The RG Kar Incident: DON'T CLOSE YOUR EYES TO RAPE

I’m unsure of how many non-Indians or even non-Bengalis know of this. Regardless of whether you do or do not, I would request you to reblog this post & share awareness about this. DON'T LET INJUSTICE GO UNPUNISHED.

On August 9, 2024, the body of 31-year-old post-graduate medical trainee, Dr. Moumita Debnath, was found partially naked in the seminar room of RG Kar, a hospital in Kolkata. She had just finished working a 36-hour night shift before this and, out of exhaustion, had fallen asleep while studying in the nearest seminar room on the fourth floor of the hospital.

Her family was informed beforehand that she had committed suicide, to which her mother emphasized on the fact that her daughter could never carry out such an act. On further investigation, it was found that Dr. Debnath had been raped and murdered in her sleep.

According to the Deccan Herald,

“There was bleeding from both her eyes and mouth, injuries over the face and nail. The victim was also bleeding from her private parts. She also has injuries in her belly, left leg… neck, in her right hand, ring finger and… lips. [...] “Her neck bone was also found broken. It seems that she was first strangulated and then smothered to death.”

According to Medical Dialogues,

“There were multiple hairs on the mattress and blood was soaked on the blue mattress [...]”

Later, it was found that Dr. Debnath’s glasses were shattered and her eyes were pierced with the shards of her glasses themselves.

Although one of the criminals (Sanjoy Roy) has been arrested, I am certain that there are others involved. In fact, it has been found that Sanjoy Roy, despite being an outsider, was granted access to PG Kar via personal relations with senior police officers.

The chief minister of West Bengal (despite being a woman herself) as well as members other political parties are trying, behind the scenes, to let this case fade away. Why? Oh right, it's really the privileged, upper class & upper caste sons and brothers of ministers who are behind this! No major crime can happen in a country without there being the hand of one or more influential persons, often politically involved.

Sisters and brothers, দিদিরা ও দাদারা, it would be a sin to remain silent in the face of such a crime. Our brave brothers & sisters pursuing medical practise have ceased working in their hospitals to protest against this grave crime against women, against humanity. We cannot let this injustice go unpunished! A crime against a single woman is a crime against all of us! We were born from a woman, raised by a woman—and now, when we see the honour, dignity and life of women at stake, won’t we join the andolan? Won’t we fight for what is right?

Requesting all Kolkata residents (who can) to join in at least any one of the protests mentioned below. There are provisions for elderly & disabled people. Men are invited to join us as well.

For those who want to join the Reclaim the Night protest at 11:55 p.m., please refer to this list of contact numbers (according to your region) provided by Miru Didi ( @arachneofthoughts )

Take hold of the night! We have always been told to stay wary of nighttime and the dangers, manifested in the form of cruel men, we may face. Not anymore—we must reclaim the night! How much fear is fear enough? If anyone wants to know further details and the phone numbers regarding this first event, please DM me.

Blowing the conch has always been a signal of strength. In traditional Bengali culture, it is almost always the women who blow the conch, be it in Durga Puja or the everyday pujas carried out at home. It was, and always will remain a sign of victory over evil. At 11:55 p.m., all those who cannot join the midnight assembly (the aforementioned event) can, instead, blow the conch from their own houses! Let them know you're not afraid. Let them know you've had enough. Let them know that once a revolution starts, especially one spearheaded by women, takes a long, long time to end.

[Please Note: These protests are not personally organised by me. I simply am in touch and will be attending the protest tonight.]

If you can, please do take the time to sign this petition below (courtesy of Miru Didi @arachneofthoughts) to aid our efforts:

RG Kar MCH the focal point of the Kolkata Rape and Murder Case. Only because monsters committed such a heinous crime with the Dr. Tilottoma.

Old articles are thought to show the numerous reported records which were ignored or unresolved.

--------------------------------------------------

1999:

The lone name to emerge from the shadows of 1999 was Madhusudan Sau, whose life reportedly ended in February of that year, leaving behind a veil of mystery and unanswered questions. No details have been shared or found about him, to date.

