Muir In honor of today being John Muir’s birthday and for this year being the centennial of the National Park Service, I am proud to finally release the full version of my senior film, Muir, for you all to see. Happy birthday John and thank you for showing us all that “going to the mountains is going home.”  Muir is an animated short film that reflects on both the love and legacy of the naturalist John Muir, a man who spent much of his life promoting and advocating for the importance of the wilderness in people’s lives as well as its protection. His writings, a product of his own love and devotion to America’s wild places, eventually helped lead to the creation of the National Parks. This film pays homage to his reverence and devotion to that idea.

In his quest to understand the genius of food, he has achieved both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in nutritional science from Bastyr University, learned from world experts in medicine at the Institute for Functional Medicine, become a faculty member of the Autism Research Institute, co-authored two books, and coached numerous health care practitioners on using nutritional science as a tool in their clinical practices. Tom loves to spend time with his wife and children hiking in the mountains, harvesting wild food, and tending to the family garden. ”

Pumpkin Bread

Ingredients:

1 cup blanched almond meal

¼ cup coconut flour

2 teaspoons cinnamon

½ teaspoon ground cloves

½ teaspoon nutmeg

1 teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon baking powder

4 eggs

¼ cup maple syrup

1 cup pumpkin puree

1 tablespoon melted ghee (or coconut oil)

1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:

Combine dry ingredients. 

Beat eggs and add in.

Add remaining wet ingredients.

Grease a 9-inch loaf pan with coconut oil (or you can use cooking spray).

Bake at 375 degrees for about 40 minutes.

I’m still waiting for the day that I will actually use x² + y +8 [(x + 2y ² = a-z] + 2x ³ + (- 2z = 2. 4) + 10y - 5Z ³= k= 9 in real life…

Musician Ramón “Chunky” Sánchez Honored With National Arts Award

San Diego musician Ramón “Chunky” Sánchez was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts’ National Heritage Fellowship, one of nine awards given to folk and traditional artists in the United States.

Earlier this year, “Chunky” was honored in his hometown of San Diego, as well. As seen in this video from KPBS, Sánchez was given the title of resident artist of King-Chávez Academy in Logan Heights, where the school’s auditorium also bears his name.
