Climate Change Science is Conclusive, and Here’s What You Can Do about It

In a recent study containing over four decades of satellite data (https://www.bloomberg.com/…/climate-change-is-disrupting-th…), researchers concluded that the odds that climate change is occurring naturally without human influence are approximately 5/ 1,000,000 or 0.0005 percent.

In any other peer-reviewed scientific study this would be regarded as very convincing evidence that our climate change is anthropogenic; however, American society, in particular, allows non-scientific members of our community speak with emotionally-guided or overly-simplistic (https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/does-trump-even-know-tha…/…) rhetoric on whether or not this is science we should consider.

Whether or not scientific data is comforting to you has no bearing on whether or not the data in question is conclusive.

It is disheartening to me, as a science major heading toward graduation and a future where I hope American politics adequately represent me, to know that my fellow citizens are swayed by unwarranted, snowball-in-congress (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3E0a_60PMR8) arguments that are actually funded by people who benefit from hiding climate change evidence (https://www.scientificamerican.com/…/dark-money-funds-clim…/). Even though it may be profitable for now to pursue business practices that harm the environment and cause climate change, it will be more expensive for our society to pay for the damage done to our land in the future. We will, as a society, eventually have to pay for the citizens who need emergency treatment for asthma, illness from contaminated water and air, and heat complications. There are greater storm risks with climate change, and we, as a society, will have to pay more for emergencies that could have been prevented (https://www.researchgate.net/…/links/5566497208aeccd77735a1…). If companies are not paying for environmentally-protective practices now, society will be paying their debt in the future-- plain and simple.

Information confirming climate change is particularly disarming when one considers debts we cannot pay back. For example, irreversible changes to interspecies interactions are caused by climate change. For example, plant-pollinator interactions rely on seasonal temperatures and daylight hours to ensure that when plants are ready to be pollinated, bees are also ready to pollinate. Often plants' perception of season relies on hours of sunlight. If a plant species receives an ideal time of daylight, morphological changes occur to initiate plant flowering or fruit development. Climate change does not alter the hours of daylight for plants, so they develop on their typical timeframe (not taking greenhouse gas concentration and temperature changes into account). On the other hand, the plant pollinators like bees rely on temperature changes to represent a seasonal change to signal when they should pollinate plants. Because temperatures prematurely rise in the progress of a year due to anthropogenic climate change, bees are prematurely signalled to start pollination for plants when the plants are not ready to be pollinated. This is called a phenological mismatch. When bees are ready to pollinate before plants are in their pollination season, bee populations are devastated on a large scale because they do not have access to nectar and pollen that they need to survive. The phenological mismatch also reduces the reproductive success of the plants to which the bees are co-adapted (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/…/…/j.1461-0248.2008.01269.x). Phenological mismatches caused by climate change are not exclusive to plant-bee interactions; this is just one of many examples.

Here's what you can do to fight climate change, as is: - make it known to you local legislator that climate change is an important issue to you (a link to find your local legislator: https://gov.oregonlive.com/legislators/) - donate to climate scientists, political action groups, or whatever group you like and feel like represent you best ( I prefer Natural Resources Defense Council, Environmental Defense Fund, Union of Concerned Scientists, etc.) - be a smart consumer (http://cejsh.icm.edu.pl/…/15_B.Reformat_The_idea_of_smart_s… or https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10603-012-9188-7) - talk about this issue with others (helpful ways to discuss this issue with others: https://www.theatlantic.com/…/how-to-talk-about-cli…/375067/) - read more and gain a better understanding of the issue to form your own opinion (here's more information on critical thinking to sort through which literature is good literature: https://www.criticalthinking.org/files/Concepts_Tools.pdf) - other tips for fighting the good fight: https://davidsuzuki.org/…/top-10-ways-can-stop-climate-ch…/… https://www.weforum.org/…/how-to-talk-about-climate-change…/ https://www.nrdc.org/…/how-you-can-help-fight-climate-change

TL;DR: Climate change is anthropogenic. If companies do not invest in environmentally-safe practices in the status quo (because we as consumers and constituents do not let them know it is an important issue), taxes will have to cover the costs (with interest) in the future. However, some costs can never be paid back-- like, if entire bee species go extinct.

TV series I've watched in March 2022

image

The End of the F***ing World - Season 1 & 2 (2017-19)

- Check my previous review of season 1 here

- The season 2 will always be memorable to me because I've binge watched it with my cousin. We talked about it the whole day. I know, whenever I'll watch it again, I'll miss those moments.

