Mononoke Theory: the hexagrams= the types of Mononoke each medicine seller is tasked with exorcising.
I was doing some looking into Bagua, specifically the meanings of the Ri and Kon trigrams, for obvious reasons. And I found something quite interesting concerning the Attributes each trigram holds.
At first, I was hoping that they’d relate in some way to the personality or symbolism surrounding the medicine sellers themselves. But that didn’t seem to entirely be the case. Ri has the attributes “light-giving, humane, dependence”. The first two make sense, as he DOES bring metaphorical light (truth and understanding) by exorcising Mononoke, and he has been shown to express kindness towards the spirits that end up in these pitiable situations. But dependence? That makes…less sense.
Until I realized that Dependence is (in one way or another) a factor in the stories of all the Mononoke he’s exorcised.
Children aborted against the wishes of their mothers, the aftermath of a codependent incestuous affair, a battered woman who’s too afraid to leave the family she despises, an evil spirit desperate for the love of others, and a dead woman trying in any way she can to get the truth of her death brought to light….all of these Mononoke are spirits who were dependent on others, whether that’s their victims or the ones who wronged them. And all of them were exorcised by the wielder of the Ri sword—the sword of the dependence attribute.
Conversely, Kon’s attributes are “devoted/yielding.” Though we’ve only seen him exorcise one Mononoke so far, it was the spirit of a woman who was so devoted to her work it destroyed everything else inside of her. And since the other two movies in his trilogy also seem to be taking place in the Ooku, it seems like they will also deal with the consequences of letting your devotion to a cause destroy your personhood.
TL;DR: both Ri and Kon seem to specialize in spirits that have attributes of their respective trigram. Also, both their trigrams have associations with women: Ri is associated with the second daughter and Kon is associated with the mother.

mononoke is so funny because you have the series medicine seller who's like idgaf war veteran on the 9-5 grind and judging people in his head sexily and then you have movie medicine seller whose whole thing is poster pretty boy does unnecessary twirls and flips while hunting down enemies and ships lesbians in free time

Author note: I've been extremely hyperfixiated on him ever since I saw the new movie trailer and needed to write about him!, GN reader and just overall fluff, I do request if anyone wants one but I just don't write smut at all!. Besides that the story a fairly small drabble I made.
His long fingers loosened the knots in your hair, curls unraveling as your eyes stayed glued to the distance, he kept stroking your hair unmatting the rully mess. You felt your eyes flutter, engulfed with the sweet sensation of tranquility swallowing your body whole as you laid your head limply in his lap.
It was your routine whenever you came home; he'd stroke your hair and massage it as it lulled you off to sleep. You both didn't mind the strange relationship you’ve built as it wasn't romantic or physical but a means to feel something, anything, drawing from each other of which you both lacked. As such, you and him never delved into the intricacies of a normal relationship, you hardly even knew each other, yet, you've kept this routine for years...
His cold finger lightly brushed your exposed ear,startling you from your drifting thoughts; you looked up.
" Ho~ does this feel good?" He asked, his ash blonde hair draping down his porcelain face,his narrowed eyes twinkling in amusement as they bore into yours, already knowing the answer.
You nodded, humoring him through the dance you've both done countless times before. "Yes" you said,voice soft as a whisper, exhaustion dragging out.
He hummed in response, continuing to play with your hair as you stayed there bathing in the domesticity of it.
You and him hardly talked in moments like this for there was no reason to,his very presence was enough; but you'd be lying if you said that there weren't moments where you did have the strong urge to question the enigmatic man. Ask him all types of questions about his life,but you know he'd only deflect with words ensnared in riddles or combat your question with a sly one of his own, so, you don't, because it'll always end in fruitless futility.
You stayed there, head still laying in his lap as you felt yourself succumb to the lull of sleep. You had no desire for rest, yet it was inevitable, just as it always had been, so you curled up your body and let go, falling into a deep slumber, his hands still interlocked in your hair still brushing it out.
I finished writing a small mononoke kusuriuri/reader fic and I might post it, ever since I saw the new movie trailer my old hyperfixation on him came back and I can't stop thinking of different fics I could make about him 😭
