Ivan!
He has so much backstory
My girl
Derek Morgan/Spencer Reid, Derek Morgan & Cory Reid (OC), Spencer Reid & Cory Reid (OC)
(Song fic based on “my girl” by Elvie Shane)
Authors note/background- Spencer Reid never joins the FBI, he’s a professor at Georgetown university. Derek Morgan is still in the BAU and the BAU members do pop up.Cory is the result of a past “relationship” Spencer was in, her mother is never mentioned because she abandons Cory and Spencer right after Cory is born.He meets Derek at the coffee shop they both happen to frequent. Cory looks like her mother (it’s why she has red hair and blue eyes, although again it’s never mentioned)
She ain’t got my smile that don’t bother me a bit and she’s got somebody else’s eyes I’m seeing myself in.
The red haired, Hazel eye little girl holds tightly onto Spencer’s hand. He had explained to her (the best he could, seeing that she is only four) that he had someone he wanted her to meet.
I’m holding onto every moment god knows I’ve missed a few the day we meant I knew I had some catching up to do.
The first time they meet Cory is a little hesitant, eyeing him with a look that reminds him so much of Spencer. He’s worried for a while that she won’t like him.
“She’ll warm up to you.”
He gives her a small stuffed dog and when the night ends she hugs him before she runs off to bed.
“Told you she'd warm up to you.” Spencer remarks later that night.
“Yeah, I guess you did.” Derek agrees, kissing Spencer temple.
“Did you just admit that I was right?” The mischievous smile that works its way onto Spencer’s face is honestly terrifying.
“Yes and I’m already regretting it.”
She ain’t my blood, ain’t got my name but if she did I’d feel the same I wasn’t there for her first steps but I ain’t missed a moment yet and,
They’ve met four times when Cory decides that Derek must have hung the stars when he lets her ride on his shoulders at the carnival, something Spencer ever so careful would never do.
“Papa, I'm so tall!” She exclaims giggling wildly when Derek pretends to almost drop her.
“Derek be careful-!”
“Relax pretty boy. I’m not actually going to drop her, right Cory?”
“Mhm! Relax papa!” They both laugh at that.
By the end of the day Cory had been completely tuckered out and Derek had moved her down from his shoulder to his hip.
That ain’t ever gonna change I could never walk away yeah she’s my baby my whole world.
“Cory’s asking about you.” Spencer tells Derek over lunch. “I don’t think she understands your job.”
“You could bring her to mine tonight, Clooney’s a general giant who loves kids.”
“Sure.”
Cory falls in love with Clooney the moment she meets him, nicknaming him ‘cloon’ because she can’t pronounce Clooney and it’s too adorable to correct.
“Night night cloon night night Derek.” She mumbles that night patting Derek’s chest tiredly, a familiar small stuffed dog gripped tightly in her hand. Derek hadn’t even realised she’d brought it with her.
“She has dragged it everywhere since you left on that case two weeks ago.” Spencer murmurs with an amused smile.
“Huh.” Derek responds with a smile on his face.
She ain’t my blood but she’s my girl, Yeah she’s my girl.
He’s known Cory for seven months the first time he watches her alone for longer than an hour. Spencer was asked to give a lecture at a college in New York and her normal sitter was sick.
The day went easily, having taken her to the park and then for ice cream before retiring for the day. If you’d told him eight months ago he’d know the lyrics to just about every Disney song very soon he’d have called you crazy but… here he is.
Thumb in mouth Cory curls up with Derek her head against his shoulder. “Papa smile more.” She tells him and he’s confused. “You.” She says. “Him smile more.” And or doesn’t make much sense or maybe it doesn’t. “Good.” He doesn’t get the chance to question her because she drops off to sleep shortly after.
He carries her to the the guest bedroom that isn’t much of a guest bedroom anymore considering the toys, blue blankets and child clothes that can now be seen.
It hit me like a train the first time she called me dad (pops) in a three stick figure crayon picture with all of us holding hands.
Her mama (papa) said I understand if it’s too soon for this oh I didn’t let her (him) finish I took it to the kitchen and stuck it right on the fridge.
It's been almost a year when she goes to Derek’s house from school with a scribbled picture and bright smile. She places the picture next to Derek before running off down the hall in search of her stuffed dog and action figures.
