I know one person who started phd without master's but that's in computer science and he already had a research startup running independently. he had a med degree already and his research is about using ML in medicine, so he was granted a "special permission" to start a phd. the guy is a very hard-working genius
now when it comes to math, one of my friends claimed that it is possible to start phd after bsc if someone graduates magna cum laude or something. I never heard of that before and it sounds insane, so I asked my advisor about it and he never heard of that either lol moreover he said that it's a stupid idea unless someone already has a few publications
afaik in the US the undergraduate degree takes 4 years and phd takes 5, it's like a mix of masters and the actual phd, so I guess it evens itself out
okay this might sound stupid to a lot of you but I thought you need a masters degree before you can do a PhD. so weird to me seeing 22 year olds doing a PhD after a bachelors degree. I don't know where I got this idea but I'm having a hard time rearranging my world view around this, even though this is so inconsequential thing to be wrong about xd
Thinking about how when my oldest brother took Japanese classes his professor was like your pronunciation is really good π but you need to watch movies that aren't about the Yakuza because you sound like a criminal

neglected this place very much, would like to start posting again
may I start with what's new
the last semester was pretty much a failure, I passed everything but my grades were trash. had me seriously doubting my abilities
turns out studying comes easier when I am medicated correctly. I was diagnosed with adhd and asd, so now that I have proper meds and understand my brain a little bit better, things come easier
I fell deeply in love with algebraic topology. there was a notion of excitement about the whole concept of homotopy a few months ago, but now I am fiercely invested in making algebraic topo my field of choice
psychologically I am working on focusing more on the process than the results. it means that my goal is not "to be good at math" but rather to complete this homework, pass that test, etc., in hopes of reducing some of the stress coming from the fear of failure
my current semester is quite boring. ODEs are trivial, yet I have to sit on my ass for a few hours and learn how to solve them. analysis is difficult as always although differential forms are interesting. probability theory is just not my thing. only topology is the light in the tunnel
I don't have any specific plans for the next few days nor do I have any goals. maybe I want to study covering spaces and solve some problems concerning the fundamental group. other than that I need to complete my analysis homework and study de Rham cohomology
here are my category theory notes
gonna list my general goals, not necessarily what theorems i want to learn but rather some global "fix your life" things. gonna post about it every week to keep myself accountable
(1) wake up at 9 instead of 12. go to sleep at 1 instead of 4. if my current circadian rythm is here to stay, it's gonna be a fucking nightmare in november. first goal is to start going to sleep between 2 and 3
(2) concentrate on lectures. my focus is really bad when it comes to listening to someone. i have some interesting lectures downloaded and want to use them as training. first goal is to be able to actively listen to one for 30 minutes, then I can have a break for a zone-out
(3) get used to not checking my phone every damn 20 minutes. first goal is to have two 1-hour intervals daily of not checking it

I spent the past few days watching good doctor and doing algebra (mostly). I am trying to get used to working in the library
right now I'm at the math camp for the olympiad where I'm giving a lecture on the power of a point and radical axes
I wish I had been in a more math-oriented highschool, I feel like I missed out on so much. my school was focused on literature and philosophy, I switched to math and physics in my last year. on the one hand it's probably a nice achievement that I've managed to get into the university to study math, on the other hand I could have done so much more
I've been struggling to motivate myself to study lately, because the semester starts next week and I cannot really start anything new right now, but I also don't have anything in particular that I could continue. I decided to just read eisenbud and solve some exercises with homology
My favorite example of girl math is when David Hilbert and Albert Einstein couldn't solve how energy conservation worked in general relativity, so Hilbert asked Emmy Noether about it and she solved it for them.

i ended up not doing topo yesterday and made an animation of a lipschitz function instead:

One of my favorite thing Iβve learned about animals studies is that you should avoid using colorful leg bands when youβre banding birds because you can accidentally completely skew the data because female birds prefer males with colorful bands
Apparently if you put a red band on a male red wing blackbird his harem size can double
So like you can completely frick up the natural reproduction of a group of birds by giving a guy a bracelet so stylish that females CANNOT resist him

I had an exam yesterday, one more to go. it was the written part, so 12+ hours of solving problems, exhausting just like before. I completed all of them, but of course I am not sure if my solutions are correct, I will find out on monday. I'm proud of the progress I've made
right now I'm studying for the second part, so the theory-oriented one, I can barely focus because I've already learned those things and now I have to relearn them again
I'm trying to prove all the theorems on my own. partly to see how much I remember, partly to see how much I'm willing to improvize. as they say, if you're using too much memory then you're doing something wrong so I'm hoping to be able to come up with the proofs without memorizing anything new
my technique for studying the theory for the exam is to first test myself on how much I remember by trying to write everything down and note where I'm unsure or don't remember at all. then I read the textbooks starting from the worst topics up to the better ones. when I encounter a long complicated proof I am trying to break it down into steps and give each step a "title" or a short description
for instance, the Baer criterion featured in the photo has the following steps:
only do "extenstions on ideals to RβM β M injective"
define the poset of extenstions of A β M, A β B and a contrario suppose there is a maximal element β B
use the assumption to define an ideal and a submodule that contradicts the maximality of the extension
it is much easier to fill out the details than to remember the whole thing. this is probably the biggest skill I acquired this semester, next to downloading lecture notes pdfs of random professors I find online lmao
a friend suggested that I could make a post about tips for reading math textbooks and papers. as for papers, I don't have enough experience to give any tips, but I can share how I approach reading the books
a big news in my life is that I got a job. I will be a programmer and I start in march. at first I am going to use mostly python, but in the long run they will have me learn java. I'm excited and terrified at the same time, this semester is gonna kill me
