What comes to mind when you think of alcohol? Probably alcoholic drinks like beer or wine. But in organic chemistry alcohols are an important and versatile family of compounds. In this episode of Crash Course Organic Chemistry, we’ll use alcohols as a starting point to get other types of compounds like ethers, epoxides, and more!
Alkanes: Crash Course Organic Chemistry #6:
Alkanes are kind of the wallflowers of organic chemistry, but they still have important functions in the world around us. In this episode of Crash Course Organic Chemistry we’re building our knowledge of organic molecules by learning all about these so called couch potatoes from how they are separated from crude oil to how to use Newman projections to predict torsional strain and steric hinderance. We’ll also learn the names of some common conformers and get an introduction to cycloalkanes.
Polarity, Resonance, and Electron Pushing: Crash Course Organic Chemistry #10:
We’ve all heard the phrase “opposites attract.” It may or may not be true for people, but it’s definitely true in organic chemistry. In this episode of Crash Course Organic Chemistry, we’re learning about electronegativity, polarity, resonance structures, and resonance hybrids. We’ll practice a very important skill for this course that will help us avoid a lot of memorization in the future: electron pushing. It’ll be a lot of trial and error at first, but we all start somewhere!
The UK’s academic pipeline is failing to retain Black, Asian and other ethnic minority chemists, an analysis by the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Inclusion and Diversity team has shown. The figures are particularly stark for Black students, who are far less likely than white students to be pursuing a PhD and higher academic positions.
While the numbers of UK domiciled ethnic minority students entering chemistry degrees mirror the general population, the figures change dramatically as these students advance through academia’s career stages. At undergraduate, Asian students are around 14% of the population, dropping to 7% at postgraduate. For Black students, the drop is even more severe, from about 5% at undergraduate to just over 1% at postgraduate.
‘Beyond the PhD, the numbers absolutely diminish to the very senior levels of academia, where it is essentially barren ground for Black chemists,’ comments Robert Mokaya, who works on sustainable energy materials at the University of Nottingham. ‘When I was promoted in 2008, I was very aware that there was a lack of others like me but was unaware that I was possibly the first Black chemistry professor in the UK,’ says Mokaya. ‘My hope then was that there would be others. But I don’t know of any other appointment since then. And of course that is really very disappointing.’

Does he love the stars?
Maybe he'll love you like he loves the stars. Maybe he tells the stars about you like how he tells you about the stars. Maybe he'll remember every scar and freckle like he remembers the names of those supernovas thousands of light years away.
Good evening!
A little catch up is needed, I think! :)
I’ve been preparing for university. So far:
Tidy wardrobe 1 ✅
Tidy shelves ✅
Pack bathroom items ✅
Pack kitchen items ✅
Pack study items ✅
Pack bedroom items
Sort bedside drawers
Tidy wardrobe 2
It’s all so close now. I’m so excited. But oh wow, I didn’t realise how much stress and work goes into preparing for uni! A pat on the back to anyone also doing this right now 🙌🏻🙌🏻
How’s your summer going? When do you start school/college/sixth form/university?
All the best! 💛☺️🌼
On Friday I had my last exam, biology. Honestly, I was so pleased with it. The questions were alright, but the essay was phenomenal, and I’m so glad I finished on a high!
Well that’s it, A-levels are over. It’s a very strange sensation, but a wonderful one nonetheless.
Well done for everyone getting through exams. They were so difficult and I’m so proud of you all! ☺️💛🌷
Good morning!
To Do List:
2019 Biology Paper 1
2020 Biology Paper 1
Predicted Biology Paper 1
My biology exam is tomorrow! I’m feeling really confident because biology is my best subject, and all the practice papers are going well! 🤭
Have you got any exams coming up? 🤔
Good morning!
I’ve woken up early today. I find that waking up any time before 7 always means I have a more productive day. Whilst my days haven’t been too unproductive, they haven’t been as good as they can be, hopefully today this will finally be rectified as I feel quite good. 🤭
To Do List
2018 Physics Paper 2
2019 Physics Paper 2
2018 Biology Paper 1
2019 Biology Paper 1
2020 Biology Paper 1
Later today I’m spending some time with my friends which should be really lovely. 💕
Also, I’m planning on writing some tips on how to do well in Biology, Chemistry and Physics as I feel now I’m doing quite good at them. I hope that incoming posts are useful! 💌
Have a wonderful day! 🫶🏻🤗
Good morning! ☺️
I’m back in college today as the half term is over. These are the papers I’m hoping to get done:
2017 Physics Paper 2
2018 Physics Paper 2
2017 Biology Paper 1
2018 Biology Paper 1
2019 Biology Paper 1
I’ve finished 2017 Bio Paper 1 and got an A* so I’m very happy.
Being back inside school is definitely helping me stay focused, and I really like that I can go and talk to my teachers whenever I need (I’m going to make use of that later today!).
Have a good day! 🌞
14/100 days of productivity: Worked all day long. I did 2 DM ( long and more difficult exercice than usual ) today. My boyfriend helped me for the second and we are quite a nice team together.
Lot of work today. I spend hours on my khôle notes looking for more informations in physics books. I even continued while cooking and finished after eating but I made a pause to come back at school in the afternoon.Though, it took me so long ! I also made my engineering sciences notes during the morning classes because why not. I saved time that way. And now, 11pm, I will only begin my physics homework. I become to be late in my work. I spent too much time helping others doing their own homeworks that I forgot mine. So, I will probably work late tonight.
J-7: I bought new highlighters and highlight everything I could ! Scanning like 40 pages of book, it took so long ! And eventually learning a bit.
Hi, I from France. I study in CPGE, kind of a science class before engineering school. I love watching studyblr and bullet journal posts, and lately I wanted to make my own. I'm not really good at pretty notes, organised desk and perfect writing even if I love seeing those posts. I'm aware that there are already a lot of studyblr but I study quite a lot and I think studyblr community can be a good motivation for me. Also it's been more than a year that I'm using a bullet journal even if mine is quite simple but still helpful.