Derek picks it up and freezes for a moment staring at the page with an unreadable expression. Spencer sees him from the corner of his eye and crosses the room looking over Derek’s shoulder.
It’s the three of them at the park, she’s standing between them holding each of their hands. That however isn’t the part that caused them to pause, it was what she’d written. They are labeled, ‘me’ , ‘papa’ , ‘pops’ the top of the page dawned with the words ‘my family’
“Oh.” Spencer breathes out. “Look I understand if…” Derek shakes his head standing up with a small smile, sticking the picture among the many others that now littered his fridge.
From that day on he’s pops.
She ain’t my blood, ain’t got my name but if she did I’d feel the same I wasn’t there for her first steps but I ain’t missed a moment yet and that ain’t ever gonna change I could never walk away,
The first time she sees him in a hospital is heartbreaking, her eyes full up with tears. “Pops.” She calls out sobbing when her comatose pops doesn’t respond.
“He’ll wake up.” Spencer says though he isn’t sure who he’s reassuring by that point.
“He was hit hard but he should wake up.” David Rossi, Derek’s team member who Spencer has come to know over the past year and two months. “Always has to play hero.” Rossi adds with a head shake before leaving the two alone.
It’s six hours later when Derek does wake up. “Spence?” He croaks out.
“You're awake! Oh thank god. Don’t you ever think about doing anything like that ever again Derek Morgan or so help me-“
“Move in with me. Both of you, move in with me.”
“What?” Spencer is dumbfounded.
“You heard me.” And Spencer almost laughs at the oddity of the situation.
“I’ll move in with you if you promise never to leave me. Us.” He motions over to where Cory is sleeping.
“Never gonna leave you.” Derek promises.
When Cory wakes she ends up crawling into the hospital bed with Derek (screw protocol) and refuses to let go of his shirt until he’s discharged four days later.
Yeah she’s my baby my whole world she ain’t by blood but she’s my girl.
The Reid’s official move in a month later, waving goodbye to their small D.C apartment with no tears shred.
“Pops. Papa.” Cory says wiggling her way between them on the couch.
“What are you doing up Angel?” Derek asks.
“Dunno.”
They laugh at the sheer honesty but don’t send her away letting her fall asleep with them. Spencer eventually carried her to bed, making sure not to forget her stuffed dog.
She’s Saturday morning cartoons.
The sound of hysterical laughter is heard throughout the house rousing Spencer from his sleep and prompting him to pad into the living room.
Derek is sitting on the couch half asleep, Cory sat on his lap intently watching ‘bubble guppies’ and petting Clooney.
Spencer smiles and if he snaps a picture, no one needs to know.
She’s hey can I sleep in your room?
Cory learns to hate when Derek leaves for cases, sometimes going as far as throwing tantrums when he tries to say goodbye but that never changes her response to him coming home. No matter how mad she was at him for leaving.
Derek comes home close to midnight and doesn’t expect to see Cory until morning but is mistaken as she’s sitting up on the couch in the living room when he enters the house. “I made the mistake of telling her that you were on your way home.” Spencer explains, which cues Cory in on Derek’s arrival.
“Pops!” She turns around standing on the couch and reaching out insistently. “Your home.”
“Hey Princess, of course I am. I always come home.” Spencer smiles fondly.
“Can I sleep with yous?” She asks looking between Derek and Spencer innocently.
“Of course you can Cory.” Spencer says walking over to kiss Derek.
“Yuck!” They both laugh loudly.
She’s bigger than the plans I ever had. She's making me a better man.
“I never thought I’d get this.” Derek tells Spencer one night.
“Hmm?” Spencer prompts wrapping himself around Derek.
“This.” He motions around. “You and Cory.”
“I thought it would always just be me and Cory.” Spencer admits. “No one wants to date a single dad who’s a college professor with a past off… expect you did.”
“You're not your past Spencer.”
“And you're not yours.” They don’t address the true meaning of the sentence instead Derek smiles, lifting a sleeping Cory into his arms and heading down the hall.
She ain’t my blood, ain’t got my name but if she did I’d feel the same I wasn’t there for her first steps but I ain’t missed a moment yet and that ain’t ever gonna change I could never walk.