2001:

The mysterious death of fourth-year student Soumitra Biswas sparked allegations that he was murdered for attempting to expose a porn ring. Despite the arrest of a female student, Auromita Das, and police questioning members of the SFI, the case remains unresolved, with little progress made by the West Bengal Police CID.

2003:

In February 2003, two back-to-back incidents at RG Kar Medical College brought the total of suspicious deaths and suicides at the institution to four within a few years.

The cases include Arijit Datta (February 2003), who reportedly committed suicide by jumping off a hostel roof, and Praveen Gupta (February 2003), who survived a suicide attempt.

2016:

In October 2016, the decomposed body of RG Kar Medical College professor Gautam Pal, 54, was found in his locked South Dum Dum apartment. Police suspected a heart attack, as his bed was undisturbed, but blood stains, facial bruises, and the absence of a suicide note raised concerns. The contents of his stomach were preserved for poison testing.

2020:

In May 2020, 25-year-old trainee doctor Poulami Saha reportedly committed suicide by jumping from the 6th floor of the emergency building during the COVID-19 pandemic. While no suicide note was found, police indicated she had been suffering from depression. Conflicting reports suggested she may have jumped from the 11th floor, but the hospital did not confirm the suicide.

2023:

In January 2023, RG Kar Medical College student Sayan Mondal died during a trekking trip in Uttarakhand, marking a departure from previous incidents that occurred within the hospital. After reaching Brahmatal, Mondal collapsed while descending, suffering from severe breathing difficulties. He was rushed to Dewal Government Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

2023:

In August of 2023, intern Suvorojyiti Das, 23, from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, died from an apparent drug overdose. The Tala Police classified the case as 'unnatural death,' attributing it to an antidepressant overdose, and found no suicide note or evidence of foul play. Das was discovered unconscious by his family and died in the hospital’s critical care unit after being rushed there.

2023:

In September 2023, a final-year medical student accused Sandip Ghosh of ignoring a ragging complaint and threatening him to falsely claim the issue was resolved. Despite Ghosh’s transfers, he frequently returned to the hospital. The student reported enduring physical and mental abuse over three years and criticized Ghosh’s inaction and favouritism towards certain students.

...

The fact is that this fucker Sandip Ghosh initially declared her death as a 'suicide' too, but I guess the evidence were too big for him to tamper with.

There might be more unreported cases Between all these years, especially 2003-2016 which were either hidden or voices were silenced.

Shame on you TMC for standing beside this man.

I WILL GO JUST ON THE BASE TOPIC AND THAT IS ...

THOSE PIECE OF TRASHES AKA THE 8 OR 9 OR MAYBE 10 OR MAYBE MORE HAS DONE THE RAPE AND MURDER OF TILOTAMMA / ABHAYA SHOULD BE GIVEN PUNISHMENT BY BREAKING THEIR LEGS 90 DEGREE BUT A 360 DEGREE WOULD BE BETTER SO THAT THEIR PELVIC BONE BECOMES DUST, COLLERBONES COME OF OF THEIR BODY JUST LIKE FINAL DESTINATION ACCIDENTS AND THEN THE POLICE SHOULD GET OVER THEIR BODY AND WALK SO THAT THERE IS A SKULL BREAKAGE AND THEN CUT THE PENIS AND LET THEM ROT..

Bass thats all I want (actually everyone wants that)

There seems to be a lot of confusion among people (men ugh) about what women are actually demanding through protests and rallies and marches so I just thought that I would help clear some stuff up....

1. We are asking for SAFETY and NOT protection...there is a clear line of difference between these concepts.... safety means we get to go where we want , while wearing what we want and at what time we want to...be that in broad daylight or at night , wearing a miniskirt or a saree .....it means being able to live out our life to it's full potential without the fear of being brutally raped, assaulted or murdered... because we are equal to all men... We are just as capable as smart as efficient as all men ....we deserve safety because as HUMANS it is our birth right.....

