How commercialized is it? How do businesses and/or charities try to take advantage of it?

When and how did it originate? How well do people know its origins?

Do people sing songs or tell stories based on it?

What is often considered the best part of the holiday? The worst?

How has the way it is celebrated changed over time? Is there friction between generations because of this?

Something people don’t understand about child abuse

One of the things that I really hate is that people don’t understand that survivors act differently and respond to their traumas in different ways.

I’m a survivor of csa and so is my friend. Her trauma made her extremely hypersexual while I could literally cry if someone even touched me.

My bf is a survivor of csa, I can talk for hours about my trauma if I felt safe enough while he NEVER brings it up.

A friend of mine is a survivor of emotional abuse and so am I. Her trauma made her angry while mine made me soft and defenseless.

My bf remembers every little detail about his trauma, while I repressed most of my childhood and traumas.

There’s no special “criteria” that you should fill in order to be a “valid” survivor, and there’s no specific way you should act if you were abused.

People respond to their traumas differently and it’s okay, your abuse is STILL valid no matter how you respond to it.

victims of abuse be like, this person has now made me cry myself to sleep about 30 times, i have flashbacks of things they’ve done and said to me, they know how to hit me right in my worst insecurity and guilt so i feel horrible for days and months, their comments make me feel worthless and like i shouldn’t even be alive, and being around them makes me feel small and meaningless and sometimes suicidal but maybe that’s just me, maybe they’re not abusive? i have to give them benefit of the doubt, what if i’m not justified to kick them out of my life?

there’s still a couple hours left of thanksgiving, so i’m gonna use that time to say this:

- thanksgiving is actually a relatively new holiday!

- it does not date back to the early 1600s with the pilgrims and the indians or whatever you were taught in kindergarten

- a feast did occur around that time, and a few native americans might have been in attendance, but that was likely nothing to do with giving thanks and celebrating cultural unity

- the first actual “thanksgiving” didn’t actually occur until the middle of the american civil war when good ol’ honest abe wanted to try to unite americans and give thanks for what we still had

- and the practice stuck

- the pilgrims and indians colonizers and natives shtick didn’t take the stage until the early 20th century when a group of white guys from new england wanted to tie the already established holiday in with a much earlier historical event to try to show some kind of romanticized version of a cultural connection between white new englanders and native americans

- take from that what you will, but to me, i think we should abandon all “historical and cultural significance” bullshit when celebrating thanksgiving. teach your kids what really happened. don’t give them some romanticized story about how the indians liked us and we liked them so we helped each other. in time, tell them about the abuse. tell them about the death. tell them about the centuries of pain. let them know the truth about how their nation was built.

- i’m not saying drop the holiday altogether (columbus day, yes, by all means, please get rid of that one…thanksgiving, maybe not…maybe). keep the food and the time with family and the “giving thanks for what we have” aspect. but toss out all notions of that false history so that we might move forward.

Technically, she was known as Diego Rivera’s partner – an exotic eccentric. Her own work, while selling in her final decade, was often overshadowed by her Bohemian reputation, and her dressing in traditional Mexican costume. She could not live off her art until late in life.By 1953, such was her declining physical state that for her first Mexican solo show, her four poster bed was taken from her house to the gallery. Kahlo arrived by ambulance and was transferred from the ambulance to a stretcher to her bed.

She died in 1954, and her work as an artist was left to languish until it was rediscovered in the 1970s by art historians and political activists. As you know, she is now a worldwide household name. Quite a life-after-death.

Why You Should Be Listening To Yungblud

I’ve def seen a lot of posts like this going around already which warms my heart, so I figured I’d hop in with my own recommendation for Yungblud, AKA Dominic Harrison, AKA The LOML

It’s music with a message. I know that has been getting more popular these days- which is fantastic- but Dominic has such a uniquely blunt, bold way of stating what he thinks in his songs, reminiscent of the spirit of older punk acts. It’s something that’s really hard to find and really inspiring.

If you want really good examples of that, check out his songs Tin Pan Boy (Calling out gentrification), King Charles (A criticism of capitalist culture), Polygraph Eyes (About r*pe culture), and Machine Gun (F*ck The NRA) (self-explanatory)

He’s only 20, and already has such a clear image of his goals and messages and is making such a big impact like!!! Fuck!!

His style is so unique? Dominic has stated before that he’s inspired heavily by both rock music and rap, and that really shows in his style. If you haven’t heard him before, it’s a sort of mix between hip-hop and punk rock, which sounds weird as fuck but works so well, trust me

“I fell in love simultaneously with hip-hop and rock and roll music because I believe they come from the same soul.They represent something that’s more than the music, there’s an attitude, and they say things.”

He’s just,,, such a genuinely nice and open guy. He’s always so genuine and kind with his fans, in a way that goes above and beyond a lot of artists today.

For example, he refuses to do meet and greets, because, quote, “I will never make someone pay to meet me”. Instead, he makes a point of going out before every show and meeting everyone in line.

“I don’t want to tell anybody what to think, because who the fuck am I to tell people what to think? But I just want to encourage people, tell them they’re empowered and they can think and express themselves in a way they think it’s right. All you can ever be is yourself.”

He is completely open about his own mental health- he mentions his severe ADHD often, and his song Kill Somebody is an extremely intimate self-referential piece exploring his self-loathing and anxiety.

He has so much fucking stage energy. It’s insane. 

This includes, but is not limited to:

That one time he completely snapped his ankle in the middle of a show, and then proceeded to finish the show with the broken ankle, and continue with the rest of his tour, half in a wheelchair and half on crutches

Regularly making out with his guitarist (Adam Warrington) in the middle of songs?

He’s just, so unafraid to be himself and say what he thinks, and it’s really such an infectiously positive and great energy