The wedding is in June, they’d been together for two and a half years when they decided to get married.
Cory is the flower girl, Henry the ring barrier.
Derek’s team is there, his mother and sisters too.
Spencer mom is there, along with a few of his professor friends.
Hotch is Derek’s best man, his groomsmen and woman being Penelope and James.
Reid’s best woman is JJ, his groomsmen and woman being Emily and Rossi.
It’s a small thing really.
There’s a party afterwards.
“Papa lap.”
“Cory I’m eating.” He tells her with a stern look.
“Pops lap.”
“I’m eating too princess.” He responds. Still not deterred she pushes Derek’s arm out of the way and climbs into his lap successfully seeing as Penelope had changed her out of her suit before dinner. (She had refused a dress and neither of her fathers saw it necessary to force her into clothes she doesn’t want.) “Alright fine.” Derek huffs although there’s no heat in his voice.
“Pushover.” Spencer mummers into his wine glass ignoring the glare his husband shot him. “Cory, do you want your own plate of food?” Spencer asked and got his answer when she shook her head instead picking food off of their plates.
Yeah she’s my baby my whole world, she ain’t my blood but she’s my girl.
It’s six months later when they all sit in a family court room, their friends and family sitting on the public benches behind them.
They sign the papers in front of everyone and then the judge announces loudly, “I hereby declare Cory Reid-Morgan adopted.”
They go out for ice cream as a large group to celebrate, Cory happily running around with Jack and Henry afterwards.
When it’s time for everyone to leave Cory demands to be picked up by Derek who complies. She rests her head on his shoulder and quietly murmurs. “I love you.”
“I love you too princess.”
“To the moon and back?”
“A million times.” Spencer comes up from behind wrapping his arms around Derek's waist and resting his chin on the shoulder not occupied by Cory’s head.
“Love you Derek.”
“Love you too Spencer.”
Yeah she’s my girl.
I need to finish this boyo’s design but here’s his wip so far

✧ councilor!sevika who loves her wife and daughter more than anything in the world.
✧ councilor!sevika who moved her family out of vaun some years after joining the council.
✧ councilor!sevika who leaves her office after long days and comes home to her fourteen year old babbling about everything under the sun, and even though she wants nothing more than to lay in bed with her lovely wife and sleep for an eternity, she listens to everything her kid has to say (she might fall asleep during it though).
✧ councilor!sevika who is informed during a council meeting that a small explosive went off at the cafe her wife frequented.
✧ councilor!sevika who rushes to the hospital, enforcer in tow, giving her all the information they know.
“it looks like the explosive went off just outside the window of the establishment. not too many people were hurt, but i…”
“you what? spit it out!”
“i… well i think your wife might’ve gotten the worst of it. i think this might’ve been a targeted attack.”
✧ councilor!sevika who shows up at the hospital demanding to see her wife.
✧ councilor!sevika who damn near throws up when the doctors tell her the extent of her wife’s injuries.
“when they found her, the wall had toppled over her. there were shards of glass in her skin from the window. her eardrums were ruptured and she is concussed. her ribs are broken and one of her lungs were punctured. she also has a globe rupture in her right eye. in most cases, those are somewhat easy to fix but i’m not too sure about this one, so i want to perform a vision test when she wakes up. as for her legs…”
“what? what about her legs?”
“well, as i mentioned before, the wall fell on top of her. the rubble, it… it crushed her legs. just below her upper thigh. honestly, it’s a miracle she’s alive.”
✧ councilor!sevika who, while she waits, sends a few enforcers to watch her daughter until she can get home.
✧ councilor!sevika who sprints when she’s finally allowed to see her wife.
✧ councilor!sevika who’s heart stops and feet falter when she sees the light of her life hooked up to the countless machines, the upper right half of her face wrapped in bandages and casts on both of her arms. the hospital blanket covers her from the waist down.
✧ councilor!sevika who chokes up when her left eye flutters open and round lips part.
“… ‘vika?”
“i’m here, doll. i’m right here.”
“where… where's my baby? is she… is she alright?”
“i sent some enforcers to watch her at home, she should be just fine.”
✧ councilor!sevika who watches her wife’s face flash with several emotions.
“what do you- what do you mean? why isn’t she here? she’s not hurt?”
