When they brought her back to the interrogation room she was confused.  She didn’t think that Moody would need anything else from her, but maybe he did.  Or maybe he was here to tell her that he tried, but that he couldn’t get her out without giving himself up.  That was something that she’d have understood.  She wasn’t worth anything, not really, not in the long run.  Her contributions to ending the war would be minimal if he managed to get her out.  She could heal, sure.  She was a great dueler.  But there were other duelers.  There were others who could manage basic healing spells.  She was nothing, but Moody was crucial.  He couldn’t give himself up, or even hint at any sort of suspicion.  Not the kind that could have him in a cell next to hers.  Maybe that was why he was coming back.  Maybe he was coming to tell her goodbye and good luck.  She’d understand.

But when she walked in and saw Alice she was confused.  The interrogation rooms were freezing, but they were so much warmer than the cells, out of the reach of the effects of the dementors.  She could think clearer the second she crossed into the room, and clearer still as the heavy metal door closed shut behind them.  When she wrapped her arms around her Dorcas didn’t react, not at first.  Alice was soft and warm and comforting – but did she deserve that?   How was she meant to accept her comfort after everything.  Why was she even here?  She should be with her baby.

But after a few moments she responded, lightly wrapping her trembling arms around her.  “I’m okay,” she said softly, her expression blank, her voice a hoarse whisper.

...

Alice squeezed hard, despite the fact that Dorcas remained limp in her arms for far too long. When she finally did reciprocate the hug, it was weak. Pulling back, Alice looked into Dorcas’ eyes, worried about what she saw there. She knew very well what the dementors did to people, had experienced it plenty of times herself when she had to come here for Auror duties, but she had never been through it like Dorcas was right now. It had been six long days that Dorcas had been stuck in here, forced to relive her worst fears and memories on a constant loop -- it was no wonder that her eyes looked deadened. Alice waved her wand to cast an extra warming charm and transfigured one of the chairs into a blanket, wrapping it around Dorcas’ shoulders. “No, you’re not okay,” she replied softly, her voice filled with understanding.

Alice sighed. “I’m not really involved in the case, so I don’t really have any updates for you except that Moody’s working hard and he’s determined to get you out of here. It was probably a major stretch even to come here, but I had to see you. I couldn’t stand the thought of you alone in here after everything.” Her eyes filled with tears, but she blinked them back, cursing the postpartum hormones. Dorcas didn’t need to see Alice cry. “They don’t have a case against you, not unless they want to take Rodolphus down too, and we know that’s not going to happen.”

She reached out to touch Dorcas’ arm, wanting her to feel human warmth and contact for at least just a little while. “I brought you something, too.” Reaching into the pocket of her robes, Alice pulled out a picture. It had been taken in happier times, at an Order meeting. In the picture were Fabian and Gideon, their arms slung around Paulie, Fabian laughing as Gideon mussed up her hair. “It’s a little risky, but I don’t think the dementors will notice that you have it, and I wanted you to have something to remind you of who you have out there waiting for you.”

Merlin, the Order really had been spending a lot of time together, but it was more out of necessity than anything else.  They were like a family of misfits, and she loved them all fiercely even if she liked to pretend that she didn’t.  “Yeah, well, if you ever see me in one of his stupid hats then you officially know that it’s a cry for help, and that I’ve officially cracked under the pressure of it all.”  Marlene laughed, even with her hair dyed blonde and the mask, she was glad that Alice recognized her.  She was shit out of luck if anyone else did, but she was hoping that the rest of the Purebloods at the party were too stupid to recognize her, even if they’d grown up together.

Clapping her hands together, Marlene rubbed them together a few times for dramatic effect, “Great, stay right here”, she demanded, making off in search of a flute of sparkling juice.  It didn’t take her long to find a house elf willing to help her, and she sang the elves praises even though their enslavement had always made her really uncomfortable.  Returning back at Alice’s side, she handed over the flute with a small bow.  It may not have been the best idea to talk to her for too long, but then again, they were supposed to be blending in.  Alice had been sent an invitation, you couldn’t blend more than that.

