I'm crying Yuki broke the piece of chalk for heršš
okay so I was watching fruits basket and kyo and yukiās interaction at one specific scene really reminded me of something and I couldnāt think of it until it came to me: they remind me of todoroki and bakugo
kyo: Whatāre you looking at?!
yuki: Nothing.
kyo: You were looking at me!
yuki: Youāre in front of me.
tell me iām wrong
Yuki Sohma would like watching Succession but he would be shaking the entire time.
I feel like Fruits Basket had a missed opportunity to write a great arc for Yuki instead of him ending up with Machi. And I LOVE Machi and their romance is really cute but I didn't feel satisfied with that ending for Yuki.
When I first watched Fruits Basket I was sure that Yuki was supposed to be queer-coded and his arc about self acceptance and love was him coming out of the closet.
The reason for that is because of the way Yuki is constantly presented and the way he reacts to other people.
Yuki always gets mad at Kyo for calling him "girly boy" or "pretty boy".
He tries to put up at tough persona to try to appear more masculine.
He has a fanclub with both girls AND boys crushing on him.
Whenever he "flirts" with Tohru it would come off as awkward (I know it's because he considers her as his mom figure but still!!! And yet he has some unspoken rizz when it comes to flirting with guys tho)
Even his dislike of Ayame and not wanting to be like him was kinda him not wanting to come out of the closet (Ayame also gets a last minute love interest to make him more hetero. I thought he was definitely not straight)
It just made sense to me this was going to be his arc. Especially since Fruits Basket is sooo good at depicting emotions. I thought Yuki's arc was him overcoming his hatred of that part of himself and essentially coming out of the darkness that Akito had made him live in.
When the Student council members were introduced I thought Kakeru was going to be both a foil AND a love interest for Yuki. They just had that dynamic and chemistry that made it seem like Kakeru would change Yuki and help him understand his true self and feelings. I thought Machi was the quiet/ weird side character that would have a similar role as Kimi (comedic).
Then the whole Machi x Yuki happened and I was proven wrong. I didn't hate it but....Kakeru and Yuki just had so much growth in their friendship, I couldn't help but ship them.
I would have been happy with even a Bi-Panic moment for Yuki with Kakeru and Machi (who are both half-siblings)
Yuki just had the perfect personality and backstory for a good coming out arc but it never came to be.
(Ps: I am NOT hating Machi and Yuki's relationship. It's just that Fruits Basket had many opportunities to have gay characters but didn't commit to it)
Me watching Fruits Basket:
What I thought it would be about: Oh it's a typical shoujo anime with two pretty boys falling in love with the main girl. I can watch it and be relaxed. And they turn into animals! Haha, fun.
What it was: Trauma, PTSD, Parental neglect, isolation, self loathing, self depreciation, depression, physical abuse, mental abuse, emotional abuse, psychological abuse, guilt, regret, grief, loss, heartbreak.
Now I need therapy.
(PS: as a girl who loves Girly media and Shoujo manga. I am so happy that this is a Shoujo that subverts a lot of people's expectations and makes you understand that Shoujo/Josei are NOT all the same as well as depict such a good story about familial trauma which is something we don't usually get.
I wish we could get more Shoujo/Josei anime each season š„²)
everytime i think of fruits basket i get a tight feeling in my chest. it's such a beautiful story of overcoming abuse and healing. the sohma family suffered so much, especially kyo, yuki, hatori, and rin but they never allowed it to change them into terrible people.
yuki's development is one of my favorite parts of the show. because of akito's abuse, he was always scared to be his true self. He felt like he had to be perfect and never made genuine connections, but he was finally able to break free from that thinking and find his own path.
kyo and tohru's story made such an impact on my life. kyo suffered with his guilt and feeling like an outcast his whole life while tohru had to grow up quickly putting aside her own feelings for her mother's sake. they were able to heal each other and eventually fell in love. kyo's story, in particular, makes me cry to this day. he was a boy who couldn't help what he was; he wanted to be loved and valued, and it's only until tohru honda comes into the picture that he can finally feel worthy of love.
fruits basket is incredibly heartbreaking while also beautiful. kyo, tohru, and yuki will always be my favorite characters, and i will always hold fruits basket close to my heart!
i've been missing fruits basket so much recently. it really was such an amazing shoujo with so many layers to it. i miss kyo, tohru, yuki, rin, and haru so much. especially the trio...i really grew to become too attached to kyo, tohru, & yuki. it was such an emotional journey. kyo's storyline broke my heart. the slowburn was done so well. but also, the character development throughout the show, especially with yuki, was my favorite. the characters overcame their family trauma to get their happy ending...i just miss them so much.