“wha- what do you mean? wait. was she… was she with you?”
“yes, i… i think so? i don’t… i’m not sure. sevika, where’s my baby?”
✧ councilor!sevika who storms out the room just as the enforcers she sent to her home are running down the corridor toward her looking frantic.
“we went to your home, councilor. the housekeeper said your daughter left with your wife this morning. she isn’t there.”
✧ councilor!sevika who, for the next week, balances consoling her wife and trying to let the enforcers do their job. so far, all they’ve come to her with is the obvious: this was a targeted attack, someone from vaun was responsible, and her daughter was taken from the scene.
✧ councilor!sevika who breaks a little every time she has to tell her wife that they haven’t found their little girl.
✧ councilor!sevika who eventually takes it upon herself to find her kid.
✧ councilor!sevika who rolls her eyes and glares fiercely at the other council members when they try to talk her out of it.
“councilor sevika, we understand your pain, but it is in your best interest to just wait while the enforcers handle this. finding your daughter is priority.”
“shut the hell up and listen to what i’m saying. i’m telling you this as a courtesy; i am going find the son of a bitch that took my kid and hurt my wife, and i am going to kill them.”
✧ councilor!sevika who ventures into vaun everyday, armed with nothing but a pistol, going to every bar she can find. she knows whoever is dumb enough to pull the shit they pulled is dumb enough to gloat about it in some way, shape, or form.
✧ councilor!sevika who walks into a newly renovated bar three days into her own investigating and makes eye contact with the bartender who visibly cowers at the sight of the woman. bingo.
✧ councilor!sevika who gets in the bartender’s face, demanding to know everything they know.
“someone hurt my wife and took my kid. tell me what you know.”
✧ councilor!sevika who reaches forward and grab the bartender by the collar of their shirt when they hesitate. she grabs them by the back of their head and pushes them into the bar, their head hitting the surface hard.
“now.”
“i- some woman came in. a- a couple days ago! she- she said something about finally uh- about getting her closure! said you killed her brother and- and she was gonna get her lick back! she was mumbling a lot, really drunk! i- i swear that’s it!”
“where?!”
“i don’t know! i swear i’ve told you everything i know! please!”
✧ councilor!sevika who, two days later sees a flickering light coming from a mostly abandoned building. the same building she spent most of her days.
✧ councilor!sevika who takes two steps at a time to get to silco’s office, ignoring all the memories flooding her mind.
✧ councilor!sevika who doesn’t hesitate to kick the door down just as a woman is bringing a chainsaw down on her daughter who lays tied to silco’s desk, tears and snot running down her bruised and beaten face.
✧ councilor!sevika who doesn’t even stop to think and just pulls the gun from her waistband and shoots at the woman, the bullet piercing her wrist and causing the electric tool to fall and clatter on the floor.
✧ councilor!sevika who stalks over to the woman stumbling away from the desk and grabs her by the hair on her head, dragging her to the clear space in the room.
✧ councilor!sevika who slams the woman to the ground, and stares her in the face. all she sees is the anguish that’d been on her wife’s face for the past two weeks. and then she sees the fear that was on her daughters face when she barged into the office.
✧ councilor!sevika who blacks out as she drives her fist into the woman’s face over and over and over again until she can’t hear the woman’s pleas. and then she continues to punch the woman in the face.
✧ councilor!sevika who doesn’t stop until she registers her girl crying for her mama, the woman in front of her no longer even recognizable as a person.
✧ councilor!sevika who staggers over to the desk to untie her daughter, face and fist covered in blood that didn’t belong to her.
✧ councilor!sevika who is still running on adrenaline, but immediately comes down when her daughter flinches as she approaches her.
“hey, i’m not gonna hurt you. you’re okay, i’m gonna get you home, hon. everything’s gonna be okay.”
✧ councilor!sevika who has to carry her daughter down the stairs and through vaun because she holds onto her so tightly (realistically she wouldn’t have let her walk even if she wanted to).
✧ councilor!sevika who is overcome with so many emotions as she tells her wife that their daughter is safe.
“after they make sure everything is okay, they’re gonna move you two into a recovery room together. that way i can keep an eye on both of you.”
✧ councilor!sevika who, as she holds her weeping wife, thinks about the fact that she came this close to losing everything and can’t help but cry into her wife’s shoulder.

