Were there ever any Western depictions of the himantopodes? They became popular in the Middle East but I've never seen any European art of them...
i've never heard of them before and i don't remember seeing anything like that, but i'll keep an eye out for them. i'm not an expert though. maybe some professional art historians/medievalists etc know more?
for context (from the wikipedia article on iranian folklore): "Himantopodes (davālpā): an evil creature that uses its flexible, leather-like legs as tentacles to grip and capture human beings. The captives will be enslaved and forced to carry the creature until they die of fatigue."
Here's a more in-depth lexicon entry

I feel like werewolves are lacking something that other traditional monsters have. I can't figure out what it is. Vampires, ghosts, witches, they all have a little *something* that I don't get from werewolves. Maybe I just haven't read a really good werewolf story? The best one I know is "Werewolves of London" by Warren Zevon, and that only barely counts. I'm down to hear any theories, really, because this has been bothering me lately.
The swamps are home to many
Woah would you look at that they found something in the woods
Another folk costume! I've been sourcing all the reference from the nat geo article about the wild men of Europe I really recommend it
The strawman is a friendly fellow
I created my own story on AO3 if anyone is interested. It’s a fantasy murder mystery at a boarding school for all folklore creatures. It follows the main character Serena, a half werewolf half siren as she starts a new year at the Veil after a traumatic experience last year. Already dreading school the year get a whole lot worse when a killer shows up, targeting half breeds like her.

🎃
HAPPY FREAKING HALLOWEEN TO US?!
What parallel universe did we step into
🎃 Imagine this. You are walking through your yard. It's one of your favorite places, all sprawling garden rows and vibrant green grass. There are herbs for cooking and spell casting. There are daisies - so many daisies - in every shade of your rainbow. Up ahead you spot a small cropping of weeds, and set your foot on each stepping stone of the path that leads right to them. The house is a little farther now, but you are still within the confines of your tall and impenetrable fence. Nothing comes through that fence. Not now and not ever. Within it you are safe. Your lover and your fresh baked buns are safe. (The buns, of course, are in the oven turning golden as you speak. It's an old family recipe, jotted lovingly on a recipe card.) You reach the weeds and pluck a dandelion. Caught up in a moment of buoyant childlike whimsy, you make a wish and blow, blow, blow. Hundreds of featherly florets scatter. You laugh. You watch as they ride the breeze, one floret in particular. It drifts and dances like all the others, but as the wind changes direction it swoops over the fence. You lose sight of it, and send a silent apology to whoever ends up with a cropping of dandelions in their yard. Did you know that dandelions don't need to be purposefully planted all at once? All it takes is for one small seed to catch on the breeze, and by then it has spread irreversibly. You'd never know where the initial seed came from, because it has started so small and floated so far. You swallow, staring at the fence. It was you who blew the dandelion in the first place. It was you who ventured too closely to the edge of the garden. It was chance and weather that landed it where it did. You breathe in, and deep and out, expelling the growing anxiety from your body. You turn back to the house. You have those homemade buns to tend to, after all. But as you reach the door you can't help but cast a furtive glance over your shoulder, to the spot where that dandelion floret disappeared. You can never blame someone for the dandelions that sprout in your grass. It’s untraceable and irrelevant. They all come from the same place anyway: a private moment performed too near the property line. Of course the recipient would pluck the weeds so unwittingly planted. Of course they, too, would blow, blow, blow and spread the florets far and wide. Once you blow a dandelion, you never get it back. It isn’t yours anymore. 🎃
…but guess at what time taylor woke up to record the vocals for folklore?
—————
ehm, no not really?! 8.30 sounds reasonable 🤷♀️
it’s not like driving around at midnight without your headlights on
making your midnights your afternoons
or still being awake at 3 am?
you could be standing in the mirror at 4 am
talking to yourself
so yeah all things considered..
8.30 - a perfect time to wake up if you ask me
now and forevermore ☀️
folklore is like, , when you're gay and harbouring a lot of trauma from being gay in high school and the people who hurt you and the people you hurt and you haven't properly processed any of these events any of this heartbreak so everything comes back to the girl you loved when you were seven who you wanted to protect and go on adventures with and it comes back to the girl you loved when you were seventeen and you knew everything but you didn't know anything and you hurt her more than you could ever admit but she hurt you more than you admit to yourself and it's all so painful and you carry it with you your whole life
I saw someone else doing this so i thought i would join in

What issues would a Jewish Werewolf face? I mean with a lunar calendar and so many of the holidays near the full moon, they would have to get pretty inventive, just think about sleeping in the succah, or since Yom Kippor is about 4 days from the full moon, it should make things interesting as in most stories weres start to lose control near the full moon.
HMMM! (and thank you for sending me these anons!)
I suspect it depends on what tradition we’re drawing from. Werewolves as a whole are mostly a European thing, although people changing into or communing with animals is pretty much a worldwide myth.
Some things to think about: If you’re not fully conscious (or not conscious in the same way) when you’re a wolf, are you accountable for any destruction you cause? Does transformation count as work? (Also, if you can’t stop yourself from doing work, you probably aren’t breaking Shabbat..) Can you attend synagogue as a wolf?
And we do have recorded cases of nice werewolves! In Latvia in 1692, an eighty-year-old man named Thiess confessed to being a werewolf who, with other werewolves, regularly went to Hell three times a year to fight Satan to ensure a good harvest. This would be a great tradition for Sukkot, Shavuot, and Tu B’Shevat, and I propose we all adopt the custom immediately!
Once again tormented by visions of selkies...
I try to have projects to work on as a warm-up for comic stuff. Here we can see some of my favorite subjects to draw: Women, and rocks.
"Have you ever wondered why people from all across the world have stories and paintings about dragons, all from the same time period. From Asia to Europe to Africa. These big lizards, some with fire breath, some with wings. It’s probably because they are real. There is no other explanation. But where are they, you might ask. Everywhere. And this is what would happen if they came back."