The chalk scene, I know it has been talked into the ground already, but I just want to talk about one aspect that has been on my mind. A great thing about this moment is that Yuki is also providing Machi with a good way to deal with her impulses. Before this, at the start of the episode and in previous moments, weāve seen Machi totally destroy a whole box of chalk or a classroom.
But here, Yuki just breaks one piece of chalk in half, and it is enough for Machi to calm down. We some other examples of this as well. I saw another post pointing out how YukiĀ āMachi-ifiedā her room for her (he didnāt fix the broken window, just put some tape over it, he put her books in an disorganized - organized fashion, etc.). So, by doing small things like this, Yuki provides Machi with examples of how she can manage her impulses without having to go to the extreme of totally destroying something. That way, she can manage her impluses on her own, without Yuki *needing* to be there to help her. Because of little things like this, Machi can now help herself.
I just love that. <3
Reminder that this is one of the most romantic scenes in fiction
they're the same picture, i won't be taking any arguments š

What can I say? I have no words. It was so heart wrenching, yet it held that spark of hope... It was just like Yuki's kindness- like a Candle.
We also get the insight to Akito's past. I loved that sweet scene where Shigure was comforting Akito. It was just so loving.
Yuki has always been trying to move forward and open up. To see him do that latently gives me the courage (yuki, if you get me) to follow him. I'm glad to see him move forward, and slowly but steadily open that lid.
In here, Akito says "My Yuki", I get this feeling of double meaning (as Yuki can be both the person or 'courage') and so it makes that line even more powerful. It makes me want to unravel more of their past and the mystery that lingers around Sohmas.
In all, this has now become my favourite Fruits Basket episode ever. Let's wait and see if it can be replaced in the future.
It was such a beautiful scene
āThe lingering chilly wind after the rain clears tells that winter is on its way. But the warmth in my chest proves that the light surely burns. Though itās so tiny that it might go out with a slight puff of air, it surely burns.ā
This is so beautiful....truly...
Fruit Basket (2019) EP 3 Candle analogy quote~ āØ
Tohru & Yuki moment where Tohru explains to him what what kindness is based on her Mum's words and describes Yuki's kindness is like a candle šÆļø
So true. I am so glad Yuki and Machi ended up together. They are totally meant for each other. And Mutsuki is just so sincere in loving his parents... I love them.
One thing I really, really love about Yuki and Machi is how they normalise being messy.
Often in fictional works, whenever we see a characterās room, itās always tidy, cute, and styled in an aestheticly pleasing way that reflects a characterās personality. And whilst Iām sure that there are many people actually like this, for a lot of us, this is an impossible standard, and it can really feel like youāre doing something wrong when your personal spaces donāt look anything like the beautiful ones often presented in media.
Speaking as someone who struggles with depression (and minor hoarding issues), most days Iām not in the right mental space and canāt really muster the energy to clean, and I always feel extremely guilty and frustrated when I see the clutter around me, because to me itās a representation of my incompetence and inability to function. So it actually does mean something when Takaya-sensei says through her characters that, whilst you shouldnāt let your messiness become a safety hazard, that a little bit of clutter and disarray is ok, even good.
So when I see Machi, who canāt maintain a clean room because of her mental health, I feel seen. When I see Yuki, whoās messiness isnāt presented as a character flaw, but rather, just a part of him and something that may even bring comfort to others, I feel relieved. When I see Mutsuki, who is actually proud that he inherited his parentsā habits because it brings them closer together, I feel just a little bit better about myself.
(bonus machiās beautiful room)
I am overwhelmed. And really glad that Yuuki finally got to have such a lovely family and be happy. Even Maki. I love her character. I am so glad Mutsuki is their son- well I think it should be more like, they raised him well.
But I wish them a happy life.
What a sweet chapter. Even without directly showing the old cast this series manages to say a lot about them
And here comes another Fruits Basket meme for (hopefully) your pleasure. This is my own template, blank at the end if you wanna use
Where is your fav located ? Do you have a soft spot for the hot mess(es) or do you prefer the unusually stable ones ?
The characters & ships playlist are going well too; get ready for a post about it soon 8)
Good night to you all in the meantime !
Hello there ! As promised, here's the start of my fruits basket meme crusade
I'll prob do more serious posts about it too (I'm searching a love song fitting for each couple specifically, or just character theme songs); but in the meantime I hope some memes will still be enjoyable to you all š
(Akito here stands as her character before chara-development & atonement obviously)
Some of these are not just based on vibes but actually canon and that was fun to notice blblbl
