Yes, leaving out gen fics does skew the number. But there isn’t much of a reason to assume that the distribution of nonshipping fics will be vastly different from the distribution of shipping fics, as both are written more for more popular characters. However, even if we assume every single gen fic is written about a female character, the ratio is still 1 : 803, which is less than a third of the male characters’ 1 : 2626

Even if we were to assume EVERY fic not specifically listed as being about men was about only women (which is a ridiculous assumption to make), the figures would be 1 : 1076. Which is still less than half as much as the men. See how uneven that is?

Nitpicks below:

Yes, this is the issue I’m highlighting; more fics are written and more content is made because the male characters are more popular. However, there are 2 things I have to say about this.

1) why assume people make content only for engagement? Fan content is made for the love of what you’re creating. Fandoms are born when people say, ‘hey why isn’t there any content about this? I guess I’ll have to make it myself!’ Good fan content isn’t made for attention. I encourage anyone reading this with unpopular tastes to go out and make your own content! That is how communities grow, make things because you love it, not for notes and kudos

2) it is a fixable issue. The purpose of my original post was to highlight the obvious discrepancy between male and female characters in the project sekai fandom. By noticing this behavior in ourselves, we can open our minds and improve as people. This brings me to my next addition:

This is a good point, so I want to clarify. I am NOT saying you have to be a misogynist— as in, telling women to go back to the kitchen— to favor male characters. Misogyny exists in all of us, even the most dedicated feminists, as a product of the world we live in. That’s why I encourage people to notice it. I notice it every day, I noticed it after making my original post when I realized I listed the statistics for the male characters first on instinct. We all have room to grow.

Lastly, to the rb above me; I appreciate your addition, you made some good points! please stop calling Toya/tsukasa incest. They aren’t related. It’s okay to not like the ship, I don’t like it either, so please just say that

Project sekai ship fics on AO3:

Project Sekai Ship Fics On AO3:

Ratio of # of male pjsk characters to fanfics about men (excluding gen category): 1:2626

Ratio of # of female pjsk characters to fanfics about women: 1:557

Let me say that again. For every 1 male character in project sekai, there are 2626 fics about him. For every 1 female character in project sekai, there are only 557 fics about her. Come on pjsk fandom… you should be better than that :/

(More figures & calculations below)

Number of male pjsk characters (excluding vs)*: 4

Number of female pjsk characters (excluding vs)*: 16

Total # of fics excluding gen category: 19422

3358 het fics/2 = 1679 per gender partner

% of women vs % of men in pjsk: 80% : 20%

1679+8826=10505 fics/19422=~54% of fics are about men

1679+7238=8917 fics/19422=~46% of fics are about women

*please note that if vs were included, the percentages and ratios would be the same (26 women/6 men)

If you are primarily a fan of male characters or have a male character as your fav. Ask yourself why that is. I’m guilty of this too. Most of us are guilty of this. Examine your biases and try to move past them. There is already enough misogyny in the world.