✧ carmen was married and pregnant when she met violet for the first time.
✧ her husband, joseph, had hired a few ranch hands to help out on their in-the-middle-of-nowhere farm after their son was born.
✧ carmen didn’t interact with violet much, seeing as the farm was joseph’s territory and she focused more on the garden in her front yard.
✧ they had a routine:
“good morning, violet.”
✧ carmen would sit on her porch every morning and get some fresh air. after her youngest was born, she would do her first feeding of the day there.
“morning, doll. told ya you can call me vi.”
✧ and that was that.
✧ when violet and loris first started tending to the animals, carmen offered to prepare lunch for them. joseph they said it was unnecessary.
✧ everything was relatively simple and easy going until carmen found out joseph had cheated on her.
✧ tbh saying he cheated is putting it lightly. that man had a whole other family in the city. two girls around the same age as her sons with some woman carmen had never even heard of.
✧ the divorce was quick and easy, what with the irrefutable evidence.
✧ afterwards, the relationship between carmen and violet bloomed fairly quickly.
✧ violet and loris took carmen up on the lunch. home cooked meals on top of the paycheck? yes please!
✧ carmen’s boys spent a lot of time outside with the horses. joshua, at eight years old, had just started learning to ride. two year old charlie just liked to follow his big brother around.
✧ with joshua and charlie spending so much time with violet and uncle ‘oris, as he’d affectionately been dubbed, carmen started joining them.
✧ there was one time in particular when carmen was braiding joshua’s hair on the back of their wraparound porch. violet was rinsing her hands at the water hose when charlie toddled up to her, asking if she’d braid his hair.
“i don’t know if your mama would be okay with me messing with your hair, little man, plus i-”
“oh no, you’re fine. just wash your hands first.”
“… i’m actually not much of a braider. my sister learned, but i’m no good.”
✧ the genuine heartbreak plastered on charlie’s face felt like a punch to violet’s gut. she left work that day and asked her friend mel to teach her how to braid.
✧ almost everyday, violet could feel carmen’s deep brown eyes staring at her at some point. initially she thought she’d done something to upset her employer, but whenever she turned to catch the woman’s eye, karmen would turn away, almost hiding.
✧ and that oh, i've fucked up turned into oh, she’s totally into me.
✧ violet had always been attracted to carmen. it wasn’t just her deep brown skin or her coily hair. it wasn’t the curve of her hips or the swell of her breasts. it wasn’t even her ass.
✧ while she appreciated all of those things, it was carmen’s gentle personality that did it for violet. it was her maternal instinct. her soft voice, her laugh, even her grimace when loris let the family dog lick him in the face.
✧ as time passed, violet began to test the waters.
✧ a pet name here, a brush past her waist there. not enough to get her fired, but just enough to gauge carmen’s reaction.
✧ almost a year after carmen’s divorce, she and violet were outside drinking from a bottle of wine when the tension came to a head.
“violet, i-”
“told you to call me vi, doll.”
“… vi. i have a question.”
“shoot.”
“have you ever… been with a woman?”
✧ violet smirked.
“emotionally or physically?”
✧ carmen, thrown off guard by the vulgar implication of the question, was stuck opening and closing her mouth like a fish. at her reaction, violet laughed.
“honey, have you met me? that’s like asking does a fish need water!”
✧ carmen turned away as she felt her face heat up. the numerous pert names had been a thing for a while but they still got to her.
“so, yes then?”
“yes, carmen. i’ve been with a woman before. have you?” she could hear the smugness in violet’s voice. she shook her head no.
“do you wanna be?”
✧ carmen looked up, eyes wide. bold much?
✧ long story short, carmen ended up with a girlfriend after that.
✧ for a while, she was so stuck on the fact that she was dating someone who was working for her.
“it feels like i’m paying you to be with me, vi.”
“baby, listen to me. you and i both know what i’m being paid for. us being together doesn’t change my work schedule, and it doesn’t change my pay rate. it doesn’t change anything.”
✧ and even though it made sense logically, carmen couldn’t shake the nagging.
✧ violet’s only solution was find another job. and while it upset carmen to not get to see violet as much, she felt it was the best thing to ease her conscience.
