I have always felt that David was a very "normal" name to appear in the grishaverse so Mark also being canonically in there strangely fits for me.

But it does raise the question of language in the books. So everyone in SoC is speaking Kerch (unless the book explicitly tells you otherwise) so that means the word "mark" and the name "Mark" must be the same in Kerch like they are in English. I also wonder how this joke translates into other languages when publishing the book.

(Not really relevant but I'm in the zone) The other scene that makes me think of language is near the start of the book when Jesper says about shooting the words "please forgive me" into someone's chest and someone (I think Kaz) points out that "I'm sorry" is shorter. But like... It must be shorter in Kerch too for that to be a true statement and for Kaz's joke to land.

As someone who is thinking of publishing Fantasy work I do wonder how much thought goes into wordplay in fictional languages.

just realized Wylan question of “who’s mark?” means the name Mark is like a,,, thing in the grishaverse, like that’s actual name people have. Can imagine living in a pseudo-Victorian/Edwardian world where people literally have magical powers and being named fucking Mark??? No hate to anyone who has that name but like it’s odd to think of that name in the context of the grishaverse. Like the name Marcus has existed for a long time so it’s not hard to believe the nickname could exist it’s just odd. This is like the male version of the Tiffany problem 😭

Im rewatching the Shadow and Bone tv show and I LOVE David, like he threw the literal book at Jesper, he didn’t know wether he had to raise his hand to talk to the General or not, poor David got hit in the head by Kaz :(

I love AUs where someone from our modern world is just dropped into a fantasy land, but one aspect I don’t think is explored enough is how would someone from a completely different world speak English? Like imagine you were dropped into Ravka, you wouldn’t know Ravkan and no one there would know English, so you wander into some army camp and start speaking gibberish, they would probably assume you were drunk, honestly you could probably fake being Grisha for a bit if you paid attention in science class, Ik they have guns and light but you could probably mix baking soda and vinegar and a peasant would have an aneurysm

Ok loved the funeral scene but all I could think of when people were walking up to king Emo bastard is for all of them to punch him yelling "he twitched!"

Although they didn’t go into much detail about the crows’ past, this is something I really appreciated while watching the show. Instead of straight up telling you of Kaz’s touch aversion via flashbacks, they show you through close ups of Kaz’s face and the way he interacts with others. I wasn’t crazy about how they chose to introduce the crows, but I really liked this small detail. I think it was a lot more interesting for fans than simply skipping to a flashback (we had enough meadow scenes btw).
