Day 9 (12 In Base 7) Of Writing My Novel Again

Happy Pokemon Day!

I've been playing a lot of Pokemon (GO!, FireRed, and Ruby specifically), so I decided that, in honor of Pokemon day, it would be fun to imagine my ocs as gym leaders or champions!

Yessei: Dark type gym leader, Elite 4

If you can't tell, I think Yessei's team would frustrate an entire generation of players lol.

Something about Yessei's arc just screams dark-type, despite how positive she can be about it.

Stardust (Kalinua): Steel-type gym leader, 5th gym

L. 35 Gholdengo

Just to make this team a bit of a nuisance, I feel like Kalinua's Magneton has the ability Sturdy, preventing you from knocking it out in one hit.

Kalinua's military background just radiates steel-type.

Hota: Psychic-type gym leader, 3rd gym

L. 20 Gothita

L. 20 Solosis

L. 25 Hatenna

Since Hota's gym is the third gym, it shouldn't be too hard. One dark-type kinda sweeps this whole team: you could sweep with a larvitar, lol.

C'mon, Hota literally is psychic.

Iziser: Fairy-type gym leader, 4th gym

L. 30 Dachsbun

Not a super hard gym, either. Any steel-type sweps here.

Fairy type seems the most appropriate. After all, it is the new king of Pokemon types, lol. That being said, I like the idea that Izi would hate that he loves these Pokemon so much, lol. He would be good friends with all of them.

Day 42 (1:15) of rewriting my novel

Today, I wrote Izi's address to the city of Tolftorrijv.

Sidenote: I realized that all my translations for place names are super inconsistent. Tolftorrijv, for example, is named in Ipol, but Ir Nouzonif is named in Classical Zispoel. Zenée is (probably) named in Zeneth? Then Odapir, Atepsi, Ytos, and Itaush are all named in Classical Zispoel, too.

Anyways, one of Izi's character traits is that, despite being relatively shy and stage-scared, he's still very charismatic and popular with most Zenestians. I suspect he'd be a major political force in the chaos that is post-novel canon.

Sidenote 2: I realized that, in post-novel canon (actually, during the duration of Part 5, too, which includes the aftermath of the fall of Ir Nouzonif) Izi doesn't have to relinquish control of the Coalition's armies, due to some weird wording in the Coalition's founding document. Would this potentially lead to a united Zenesto-Odapirian macro-state? Possibly? That's a tale for another day, probably.

Hey, I wanted to share some conlang news with you all. A friend of mine named Jake Penny just released a video describing their creation of a new conlang—Pankashku—for the movie Madame Web.

Now if you've actually seen Madame Web (unlikely, I know), you may recall not hearing a conlang in it at all. This is because the actual Pankashku dialogue that Jake translated for the film was cut in its entirety, and Jake was not credited.

As a professional conlanger, I can tell you this does happen, and it always sucks, but it especially sucks when it happens with your first and only job. Jake isn't alone this. Bill Welden created a conlang for the movie Noah, and it, too, was cut and Bill wasn't credited. Both were paid, and, of course, the contract states that your work will be used at the company's discretion (which includes not at all), so it wasn't like they were taken advantage of, but when your work isn't used and you're not credited it means no one hears about you, and industry word of mouth doesn't spread to get you future work. It really, really sucks, given that there are so few opportunities for conlang artists to be compensated for their work.

That is why I'm sharing this here! If you're interested, please give it a watch, but if not, please reblog it around, if you would. A lot of work goes into creating a language, and the least we can hope is that our work will be heard/seen and appreciated.

Day 37 (1:10) of Rewriting my novel

Today I mostly just want to share these crazy Low Zeneth translations:

Baan fijsesê bv hijfen ijnvn ijfo ilatsifio.

This phrase is used at a coffee shop and means "what can I do for you?" My literal translation looks like this:

what IMPF.PRES PRON.1ST.INF.SNG can do up 2ND.FOR.PL

In a more normie-friendly way:

what I could do up you?

It's worth ilatsifio is a suppletive form of "dv/dvrvt" ([də̃, ˈdə̃.rə̃t] or in phonemic notation: /də̃, ˈdə̃.rə̃t/). Like Spanish "usted" < "tu merced," ilatsifio was an old word for "teacher."