✧ for a few months, the two women were in their honeymoon phase.
✧ one weekend, while the boys were visiting their dad and sisters (there’s three now), carmen was preparing dinner while she waited for violet to come over when she got a call from her ex husband.
“hello?”
“why the fuck is my son telling me you laying up with somebody around my kids?”
“i don’t know, but you need to watch how you talk to me-”
“nah, because you got me fucked up if you think you finna have some nigga in my kids’ face.”
“and you got me fucked up if you think you’re gonna call my phone and talk to me like you’re crazy. what i do in my house is my business, and if you must know, i’m not laying up with any nigga.”
“then who the fu… wait. you telling me you fucking on some bitch? you a dyke now?”
“joseph, i’m only saying this once. i am a grown woman living in my own house paying my own bills. you don’t get to cheat on me and have not one but two babies on me, and then criticize what i do after i leave you. i deal with you because you are my sons’ father. our relationship doesn’t go beyond that. i didn’t call you showing my ass when joshua told me that girl was living in your house or that she was having another baby because i trust you to do right by your kids. you need to trust me to do the same. now, if you would like to talk civilly about my partner’s presence around my sons, then feel free to talk to me about that. if not, you have no reason to call me unless it has to do with the wellbeing of our children,” and then she hung up.
✧ when violet showed up that night, she didn’t expect to find carmen bawling her eyes out on her couch.
✧ violet sat carmen on her lap and listened to all of her woes. personally, she had always been comfortable with who she was and if anyone had anything bad to say, fuck them. however, she understood that carmen was coming from a different place, one violet had never been in.
“there’s always gonna be someone with something to say, love. that doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong and it doesn’t mean you need to change for anyone. not your family, not your friends, not your ex, not me. only change for yourself.”
✧ after a year, violet moved in with carmen and her kids. the boys, now ten and four, were ecstatic.
“so is this like getting another mama? do we call you mama, too?”
“yay! mama vi!”
“… you boys can call me whatever you feel comfortable with.”

“hey, siri. call-” elena barely got her sentence out when her phone began to ring. she made her way to the counter and peered at her phone before answering it.
“hello?”
“hey, cariña. how are you feeling?” her husband’s soft voice came from the phone.
“i feel fine, mi amor. you know, i was actually just about to call you.”
“were you? we must be in sync,” elena could hear the smile in his voice, “i wanted to let you know i’m on my way to get the girls, and then i’ll be on the way home.”
as elena opened her mouth to respond, there was a knock at the door.
“hm, well i’ll see you when you get here. te amo, miguel,” though she spoke with pure adoration, most of elena’s attention was on the door.
“te amo, mi esposa.”
as the call came to an end, elena made her way to the door. before opening it, she pressed her ear against in an attempt to recognize a voice coming from the other side of the door.
“.. and we’re gonna be friendly and respectful, and we’re not gonna play with our web shooters, alright?”
“i know, dad. what’s taking him so long to open the door?”
“you don’t what he’s doing. that might not even be his car in the driveway, may.”
may?
“who is it?” though she had an idea of who was behind the door, elena wanted to be sure.
“oh- uh, my name is peter! i’m looking for miguel o’hara?-”
“and i’m mayday!”
taking a deep breath, elena unlocked and opened the door, leaving the door chain in place as a precautionary measure.
as she peaked through the small crack, elena looked up and saw a man. he appeared to be pushing fifty, his hair peppered with gray strands. dressed appropriately for the transitioning weather, peter had on creme colored knitted sweater and jeans. mayday had on an army green sweater dress, her wild curls slightly tamed and tied up in a ponytail.
“why are you looking for miguel?” elena had an inkling of a feeling as to why, but she wasn’t one hundred percent sure.
“well, we used to work together, ya know? and it’s been a while so i figured nothing wrong with checking in,” peter had a gentle smile on his face, but his emphasis on ‘work together’ left a nauseous feeling in elena’s stomach.
strangely enough, though, being seven months pregnant will also do that.
“are you sure you’re not here about work?”
at elena’s question, peter raised an eyebrow. after a silent minute, peter relaxed his body and gave elena a bright smile.