Giving Alice a little two fingered salute, Marlene nodded her understanding as Alice seemed to echo her very thoughts from only a moment ago.  “Roger that, capitan.”  There were probably a few others in attendance she’d have to avoid, some distant cousins that had seen her with every hair colour under the sun, but she wasn’t too worried.  “I promise I won’t linger too long, but how are you feeling?”  She couldn’t imagine trying to do all of this pregnant, and a flash of love and admiration for Alice rocked through her.

Alice laughed at the mental picture of Marlene wearing one of Moody’s hats, a very amusing image. “You know, we might just have to get you one of those. I think you could really pull it off,” she teased, knowing that Marlene wouldn’t be caught dead in one of them. Glancing over at where Moody stood under one of the hats in question, Alice shook her head. “I don’t think that I will ever understand why he wears one of those. Doesn’t he know anything about American culture? He’s as far from a real cowboy as anyone could be.” Shrugging, Alice looked back to Marlene.

Letting out a laugh as her young friend took off on a hunt for something to scandalize the masses with, Alice leaned back against the wall, allowing herself to rest some of her weight on it for the time being. Marlene was back in a flash, handing over the flute. Taking it, Alice raised it up, tipping it towards Marlene. “Ah, my savior,” she laughed, taking a sip. “I’ll have to drink it slowly so that I can maximize the chance to horrify the mothers.”

Alice waved her off. “Ah, don’t worry too much, I don’t think you’ll blow my cover,” she said, taking another small sip. Considering the question, she shrugged. “Tired, obviously, and wishing that Frank were back from that stupid mission, but overall good.” She lowered her voice so as not to be overheard by anyone lingering nearby. “I do have to say that I’m a little more nervous than usual tonight. If I know my cousin like I think I do, she won’t take kindly to intruders on her celebration, so if anyone gets caught it could turn nasty.”

Fabian thought himself quite lucky to have an abundance of nephews and a niece - having to be apart from them was one of the worst parts of participating in the war. Sending Molly and Arthur into hiding had been no easy decision, an an even harder one to stick by after the loss of Gideon, but Fabian stood by the fact that it was the right thing for all of them. He’d felt a mixture of warm delight and cold terror when Alice had first told him that she and Frank were expecting a child. It was such a terrifying world to bring a baby into, but the idea of his friends with a child - the thought of the person they would raise - it overshadowed any of his doubt and concern.

He’d been later than he liked coming over, but maybe it was a good thing. They could have their space as a trio for the time being until he couldn’t stand it anymore and he was knocking a little impatiently, unable to help but match the wide grin on Frank’s face when he answered. Fabian felt a bit more hesitant the closer to the room he got, but any apprehension was dismissed as Alice welcomed him in, and he sat down with her and took the baby with ease.

He was perfect, of course, Fabian felt his mouth open a bit in awe. Long, dark lashes, and a shock of dark hair peeking out from the bundle he was wrapped up in. “Wow,” He said breathlessly, tearing his eyes away from the baby to look at Alice, unable to stop from welling up. He had a godson. Not the first. He had the twins. But that didn’t make this one any less dear to him and he carefully sat back against the headboard beside Alice. “He’s perfect, we can always dye his hair later,” He tossed her a grin before his eyes went back to his godson, “Have you picked a name?”

...

Alice beamed as she watched Fabian take Neville so tenderly, grateful that her son would have such a model in his life. Over the years of working together in the Order, Fabian and Gideon had become like brothers to her. She was the youngest in her family, so they had become the younger brothers she had always wanted to have, the ones to tease her and prank her and inspire her to be the best woman she could be. The loss of Gideon had cut through like a knife, especially in knowing that he would never be around to meet the child who had been growing within her, but it had only brought Fabian closer.

With all of that, it was only natural that Fabian be the godfather, and Alice was glad that Frank had felt the same way. She knew that if anything were to happen to her and Frank (a possibility that was more likely under the circumstances than she’d want to admit), one of their family would probably raise Neville, but Fabian would always be there to teach him all the things they wouldn’t be able to. To know that her son would have someone like that in her life was a great treasure.

Alice followed his gaze to the little bundle, her heart full at the sight of her son. He really was perfect, so much so that she’d kick Fabian’s ass if he ever convinced Neville to dye his hair red. Looking up to meet Frank’s gaze before turning back to Fabian, she gave him a soft smile. “Yes, we’ve known for a little while what we wanted to name him, and we think it suits him perfectly. Neville Gideon Longbottom.”