- Season 2 also had some serious issues dealt with just like season 1. Bonnie's character hit close to home. I want to hug her. I also want to hug Alyssa and James. They've been through a lot.

image

Sweet Tooth (2021)

- A world slipped into chaos as a contagious virus breaks through and babies are born as part animals.

- This is the perfect time to watch this show with your family. It is quite emotional.

image

Our Planet (2019)

- From the grassland to the forest, from the ice covered world to the hot desert, from the fresh water to the high sea, this series shows varieties of habitats of the living beings of our beloved earth.

- This nature documentary is quite different than any other I've ever seen. It discusses the climate change in a way to make people actually worry about the situation. I highly recommend it to all of my followers.

- You may feel like to cry if you're an animal lover.

image

Strangers From Hell (2018)

- A small town boy moves to a residence of the city where he encounters many creepy strangers.

- I've never imagined this series would be that much deep. It is very detailed and the work is a piece of art. One of the best kdramas out there.

- It's very gruesome and violent. Definitely not going to recommend it to the faint hearted people.

- To be honest it gave me nightmares. I couldn't sleep properly at night for a whole week and only slept at daytime. My mind was totally wrecked.

image

The Tale of the Nine Tailed (2020)

- A nine tailed fox leaves his position as a forest deity to search for his reincarnated love.

- Though it is a fantasy and romance series, I mostly enjoyed the interaction between the gumiho brothers. And to be honest, I love Lee Rang <3

- Another best part of the series is the mentions of all the different sorts of mythical creatures. I love to know about mythologies of different countries.

image

Persona (2019)

- An anthology of short films with metaphorical meanings.

- Apart from the fact that each episode was directed by different directors with the same lead actress I don't want to say much about it. Watch it to find out. It's great BTW.

The Ice Caps Are Melting, and it's Sarah McLachlan's Fault

Polar bears have been getting a lot of press lately due to climate change and the odd female celebrity telling us about their diminishing environment with heart-wrenching PSAs.  But despite their efforts, Lilith Fair creator and sensitive female singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan has the trump card with her ASPCA ads.

I would have a million dollars if someone paid me a million dollars to count the status updates and tweets I’ve seen where friends, or that awkward girl from high school trigonometry, bemoan the montage of sad puppy eyes, gaunt ponies, and kittens behind bars.

Example: “OMG! Those Sarah McLachlan animal cruelty commercials are SO SAD!!!!!!!”

I hate seeing those statuses all the time because, DOI they are supposed to be sad.  That is the point of ethos as a tool.  They want you to be sad about the puppies and kitties missing ears and limbs so that you give money. Money that will help the pets, but also fund commercials during prime-time television (I’m on to you, ASPCA).

So I’m frustrated because, yeah, we get it, but also because that girl from high school trigonometry was awkward and, frankly, so was I.  And then not only am I going, “Oh, wow, seven exclamation points and all caps. Get this girl a Pulitzer,” I am triggered back into the days when I wore crocs to school and buckled my belts to the side.  If I passed the hottest guy in school, who I casually called “the walking Greek god”, I would update every scintillating moment in my LiveJournal later that day. And, I thought I was so cool.

At this point down the rabbit hole, I’m legitimately depressed about three legged dogs (who doesn’t have April and Andy there to love him and remove him from awkward situations), as well as how much easier I could have made my life in high school if I wasn’t so convinced I was awesome…and then there’s the song.

Look, that song is beautiful.  It has been an important song for a lot of people over the years, but here’s the thing: it’s about suicide.  Take a good listen again to lyrics, e.g.: “There’s always some reason to feel not good enough/ And it’s hard at the end of the day” and you will quite quickly put it together.  It’s not even secretly about it like how almost every classic rock song from the late 60s is about drugs/tripping/bad trips on good drugs/etc.

Screw those commercials. To the tune of “Angel” everyone can emote and type words about sad dogs, but when a polar bear is clutching a bit of ice and floating away into the Arctic Ocean, nobody speaks up.  It’s Sarah McLachlan’s fault.  The only way she can correct this is by writing a song equally tear jerking.  She can do it. She started Lilith Fair TWICE. She can save the effing polar bears.