“he’s told you, right? about our adventures? i promise i’m only here as a friend.”
elena’s stared at the man for a short while before softly closing the door in peter and may’s face, leaving father and daughter in shock.
click!
the door opened, revealing elena’s 5’2 figure. she pulled the door back, allowing the two enough room to get inside her home.
“thank you,” peter gave the much shorter woman a kind smile, one which she returned.
as may got settled on the couch, peter took a look at all the pictures on the mantle and on the walls. as he came across a picture of miguel cradling his younger daughter for the first time, peter turned to elena.
“how long have the two of you been together?”
elena looked at the picture and smiled, vividly remembering the day she brought her little Isabella into the world.
“we met a few months after i had gabriella, so about seven years.”
at that, peter did a double take.
“wait, so gabriella isn’t his?”
“biologically, no. but miguel is the only father she’s ever known, and he’s been around since essentially the beginning,” elena got a bit defensive; though she knew he meant no harm, the way peter worded his question didn’t sit right with her.
“of course, of course. i meant no disrespect. it just shocked me because of..” peter trailed off, but elena knew what he was going to say.
“i know,” elena’s voice was soft, “he told me about her.”
peter gave the woman a soft look before moving along and stopped at a more recent picture.
“who’s this kid?”
the kid in question was a young man in his early twenties. it wasn’t his cheeky grin or the glint of mischief in his eyes that caught peter’s attention.
it was the mostly striking resemblance he saw in himself.
as elena looked at the picture she chuckled a bit. she’d have to call him later.
“actually, that’s peter. he’s an intern at miguel’s office. he babysits our girls sometimes.”
“ah, i shoulda known,” peter b. chuckled out.
the two moved over to the couch where mayday had gotten ahold of the remote and was surfing through channels before landing on disney channel.
“oh!” elena exclaimed, “i’m sorry, i just realized i never introduced myself. my name is elena.”
peter let out a hearty laugh before saying, “it’s lovely to meet you, elena.”
as he got comfortable, peter continued, “so, how’d you two meet?”
as miguel’s mini suv got closer to his home, the man’s nerves increasingly got worse. he couldn’t explain it, but something felt off to him.
“papi! i show you ‘n mami my drawing!”
at two years old, isabella was a bit of a fire cracker. the concept of an indoor voice hasn’t registered in her little mind, and she was incredibly demanding.
terrible twos, right?
through a chuckle, miguel simply responded with, “i can’t wait to see it, mi princesa.”
turning into the driveway, miguel stared at his family’s home. as he moved to gather isabella from her car seat, gabriella grabbed her bag and rushed to the front door, waiting impatiently for her dad to unlock it.
with isa in his arms, miguel walked up the driveway. in an effort to be discreet, he gently pushed gabriella out from in front of the door. if someone unfamiliar was inside their home, he’d need his kids to get as far as way as possible, as soon as possible.
with a slow turn and push, the front door was open. the first thing miguel spotted was his pretty wife, her manicured hands resting on the swelling of her belly — yet another girl.
the second was the little red head girl sitting on his couch under his throw blanket watching his telenovela.
the third was the wide smile on the face of the man standing in his living room.
ay dios mío.
“miguel, old buddy! it’s been waaaaay too long! how ya been?” completely ignoring the look of utter defeat on miguel’s face, peter walked over with arms open wide in preparation for the long awaited reunion.
“not long enough. how and why are you here?” Miguel dodged the hug, instead moving toward elena to deposit their little one reaching for her mama.
“your ears aren’t bleeding, are they, amor?” he asked with a kiss to her temple. she chuckled lightly, shaking her head no.
“peter’s been fine. i’ll take isa so you guys can catch up.”
miguel slouched on the couch while elena left with Isabella on her hip. with gabriella dragging may to her room, the two men were left alone.
“elena says she’s a stay at home,” peter spoke first, either unaware or uncaring about his friend’s dread.
“she is. peter, why are you here?”
peter took a minute to examine his friend. there was white sprinkled in his hair, which was a little longer than it was the last time they saw each other. there were light bags under his eyes, but he didn’t look tired. he looked.. content.
“believe it or not, i missed you, man. i wanted to see how you’ve been and then i found out you had a whole family and i just.. i’m happy for you.”
miguel looked at the man standing in front of him. he’d toned down the smile, but there was still joy in his expression, albeit more subtle. the crows feet were prominent on his face even without a smile there.
