The organization absorbed its predecessor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), after the Soviet Union launched its first satellite in October 1957.A few years later, President Kennedy announced an ambitious goal for the U.S. to put a man on the moon before the end of the 1960’s. On July 20th, 1969, eleven years after NASA was created, Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the lunar surface.
