For @creatingblackcharacters Black History Month challenge, I decided to draw Demetrius and Maru from Stardew Valley, and focus on Demetrius being a good dad ♡ Here he is encouraging a young Maru to build her love of science!
Demetrius gets a lot of hate from the online fandom, and I think that's stupid and unfair. He has flaws, sure, but so do all the other characters. Every single human being who has ever lived has good and bad traits, good and bad days. It's not fair for Black gamers to have such limited representation in the first place, and then for fans to focus only on the flaws of the Black characters who do exist when everybody else gets the benefit of the doubt makes it even more wrong.
With this piece I want to tell my Black audience that it's an honor to learn by your side as a scientist. It's an honor to learn by your side as a human! As an organism! As this strange collection of cells we all find ourselves as on this insignificant speck hurtling through the vacuum of space at incomprehensible speeds. I'm glad to be human with you, bumps and all.