“… what do you wanna know that she hasn’t already told you?”
peter’s eyes shined.
“everything.”
“- and this is gabi after her first soccer game.”
miguel had pulled out the photo albums he and his wife used to document their lives together.
“wow! man, i gotta say it: for you to have this great life and all you had to do was wai-”
“wait,” miguel cut him off.
“yeah! all you had to do was-”
“no. shut up,” he was looking towards the stairs.
“… what’s wrong?” peter whispered, having no clue what triggered his closest friend.
as he stood, miguel responded, “gabi is never this quiet with company over.”
and with that, he made his way up the stairs taking two at a time, quiet yet efficient. peter wasn’t far behind.
miguel opened the door to his oldest daughter’s room. laid on the bed in the middle of the room were the two young girls stretched out every which way, completely knocked out. peter smiled as he watched the man deflate.
he went across the room to shake his daughter awake. with a groan, she sat up and promptly crawled up her father’s back, silently demanding a piggyback ride. with the girl gathered on his back, peter turned to his friend.
“well, i guess it’s time for me to get this one home to her mama. you mind?”
miguel pressed the buttons on peter’s wristband, opening the portal into what looked like may’s bedroom. as he stepped forward, miguel called out to him.
“peter.”
he turned around and raised an eyebrow, prompting the man to continue.
“it was… nice. to see you, i mean.”
“ahh, it sucks that i’ve got my girl on my back. i would’ve given you a great hug, man.”
“… get out of my house.”
by the time miguel got gabriella properly situated in her bed, put dinner away, and made it into his bedroom, it was pushing 11 o’clock at night. elena was sitting up in their bed, little isabella sprawled out at the foot asleep.
“mi amor, where are her pants?”
“i got up to go to the bathroom and when i came back, she was just standing in the bed chewing on the pants leg. she wouldn’t let me put them back on her,” elena responded, smiling softly at the little one.
miguel chuckled softly as he gathered the toddler in his arms. as she was moved, she began to whine around her pacifier.
“oh, i know, mija. we’re gonna go sleep in your pretty princess bed,” miguel cooed at her, rubbing her back.
as he paced slowly, soothing their daughter, elena smiled at her husband.
“how was your evening?”
miguel sighed. elena knew he was about say something along the lines of a complaint, but the truth was written all over his face before he even began.
“he asked so many questions, my love. And every time i would get around answering them, he’d ask a million more it felt like. and he kept saying how beautiful you are-”
“aw, that’s sweet.”
“- and obviously i know that. how else would you be pregnant right now? and he was saying how nice it is that i have this family to come home to everyday and… yeah. it was all very repetitive. i would’ve preferred to be lying down with my beautiful wife.”
elena laughed at him. even though her husband did, in fact, complain about his night, she could tell he enjoyed seeing peter.
“well now that he’s gone, there’s nothing stopping you from doing just that,” she responded to him, smiling softly and patting his side of the bed.
miguel stopped his slow pacing and looked at his wife. her face was bare of any makeup, all of her blemishes and dark spots out for him to see. she had her hair tied back in a scarf and she was wearing what she affectionately called her “granny gown.” miguel took notice of all of this.
“every time i look at you it’s like i fall in love with you over and over again.”
elena cheesed at him and replied, “hurry up and get her to bed so i can kiss you.”
it didn’t take long to get from his bedroom to the nursery. when he came back, he quickly got ready for bed so he could spoon his wife. as he crawled into bed, miguel pressed three kisses to his wife’s lips before lying down behind her and wrapping his arms around her torso, his hands caressing where the youngest o’hara slept.
“she’s gonna be a daddy’s girl, too. i can feel it,” elena called out softly. miguel hummed in thought.
“she might surprise you. maybe she’ll be under her mama all the time like gabriella was.”
“yes, and gabriella is a daddy’s girl. you’re proving my point, amor,” elena retorted as she rubbed a thumb over miguel’s hand. the man responded by pressing his lips to the woman’s neck.
“i love you, elena.”
there was so much overwhelming love in her husband’s voice that all she could do was repeat his words back to him.
as the two closed their eyes, miguel thought about what peter said to him earlier.
it is nice that I get to come home to this everyday.