Anyways, what's interesting about this is the imperfective-simple present split here, marked with auxiliary verbs. This sentence is marked in the imperfective present because the speaker (barista) is unsure if she can actually help the listener (Izi.)

Low Zeneth, though its verbs only have reduplicative morphology, distinguishes between the present, past, and future tenses; the simple, perfective, habitual, and imperfective aspects; and one modality.

The syntax is even more cursed, especially for a question (like this one.) That's a story for another day.

OC Lore Excerpt

I got the brilliant idea for this short excerpt after listening to one of my favorite songs.

This excerpt is a piece of Aito’s lore, where he lost someone he loved dearly due to his lack of acceptance for himself.

Edit note: This specific excerpt is set in 19th century England (Aito is hundreds of years old) (that’s a whole other piece of lore but whatever)

WARNING: THIS EXCERPT CONTAINS SEXUAL THEMES.

“Do you love me?”

It was morning, and the sun peeked through the drawn curtains onto his tanned face and reflected in his eyes, making them shine like a swirled caramel. I sat on the edge of the bed, in my nude, and he laid behind me with his cheek propped on his hand and the sheets covering his lower body.

I looked at him, a mild visage of bewilderment on my face. I gave a scoff as I stood and grabbed my shirt off the nearby chair. “I just had sex with you. Why wouldn’t I?”

I felt his fingers trace down my spine and stop above my rear, then he placed his hand on my lower back. I shivered as I began buttoning my white shirt.

“I don’t know. You just felt…distant the whole time,” he said softly. He tugged at the back of my shirt, and I turned to face him after I picked up my tie.

“How so?” I asked, looking down at him as I straightened the black tie around my neck. 

He slipped the covers off himself and sat off the edge of the bed in front of me. My eyes traced his figure as he looked up. He ran his hands up the sides of my thighs and stopped at my hips, massaging them. “You just looked…apathetic the whole time. As if you weren’t enjoying it.” His eyes would flit up my body, and I inhaled sharply as he ran his hands down my front. I swallowed hard and slipped my trembling fingers into his messy black hair, although gingerly.

His hands rested on the backs of my thighs as he looked up at me again, a faint, pained expression on his face. His hands dropped and clasped in his lap as he pressed his forehead into my stomach. “That. You’re hesitant. Why?”

I stared down at him, then dropped my hands as well. I felt a vise grip my chest, and I opened my mouth to speak, then closed it. After a moment, he raised his head and eyed at me expectantly. I exhaled deeply and closed my eyes. “I…I don’t know.”

I did know. But I hated that I knew. I knew it was because I still couldn’t fully approve of all the love I wanted to give.

I opened my eyes, and his expression was one of unconvinced hurt.

Gently, he placed his hands on my hips and pushed me a step back. He stood and tilted his head up at me, his voice breaking. “You hurt me so. You can’t even say you love me back.”

My breath hitched in my throat, and I stared at him silently. I felt my eyes begin to sting and gloss over.

“Cry for me,” he challenged, although it came out more as a quiet, choked beg.

I blinked away my tears.

Anyways, here's a cool conlang (Kját-ra Khí) translation of a scene in my story:

Yése, gjêw sa mèrnrún’ rwek ga? Yessei, is your daughter gone?

Gìnger tan’ sa rwéng… I feel for you…

rjě sêr ta-ra, I understand you.

San’ nweng da, You are hard-working

san’ vèr áp da. You are the witch.

Nrekkháp zásorn’ sêr, nga ga? You’re cursed by Zasor, right?

Nga tan’ sêr. I am not you.

Gjêw tan’ sêr, I have been you,

rwek san’ têr. you will be me

Nga-phâi sa-gjo jeśú, Your path is not easy

Dàk-phâi. but it is virtuous.

Gwók sêr wjék khjàk-na. You will err and move on many times.

Dàkmèr tan’ sêr, Zàkgrí tan’ sêr. I believe in you, and I love you.

I'll probably post a grammar for this conlang in a later post, because it's easily one of my most fleshed-out. I only have about 200 words, and my goal is to get to 2,000, before I'll call it "done."