ENG || This past June 8 was the #worldoceansday and it has been all about reducing plastic consumption, a necessary gesture that should be taken to our day to day. One week a year is not enough for the health of the planet earth and above all to save marine life. Every year up to 12 million tons of garbage reach the oceans and seas. Plastics represent between 60% and 80% of marine waste. All these plastics seriously damage the health of aquatic ecosystems and the survival of the species that inhabit them. The microplastics are fragments of plastic smaller than 5mm that can be generated from the breakage of large pieces of plastics or manufactured directly like this, as in the case of microspheres present in hygiene and cleaning products (exfoliants, toothpaste, etc.). this type of plastics are particularly harmful since when ingested by marine animals it causes gastrointestinal blockages and alternations in their reproduction and feeding patterns. In addition there are studies that show that these microplastics are being transferred along the food chain. Between 21% and 54% of these particles in the world are found in the Mediterranean Sea. Furthermore macroplastics (fragments larger than 25mm) such as plastic bags, fishing nets, bottles, etc. also impact marine life including marine mammals, seabirds and sessile fauna (corals), as they cause entanglement, suffocation, strangulation and malnutrition. It’s noteworthy that, approximately, 17% of the species that ingest or become entangled with marine waste appear on the red list of endangered species of the international union for the conservation of nature. CLIMATE CHANGE IS REAL (2019)

CLIMATE CHANGE IS REAL (2019)

ENG ||Hi!! Since I was little I have been in love with nature and for this reason the fight against climate change is a very important issue for me. "Climate change is real" is a project to create awareness about the deplorable situation we are generating in the Arctic. The increased greenhouse effect due to our gas emissions generates catastrophic repercussions like the increase in the global temperature of the Earth and oceans, the retreating of glaciers almost everywhere around the world, including the Alps, Alaska, the Himalayas, etc., the decrease of spring snow throughout the northern hemisphere, the rise of the sea level and the declining of Arctic sea ice, which is formed each time later in the fall and melts sooner in the spring. Only in the last 30 years three quarters of the Arctic sea ice has been lost. The population of polar bears is estimated to be between 22,000 and 31,000 specimens worldwide, which describes it as a vulnerable species. This decline of the population is mainly due to its heavily dependence on the sea ice environment for traveling, mating, resting and above all to feed itself, since its diet is made up mainly of other sea ice-dependent animals, such as seals. Only polar bears that have continuous access to sea ice have the option of hunting all year. Those who live in areas where ice is completely dissolved in summer are forced to spend several months on small ground surfaces where the difficulty of getting food brings them to a critical situation. This illustration is made in mixed technique, since the bears are made one by one in watercolor and ink, the iceberg is a digitally modified pencil drawing and the backgrounds are a gouache base. Finally for the color touches of the iceberg I used colored pencils.

CAT || Hola !!

Climate Change Signal Emerges from the Weather
Scientists begin to detect the influence of global warming on extreme weather

From Hawaii’s flurry of hurricanes, to record high sea ice in Antarctica, and a heat wave that cooked the Australian Open like shrimp on a barbie, 2014 saw some wild weather. How much of that was tied to climate change is what scientists around the world tried to answer in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society’s annual attribution report, which was published Thursday.

What they discovered was that the clearest impacts of warming could be found in heat-related events, from heat waves on land to unusually hot ocean waters. Other events, like droughts in East Africa and the Middle East, California’s intense wildfires, and winter storms that continually swept across the eastern U.S., were harder to pinpoint. In part this is because such events are inherently complex, with a multitude of factors influencing them.

For example, while the East African drought was found to be both more likely and more intense because of warming, the situation in the Middle East was less clear, with no discernable climate change connection to the various factors that influenced it. Likewise, no direct push from climate change could be found in California’s wildfire activity, though it is clear that it is increasing the overall wildfire risk there.

And while some events, like the U.S. winter storms and the record high Antarctic sea ice extent, could be pinned to a particular cause, that cause could not be linked to climate change. For other events, like the drought in Brazil and flooding in the Canadian prairies, humans influenced the likelihood in other ways besides the greenhouse gases that continue to be emitted into the atmosphere.

What was clear, though, is that the fast-growing field of what is called extreme event attribution is gaining momentum. Researchers are casting a wider net for extreme events to examine and continually refining their methods. Attribution work has traveled a considerable distance since its inception just over a decade ago.

“Extreme event attribution” is a new topic for me. Very cool science right thar.
