hey, just asking because i'm curious,
but how many people have noticed that a lot medieval fantasy maps are left-justified?
i mean i know its probably europe, but it's enough of a trope for tvtropes to have an article about it.
a lot of these are orientated with cold weather to the north and the sea to the west.
even the ones i found with ocean orientation not to the west, the cold weather is to the north.
i just thought it was interesting and wanted to share
edit: i think the only reason i noticed this is because very few maps look even vaguely like where i live in the s. hemisphere :p
cold weather is to the south and it gets hotter the further north you go
some examples i found:
middle earth - lotr
eragon
wheel of time
westoros - got (looks like britan and europe)
Every time we open a box here in the store, it reveals some kind of treasure. Today’s treasure is a map!
This is an embroidered map of Ireland, which is said to have been made in 1793. The outlines of the counties, as well as the decorative border have been stitched in what looks like chenille thread in muted colours. Smaller details such as the names and ship at the bottom have been worked in finer thread.
We love the area under the ship where the splitting fabric has been darned, it almost makes the sea look more realistic! A great example of the age of an object adding to its beauty and charm.
What treasures would you like to see from our store? With museums currently closed under UK lockdown restrictions we are missing browsing museums and galleries. If you are too, we would love to share more objects with you to help with your cultural fix! Comment below, or send us a message and we will try our best to help!

Elevated Maps
Brooklyn-based graphic designer Scott Reinhard combines contemporary land elevations with historic maps to create three-dimensional environments of a specific region, city, or state. To produce the digital maps, he pulls elevation data from the United States Geological Survey, which he then embeds with location information and merges with the original design of the old maps.