But the extremely sad truth is that we are so far removed from a reality where we are equals because we have to live out our lives constantly in fight or flight mode....we have to rethink every little descision we make, from the clothes we wear to the routes we take to the company we are around to the transportation we take.... because we are always on guard that something might get us killed and wiped off the face of this earth

2. We demand that people stop saying 'not all men' because yes not all men are attackers but to a woman any man she comes across has the potential to be an attacker....whether it be her co worker or boss or uncle or friend or boyfriend or just a stranger....so women spend their lives always on guard and always vigilant and scared because it could be any day that we might get murdered....and this phrase is extremely counter intuitive and just plain stupid.... because all men might not brutally raped and kill a woman but all men benefit from the systemic rape and oppression of women....

And whenever the topic of women rape and assault are brought up it's always this pathetic gang of men saying "but men get raped tooo....why are you all complaining so much"....they fail to understand while men's rape cases are equally important....men dont understand that on a daily basis 86 cases of rape against women are filed and among those cases on 28 percent received a conviction (thats only 28 out of every 100 cases filed)......90 percent of rape cases don't even get filed because of systemic shaming of rape victims and maintaining of "honour" for he families of rape victims

3. It's crazy how the term "nirbhaya" is used in relation to women's rape cases ...because nirbhaya means one without fear ....but women constantly live in fear because the whole onus is always against us ....."what was she wearing ?" "Why was she sleeping alone?"....."what was she thinking ?" .....our society has normalised rape against women so much that it is a preconceived thought that men will rape because it's just in their biology.... to BRUTALLY MUTILATE AND DEFILE ANOTHER WOMAN ....men will be men ...it's on the women to protect themselves......that is why women always live in fear , just soaking in it and passing that fear on to our next generations because it is the only way we have known to survive .....

4. We do not want protection, as the inherent idea of "protecting a woman" stems from patriarchy ....it demotes us from being equal humans to mere possessions of men...and at its core women will only receive protection when the men can see in us their mothers or daughters or sisters .... We demand that you care about women's safety not because we see are your mothers or daughters.... But because we are your EQUALS....Not just because they see us as daughters, mothers, sisters. Not because we are doctors, astronauts, athletes. Not because we’ve won awards, invented something or excelled exceptionally in our fields. But simply because we are humans. Equal humans that deserve to feel safe because in the first page of our constitution we are promised equality...that all humans are to be treated equally despite their gender...we do not ask you to see in us some family member and reward us your protection....

5. WE DEMAND JUSTICE....we demand better policing , better lit streets , more surveillance , police that do not dismiss rape or assault cases , courts that give out convictions before witnesses are threatend or silenced , fear amongst people that use rape as a method of caste or communal discrimination or use rape in some false sense of honour, in the same way that someone would fear murder...and all of this information is readily available to politicians...they know exactly what they can do to make women feel safer but they won't since it's to much work and most politicians harbour rapists and assaulters in their own party.....

Mamta Banerjee a FEMALE chief minister says that she sees these protests as a conspiracy against her own party ...and then she goes on to say that she will give the death penalty to the rapists as some form of damage control...this is all in illusion as politicians like her know that there are 2 deterrents to a crime , the length of the punishment and most importantly the chance of actually being caught after committing a crime....it doesn't matter whether you will give a death sentence to the criminals if in 99 percent of times a rape case is filed the police get paid by the accusers , the victims get threatened into withdrawing their complaint , the court dates drag on , the prosecutors are paid off , evidence is mishandled and made to disappear. So it doesn't matter whether you will give capital punishments if you never go through the process of conviction of the criminals , it is all a lie and politicians who promise the death sentence are LIARS....

To all the men reading this all we demand is to be your EQUALS ....we demand equality in justice , in safety , in pay ....we demand to live out our lives how we want because it is our fundamental right...we DEMAND TO NOT BE PUNISHED FOR DIMPLY BEING BORN A WOMAN....
