes

Knights, which have rich maroon skirts/capes with silver embroidery these are a bit longer than the pawn skirt/capes

Rooks, which have white skirts/capes with silver embroidery. These are the longest skirt/capes.

The military is incredibly fastidious, to the point where a single wrinkle can get you dress coded

so i mean what better symbolic representation of fascism than to have their uniforms actively repress everything about their species that helps them thrive?? (i do not have a very solid grasp on what fascism is and use it as a buzzword about anything i dislike)

the uniforms of the HRA might be fine for like a human, but for beefolk (you know, the majority of the HRA) they were incredibly uncomfortable and sometimes even physically damaging.

well, it's a shame that I took this long to come up with 5 things that didn't make me sound like a braggart, but here we go:

So, I read this and went down a bit of a research rabbit hole, and these are the articles that I thought would be the most helpful/ interesting/ compelling.

I looked into @i-am-a-dragon-dragon suggestion of Esme Wijun Wang's book The Collected Schizophrenias, and while I couldn't find a (legal) place to download it for free, I did find this interview that Esme did with PBS about her history with her diagnosis.

This old NYTimes article is more of an overview/case study about a man with an unspecified Schizoid disorder. I found it really compelling because it does have a happy ending so to speak

I know this is something of a long shot, but I feel like of all the Tumblr users I know of, you’re the most likely to have an answer.

Recently, I was diagnosed with szpd (Schizoid Personality Disorder), which explains a decent chunk of my life struggles.

Do you have any stories, advice, or resources that you can share with me?

I actually know very little about SZPD or related disorders, so I'm going to turn this out to the floor to see if someone has recommended reading for both of us.
