I have seen many people critique how Donna Tartt ends novels, particularly The Secret History and The Goldfinch.

But the thing is, you’re being told snippets, moments and memories of a person’s life - it’s not a story that can end fully resolved or mysteriously. Tartt writes about someone who might exist, a character so realistic that it’s unbelievable how complex they are.

That isn’t a story you can end, not in any satisfying way, it only ends when there isn’t much left to say.

Thinking about the interpretation that The Goldfinch represents Theo's heart and Popchyk represents Boris's heart.

In relation, thinking about:

Theo thinking he had The Goldfinch - kept it shut away because he was scared, but it was with Boris all along

Theo taking out The Goldfinch, but only in Vegas

Boris stealing The Goldfinch

Boris losing The Goldfinch, but doing everything in his power to get it back

Theo taking Popchyk with him to NY

Theo freaking out because people might think he's gay because of Popchyk

Theo forgetting about Popchyk after he found out Boris stole The Goldfinch, but immediately freaking out when he realizes that Popchyk is gone

Boris having a good time with Popchyk, but Theo being the one who remembers to give Popchyk water

just imagine. you're 15 you're high of your ass on god knows what your mom died in a terrorist attack you're suffering from trauma your dad just died, he never loved you, and you're running away and you're in love with your bestfriend and he kisses you and you know he wont come with you.
