Boys Will Be Bugs

Shinichiro sighs and looks around, searching for an empty classroom. Letting his friends meet him at his school was already a mistake, since the principal isn’t very friendly towards people from other schools. If anyone snitches to the principal, he’s dead. His grandfather won’t let him live this down and on top of that he’ll get detention. Wakasa, Benkei and Akashi surely make other’s heads turn towards them, because of their scary aura. The fact that they’re well known delinquents doesn’t make it any better. Shinichiro glances through a little window on a door and the classroom seems empty. They walk into it and he let’s out a sigh, feeling relieved.

The guys sit down on a few chairs that were in the classroom and start talking about gang business. Though the eldest Sano’s joy was short lived. The classroom door opens and you walk in, holding your tote bag full of art supplies. With earphones on and deep in thought you don’t notice the three scary looking delinquents and their stressed leader staring at you. You put down the bag and turn around to walk towards your unfinished painting that was left in the classroom. That’s when you notice the four guys that look so out of place, it was funny. Your lips part a bit and you raise your eyebrows out of surprise.

“Uhh.. Can I help you?” You clear your throat. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you guys in the art club before. Or are you new?”

Shinichiro quickly stands up, blush covering his whole face. He was embarrassed, but also feeling shy, because he just saw the most beautiful person ever. How are you even real?

“Oh.. Sorry. I thought this club was over already and we really needed an empty classroom.” He explains, hoping you won’t turn around and walk to the principals office to snitch on him. You let out a hum.

“The art club should start in like ten or fifteen minutes.” You notice his face drop. “But the sewing club just ended twenty minutes ago and no one should be in the classroom by now.”

“Is the classroom unlocked?” Akashi asks, looking at you. The look he gave you made shivers run down your spine, but you shook it off quickly.

“Oh right.. I can give you the key. And once you guys are done with whatever, you can just bring it back to me. I can trust you, yeah?” Shinichiro quickly nods. “Okay so, when you come here to give me back the key, if I’m not the one to open the door, just tell them that you need to talk to (L/N) (Y/N).” You grab the classroom key from your bag and give it to Sano.

“How come you have your own key?” He asks.

“I go to the sewing club and most of the time I’m the last one to leave. Sometimes even hours later..” you blush a bit. “So they just gave me a key, so I can stay for however long I want.”

They say a quick thanks and leave the art club. But that wasn’t the last time they saw you. For a month straight, every Tuesday, they would walk into the classroom before art club started and you would give them the key. You even considered to make them one of their own, but quickly crossed out that thought. It wasn’t your place to do that. The teacher and principal trusted you, and you didn’t want to loose the trust.

But one day, the sewing club lasted way longer than expected. You were all alone in the art club classroom and they walked in, a bit slumped.

“Here’s your key.” Wakasa dropped it on your table. “The club isn’t over and they should be there for a few more hours.”

The guys almost walked out of the class, but before they could, you lowered the music you were listening to and let out a sigh.

“You could stay here y’know that right?” The paintbrush you were holding, was dipped into water. “I’m listening to music with earphones on. I won’t hear whatever you all are talking about. Plus I put all of my attention to painting, so no need to worry. It’ll be like I’m not even here.”

And they did stay that day. And the next week. And the next.. Slowly, but surely you all became friends. They would bring you snacks and would tell you to take a break from painting, since you would stay in one place for hours. You got to know them and they got to know you. Though when painting you would still put on your earphones and listen to whatever was playing from your playlist, as loud as possible.(sometimes they would talk so loud, you would still hear them, no matter how loud the song was. But your full attention was on painting, so you wouldn’t know exactly what they were talking about, just a few snippets here and there).

One day they walked into the classroom and it seemed like nothing was out of the ordinary. Except for Shinichiro’s hair. He ditched the hair gel. You thought it looked better that way. You were having an art block and couldn’t paint anything and on top of that, you forgot your headphones. They didn’t mind if you heard what they were talking about. Shinichiro even stood up and did a few fighting moves (they looked more like dance moves, but you didn’t want to ruin his mood by saying that) while talking about the latest fight they were in. An idea crossed your mind and you went straight to work.

A week later they barged into the classroom, and found you drinking coffee, while looking at a huge painting you were working on. That day you didn’t forget your headphones and were once again listening to music. They gave you whatever snacks they packed for you and sat down to talk. Your presence was calming for them. They had no need to come back to that classroom (Wakasa, Akashi and Benkei especially. They didn’t even go to this school. By the looks of it, they showed up to your school more than theirs), but they did. It felt cozy. They even changed up their schedule and came to that classroom after art club was over, knowing that you’ll stay there for a few more hours.

But that day you left earlier than usually. You left them the classroom key and a big envelope. They opened it as soon as you left and found portraits of them. Every single portrait had a different bug drawn on it. There was a butterfly flying around Wakasa, a bee on Sano’s nose, a dragonfly sitting on Akashi’s shoulder and a grasshopper on Benkei’s head. They furrow their brows and look at each other’s drawings. As they turn them around to see if there’s anything there, they notice handwritten notes.

“Sano Shinichiro, bees are not designed to be able to fly. I read it somewhere on a newspaper and it NEVER left my mind. But they really wanted to fly and adapted so they could. Can you imagine that?? How cool. Bees also symbolise hard work and dedication. You remind me of a bee. You work so hard for others. (I also didn’t think you’re “designed” to be a gang leader, but it seems like all is going well. I’m happy for you.) But like a bee, you need to sometimes stop and look at the pretty flowers (they suck the nectar, but I don’t think I want to see you trying to suck nectar from flowers). By that I mean, stop and look around. Life is great. Spend some time with yourself, or just go do something fun! You overwork yourself.”

“Wakasa Imaushi. Butterflies are not only beautiful, but also have mystery and symbolism. They are a metaphor representing transformation, change, hope and life. I know it was hard for you to change your ways and drop your own gang. But maybe it was time for a change? I notice how happy the guys make you. You just try not to show it, huh? Your “I’m too cool to give a fuck” face doesn’t work on me. Butterflies also remind us that life is short. So live your life to the fullest. You’re a cool dude.”

“Akashi Takeomi. To a warrior, a dragonfly tattoo represents agility, power, speed, victory, and courage. You remind me of a warrior. You’re this big scary guy (you’re not actually THAT scary..) and most people fear you. You have this strong aura around you. (You remind me of the God of war Ares. But better, because you’re a very nice guy. Thank you for always buying me drinks! I never thought I’d like that brand, because they seemed too sweet for my liking, but now I’m hooked.) Dragonflies encourage people to get rid of their doubts and live life to the fullest. You remind me of a dragonfly for some reason.”

“Arashi Keizo. Grasshoppers are interesting bugs. Their carefree life is a reminder to enjoy the pleasures of life. (I hope you’re enjoying your life, I think you’re a really great and friendly guy. Thank you for the snacks, you somehow always bring my favourite snacks?? Wizard.) Having the grasshopper as your spirit animal means that you have a lovely personality and people tend to enjoy your company. (I enjoy your company. And the other’s as well. Thank you, Sano, Akashi and Wakasa for always keeping me company. I now realise how lonely it was without you here.)”

Shinichiro starts to blush and realises you just screwed him over. The small crush he had on you, just turned into a way bigger one. They all smile and share the little notes they got with the portraits. And as they were trying to put the drawings back into the envelope, so they could safely bring them back home, they notice something written on it too.
