For as long as George could remember, he’d seen clips of the New York event. That was the one everyone talked about, the one everyone considered the real New Years, and most of the time he’d slept through it entirely, already five hours past midnight in London. The novelty of getting to brag to his American friends that he was in the future paled in comparison to the feeling that he was missing out on celebrating the holiday in real time with everyone. Seeing the time on his phone match the time on the news felt like another moment of realization, another milestone that proved he was here.

“Yeah, s’okay.” What else can George say? He can’t demand Dream stay and keep him company, stay and fix him. It’s his own fault, not applying for the visa early enough, as much as he hates to admit it. The tears are back, and he bites his lower lip hard to keep them in. He can’t cry in front of Dream, he can’t.

Dream sounds so confident when he says, “Next year we’ll be together.” George admires his confidence, he wishes he could share it.

It feels sort of dumb, the way George is watching Dream now, instead of the fireworks. He wonders faintly if Dream can see him out of his peripheral, taking in every inch of the blond and the way he looks: wide eyes, chapped lips, all so perfectly Dream.

And he watches those chapped lips part, breathing the softest wisps of air to life with seven simple words.

”I think I’m in love with you.”

“Eurgh, Please say that’s what I think it is?” Deceit grumbled walking into the living room. 

Patton was baking happily in the kitchen while Remus and Virgil were watching various spooky films on TV, noses only slightly wrinkled where Deceit’s is fully scrunched up.

“Pumpkin spice. He finished fruitcakes half an hour ago.” Virgil groused, knowing he shared the dislike for what Patton insisted were the flavours of the season. Last year he’d eaten more meals with the dark sides than the light after Patton got into his autumn baking. At least winter had apples and cranberries to break up the relentless spices and dried fruit.

“Would he flavour a dead body like that? I could kill Roman to find out!” Remus suggested, tugging Deceit to try and make him join them.
