Tropical Roadkill - Ubud, Bali 2018
Here's one for the reptile lovers out there. Our Bearded Dragon, Leonidas, eating his Valentines Day box of worms! Thank you to everyone who donated, we surpassed our goal!
These are really neat lizards!
FIVE BANDED GLIDING LIZARD Draco quinquefasciatus
Draco is a genus of agamid lizards that are also known as flying lizards, flying dragons or gliding lizards. These lizards are capable of gliding flight; their ribs and their connecting membrane may be extended to create “wings” (patagia- similar to flying squirrels), the hindlimbs are flattened and wing-like in cross-section, and a flap on the neck (the gular flag) serves as a horizontal stabilizer (the flag is sometimes used in warning to others).
Draco are arboreal insectivores.
While not capable of powered flight they often obtain lift in the course of their gliding flights. Glides as long as 60 m (200 ft) have been recorded, over which the animal loses only 10 m (33 ft) in height, which is quite some distance, considering that these lizards are only around 20 cm (7.9 in) in total length (tail included).
They are found in South Asia and Southeast Asia, and are fairly common in forests, gardens, teak plantations and shrub jungle.

Hump-nosed lizard (Lyriocephalus scutatus)
The hump-nosed lizard is a species of lizard within the agamid family, the only species in the genus Lyriocephalus. It is the largest agamid endemic to Sri Lanka and lives in dense wet zone forests. The hump-nosed lizard inhabits forests with high canopy and dense undergrowth, but it occasionally also enters home gardens. It is active during the day, when it dwells low on trees as well as on the ground. It goes higher up on trees to sleep at night. The typical threat posture is open-mouth gape, revealing the bright red lining of the oral cavity. This species is also known to feign death when picked up. Its diet comprises essentially of earthworms and also arthropods, including termites, butterflies, and moths. It is also known to feed on young shoots and buds.

Imagine if I had something really witty to say about snakes here.
Got an art prompt for me? Send me a message. I will try to get to it.

My girl is 9 months tomorow! She’s gotten so much bigger than when I got her and her patterns gotten so beautiful!
lizard out there really gonna do it
The East side of Île de la Table Ronde is the noisy side, with the motorway running on the opposite side of the river. It's also the side with the widest walking track, and it was teeming with grasshoppers! I noticed a couple had landed on my shirt and were just chilling (maybe interested in eating the fabric? I'm thinking of locusts, aren't I). @teamroquette took the photos as I was unsure how much I could move without them jumping off. Turns out they were really chill.
Other critters seen this summer include some seen at Oberkirch: bees working on flowers, that's a classic, and... some less fortunate insects.
Bonus - posted here because my sister will kill me if I post this on Instagram where she can see it: a spider hanging out by Nonnenmattweiher lake.

What's the difference between a snake and a legless lizard? One mourns for what it doesnt have

Common Five-lined Skink (Plestiodon fasciatus), taken April 25, 2025, in Georgia, US
A silly little skink! Me and this lizard spent a few minutes sitting next to each other, him catching ants and me watching. This guy was quite small, likely still young, and it was fun to watch him scuttle around, looking under leaves for little bug morsels!
Common Five-lined Skink (Plestiodon fasciatus), taken April 23, 2025, in Georgia, US
A vibrant skink running up a tree to escape me! I found so many skinks while out yesterday, this being one of them! Normally, I rarely find lizards, but they were popping out of the woodworks for whatever reason—possibly trying to feed before the evening's storm arrived? Whatever the reason, I love to see them!
Toothy Skink (Genus Plestiodon), taken April 18, 2025, in Georgia, US
A cute skink licking its lips after snacking on a tasty worm! I happened to look out the window while preparing to go outside just in time to see this lizard eating a big worm on the bank of my koi pond. After eating, it slowly slunk away into the grass. Despite there being lots of worms, this is a bit of a dangerous place to hunt, seeing as a watersnake is currently living at the pond!
I'm also in Georgia and my university has a herpetology club that does nature walks, I love seeing your renditions of the species we usually see!!
I'm glad you enjoy the little guys I find!! There are so many wonderful species here that don't get much attention because they're easy to miss. I'd love to include more herps in my selection, but I have horrible luck finding anything that isn't a toad!
Have an anole for the road, one of the few non-toad herps that I see somewhat regularly:
Green Anole (Anolis carolinensis), female, taken March 11, 2025, in Georgia, US
This warm day brought out not only a big wave of pollinators, but also my first reptile of the year! I turned my back to go inside and switch lenses for pollinator pictures and happened to hear leaves brush against each other. When I turned around, I saw the moving leaves where this little lady landed and was able to get some nice pictures before she decided she wanted back on the tree she was originally on!
Eastern Fence Lizards (Sceloporus undulatus), taken October 6, 2024, in Georgia, US
I hiked a mountain and these guys were all over the top! Before this, I'd never seen this species despite living only 20 minutes from this mountain. They must prefer the more arid, primarily pine forest as opposed to my creekside, primarily deciduous one. I've been up this mountain several times before, but I guess I never cared to look for microfauna before. Not sure how I missed these guys!
