wip from one of many environment studies where i'm trying to introduce characters and make things actually work together nicely
working on müller's design idk what i'm doing but we're getting somewhere
one test page still requires a minimum of a two hour research on great war german pistols and how you load them *sigh*
Historical funfact! The person who Made best prosthetics for veterans was a woman, and the guy who did first restorative plastic surgery on their faces also did gender affirming surgery for trans people
thank you for mentioning this topic, anon!! anna coleman ladd's work is an extremely interesting research ground i got to explore a while back, however i'll have to dig down the surgery rabbit hole, as this was not known to me
sidetopic is that i did a painting with the face casts last year which is actually the reason i'm going to my first physiotherapy appointment for my chronic wrist pain tomorrow lmao
hahah test page go brrrrr
dumbass field cook guy
i don't know i feel like i will subconsciously make every male background character look like someone out of a british propaganda caricature
first one of many character studies to come
wip from a style exercise
as a horror fan, i think perhaps the most exciting thing i have to work on regarding the comic is definitely the horror-esc aspects of it - the research is certainly disgusting, but i find the subject of depicting death and decay in art oddly fascinating, having everything to do with taking all the images from the text and making them real(the first scene from the visitation to kemmerich where paul imagines his decaying corpse in the grave with his nails and hair still growing lives in my head rent free so the only way to get rid of it is to make y'all suffer too sorry guys)
good news people!!
my mental health is not shit anymore, so you might as well start expecting more activity around the comic. i am slowly starting to pick it up again, and although it's very difficult, i feel a bit better already
(style exercise, officer guy is from westfront 1918)
y'all seem to vibe with the majority of the trad art i've shared, here's a bit of what i was doing back in 2022
Sebastian! This is a redraw of an older piece from 2022
Og image under the cut
it's a flying circus and bro's the main attraction
y'all know what to do
Martyrs of the Sky Chapter 3 — Part 3
these are fun have one more
happy holidays everyone, stay safe <3
concept portraits of albert kropp
i read somewhere random that his earlobe gets shot off in chapter five and i swear didn't see it anywhere in the book but it was a cool creative liberty to take with his design, i think i'm keeping it for a little more character
otto dix and some of my favourite pieces of his; definitely had a blast drawing him :)
pieces from top left to bottom right:
Totentanz anno 17 (Höhe Toter Mann)/ Dance of death 1917 (Dead man's hill), 1924

Mutter mit Kind/Mother with child, 1921
Selbstbildnis/Self-portrait, 1913
i aim to view historical events and topics objectively, openly, and dispassionately.
my main project is based on an anti-war novel, the publishing of which caused the author to flee his country, escaping punishment by the regime.
MY FIELDS OF INTEREST IN REGARD TO HISTORICAL RESEARCH DO NOT AND NEVER WILL INFLUENCE MY BELIEFS IN ANY WAY. research and engagement with historical topics of any kind, as well as their portrayal in my work IS OF PURELY FACTUAL ORIGIN. imposing or promoting any kind of doctrine or radical political views is completely out of the question.
therefore, I WILL NOT TOLERATE PEOPLE WITH SICK BELIEFS AND/OR WEIRD FETISHES. i ask everyone who's into re1chblr and any other of their equvalents (including those which apply to ww1), to NOT interract with my posts or follow my account. for those who already have, i advise you to leave willingly. you will be blocked unless you unfollow me for good.
thank you for reading.
ig shitpost from today
all quiet 1930 appreciation is something you dont see everyday and thats sad
couple sketches from when i watched aqotwf back in january
i didn't appreciate the last AQOTWF adaptation from a storytelling point of view, but that movie's visuals are the core inspiration for my project and the reason i started thinking about it altogether.
here's a gouache study i did approximately one month before starting to work on the comic book (so probably january or february of this year)
i think i'm going on hiatus for a bit, things are not working out at all and it's just frustrating at this point. i'm not satisfied with the state at which i am right now and i don't see progress. i hope to start getting back into it in about a week, but i'll see what i can do.
anyways here's a sketch of paul until you hear from me again
for those who've read all quiet, do you think the part where they meet the french women is important to the story and therefore necessary to include in an adaptation?
evacuated civilians
had a lot of fun with this one but i also hated drawing the skirts :'v
some concept art from the very very beginning of this project (oldest being the im westen nichts neues poster) from when i had planned to make it traditionally. these are only sketches, but i actually have some more with ink, which i can not upload with these because of the post limit :/
all of these were made between late february-early march and april
also sorry for the bad quality of the photos, digital has its benefits ig, but let me know if you'd like to see more
those guys look like they just ended an awkward small talk session with a "yeah man totally" and now neither of them knows what to say
